I prefer to chop my shit but I have zero problem with looping. Some of the best beats are just loops. I think the problem with looping splice or looping from sample packs is they didn’t really “dig” for it as such. I personally do not care though, dope is dope
Looping from packs or splice is different though, philosophically. It’s not really sampling. It’s not recontextualising existing recorded music. It’s just using a tool for what it’s made to do.
It all depends on the project. Sometimes the sample is perfect just the way it is. Other times it has the perfect texture, but maybe the melody isn’t what you want or there’s an instrument that you don’t wanna use. Knowing how to chop around unwanted parts of a sample, or to take certain parts and re-arrange them into a better melody is a REALLY helpful skill that makes crate-digging much easier. I personally use an equal amount of both. I don’t overcomplicate a project if it’s already what I want, but I also encourage anyone who makes beats to learn how to get more out of your samples.
Madlib finds his own loops in records which is an art in its self. Splice loops are ready made 4 to 8 bar loops. I feel these definitely need to be chopped and made into your own.
I prefer chopping, feels more creative and unique when creating your own sequences. I notice I'm more likely to loop when I listen to a sample 1st and more likely to chop when I go in blind
I started out looping, mainly because my old SP505 was kinda jacked and chopping was very tedious. Found some gold. But after getting the 404mk2, man, being able to chop has really upped my game and level of creativity. Whatever serves the song really, but chopping produces some magic moments.
2005. I first learned how to chop samples by using my SP-404 first, then I got a brand new MPC 200XL and man, did I fall in love with that thang. Maybe earlier or whenever it was, I heard about Ableton Live and MTV Music Generator (lol!) and I that was when I got my first Mac computer and began messing around with loops. I was big into DJing here in Hawaii and producing music was just a side hustle, a hobby. Since then I've delved both into using loops and sampling trying to find my way of balancing between both of them. Loops help me create the base of my beats, the foundations of my creative process and if it turns out that using loops gets me there, then so be it. But I also like to find good samples and chop them up too. However we create is however we do it as long as we're loving it and being blessed in the process. I use Ableton to chop my samples mostly, I've not really taken a liking to Serato Sample yet. My love for music is a true blessing from God. 🙏🏿Another great video brother, J Filt, Happy New Year!
I prefer chopping for the discovery and repurposing aspect. I have nothing against loops though because sometimes they just work. He mentioned Madlib but the Alchemist is another person who has done some great things with loops.
Chopping is the way ! I used to sit and dig for obvious loops but when you discover the power of chopping you can re sequence basically anything especially when used in conjunction with stem splitting/eq and pitch/key shifting and make something entirely new and really make it your own to the point the original artist probably couldnt tell youve ripped elements of their music
I couldn't give a flying zebra, but I enjoyed your video nonetheless. I've done the chopped verse / hook loop on many a beat. You incorporated way more movement and vibe in the chopped part than you could ever get out of the loop. Nice one Hosie
When I started making beat I would find a loop and just make a beat around it but now find better way to be creative with it chop it changing the pitch making the sample your own. Salute to bro
From my perspective, there's a natural order to creating samples. First, I look for parts of a song that already work perfectly as a loop-the Madlib approach. The problem is that the supply is much smaller than the demand. Songs that are good for sampling don’t stay unused for long. Second, I focus on songs with interesting-sounding sections and piece together a sample by chopping. And if that still doesn’t work, I move on to a modular approach, trying to combine elements from various songs.
As I’m getting better at sampling, as of right now I prefer loop digging. With that being said I pitch it , throw it in reverse or use plugins to make it mine
I chop ...time stretch.... stem.... pitch shift... all that. I use whole samples to single shots to stems... I use whatever sounds good to me. I can chop a sample til it's unrecognizable. What ever the beat needs to get done.
chopping samples is too fun. Looping is an art in and skill itself but grabbing it from a source like splice, that is curated to have a certain level of quality, doesn’t sit right with me.
I prefer chopping. Never messed with loop packs much for real. The couple times I did use loop packs was when I was just getting started and wanted to get my feet wet but I still chopped that shit. I have a problem with people grabbing ready-made loops for whatever genre they’re working on and just stacking them up and calling themselves a producer, trying to take full credit for basically just un-stem-splitting somebody else’s beat. Digging in crates and taking something that wasn’t originally made specifically for hip hop and slicing it into pieces and making something new out of it is a whole other skill. I agree that to the listener, the end result is all tht matters but my issue lies specifically with people claiming to be godlike producers because they know how to stack ready made unmodified loops somebody else made on top of each other in garage band.
I enjoy chopping samples. You're putting your own spin on it. However, if I don't feel like chopping a sample, I'll sample a loop. It depends on how I feel. Don't limit yourself.
some times... the loop is it... whatever you create when you are being an artist.. ain't no rules... but that's for artists not those who would look for a cash grab
There’s no rules in this shit - everything goes - if the loop is fire get the loop going - if it needs to be cut up then cut the shit - i think u need to be both - my formula right now is maybe take a loop and just add a bunch of my own keys on top but sometimes i chop sometimes i don’t do much it’s whatever gets the job done at the end of the day - cuz at the end of the day a dope beat is a dope beat if an mc kills it then u did your job no matter how u got to the end product
If someone can't at least chop a sample, I don't wanna hear the beat. I'm not looking for some soundcloud producer's version of **someone else's song** + drums and bass. That's a remix. That's the equivalent of jamming with the original creator. That's a collab. That's lazy as hell. It's the diet version of just layering samples from a construction kit and hitting export.
I think not looping just doesnt show as much talent, as chopping, twisting, and flipping do. Both can sound dope, But u aint getting as many aura points for just putting drums ontop. But Ive hard planty good songs without chopping🤟🏼
I do enjoy a fine craftsmanship. Quality. Attention to detail. People who chop, can do things non choppers could only dream of and would need yeeeeaaarssss of practice. Maybe never Get There.
@@Verysickbeats I meant to say I think looping doesn’t show as much talent 😂😂😂 It’s 2025 everybody can hear when a loop is fire. Back in 2006 it was wow to choose the right loop. LOOL
Everybody can find a good sounding loops and put drums and bass under it… nothing special about it. Its more skill when its choped but you think its a loop :D i will never do this. Only if the loop i using isn’t adding much to the whole track
loops is better cause its less work & i can easily have 20-30 beats per day. its just rap beats. originality isnt important anymore. chopping samples is just gonna mess up things anyway. sike!!!!

Facts I agree.
you can use both techniques as an a/b for a beat fosure, specific samples have their own niche use of either technique which makes each beat unique
I prefer chopping, feels more creative and unique when creating your own sequences. I notice I'm more likely to loop when I listen to a sample 1st and more likely to chop when I go in blind

I like doing both. But sometimes samples keep a vibe, and processing them can be creative. But chopping samples can give a stronger syncopated feel ✊🏾
Very true!
Depends. If it’s a beat tape you have to bring your A game but if it’s for a Rap project loops are fine because it’s mostly about the Bars.
nice point
chop n drums

I like both but chopping is more fun.

The coolest kid on the block for samplers Are RIPX, they should make a sampler. Infact im a shoot them a tweet.

I love chopping samples and making it my own but its pretty hard so i loop things
the more you do it the easier it gets
I do both depending on on the sample . If the sample is super obscure sure I’ll loop it
