Drove through there with my SUV, can't imagine driving it with a semi. I about squeezed the leather off my steering wheel. You are a true professional, thanks for the ride,. Safe travels.
2007 FSJ with no drive line transfer case to a dump on Engineer's pass, group got us to the top of Red mountain then cut us loose, friend was driving and I was yelling at him to use the brakes as we went into the first corner. We had so much momentum that we coasted halfway through Ouray before they had to bump us again which got us almost to the turn off for the KOA then he had to push us on into our space
My favorite mountain pass. Drivin' it many a time and in the snow. Always fun to take someone who has never been over it from Silverton way to Montrose! The lack of guard rail freaks them out!!
I surely enjoy your videos of the mountain roads. We have RV’d since 2004 and been on many of the roads you have videoed. Now we have a 44’ Blue Bird that weighs 59k with our car in tow. It never ceases to amaze me how cars will stack up behind when they clearly have a passing zone with a very long line of sight. We have watched all of your highway 550 videos in preparation for retirement. Thanks!!
Your enthusiasm for your job and attention to detail is what makes you the best. Other U tube truckers gripe and complain but you just keep the shoe on the peddle. Case in point: That RV with the trailer rounding the blind curve. You made that look easy, cause you were ready.(shoe off peddle)
You’re my kind of truck driver. I don’t drive truck but I know it’s a tuff job when drivers are jerks on the road. I always give the truck driver the space he needs on the road. I know I’m safe on the roads with drivers like you out there.
Thanks for the ride-along Mike. This is one of my favorite places on the planet. I spent a lot of time there in the "80s and "90s. I need to get back before I kick the bucket.
Love your videos. Bring back memories of fun road trips. And I really appreciate that you pull over when you can. I will too. Let the motorcycles have their fun lol. Too many RV-ers will slowly pass turnout after turnout without pulling over, sigh. Just know that some of us understand you're doing the best you can.
Awesome Mike! Even though I was riding shotgun... LOL... that motor home driver about make me suck up the seat cushion in my buttocks when you rounded that one curve... LOL... it sure showed me that motor driver didn't have the experience in driving that big one and pulling that suv behind. Thanks for the ride along and looking forward to other parts between Silverton and Durango pass. Catch you later and be safe!
Les D ...yeah! Old folks have an awareness short fall that's some form of Attention Deficit Disorder! Maybe they see things that overwhelms their attention!
One of my big grips, large motor homes pulling a personal vehicle behind with no special license or training. They often pull some of the stupidest and most dangerous mistakes. They really need to change the law and require a driving and written test to get a license.
@@saltydog3714 In many states and provinces you DO have to get a heavy vehicle license if over 11000 kg. He was too far over as he got scared about the edge. It is is not about the ability to drive other than he should NOT have taken the RV on such a road. Park it and drive the car. I have had FAR more trouble with over aggressive jerks driving pickup trucks especially in bad weather. One actually did a donut right in front of me on a snowy highway. He got hung up on a guard rail. Justice.
I just hitched a ride with you thru the Red Mountain, Ouray region and I think I held my breath most of the trip. Outstanding driver ! Living in the NW Fla woods, your channel is just what I needed, to get out and away and not have to get someone to feed the animals. Thank you!
u showed them. . king of the road. . (dont let that go to ur head). . love those twisty roads on the motor bike at speed. . an there`s u pulling a trailer too. u had to work for a living (smiles) . sweet. . nice to ride shot gun on these roads, an the view is awsum
This road has a definite "pucker-factor." But the fantastic mountains are beautiful memories for me; many vacations spent in the San Juan's (driving a passenger vehicle. Overnight in "Yoo-ray," and next day start heading South, and then Up! The "Million Dollar" highway was so-named because it was a trail that was used to haul rich minerals and gold in the 1800s from mining camps. It's not a "fast road," but not steep, and enjoyable with careful driving (And watching out for other "drivers" who don't pay attention.) Driving a rig large rig here requires attention! There have been a few fatal car wrecks, but Colorado takes good care of this road. Instead of accidents, a seasonal problem is snow slides. Driving 550 early Spring I observed remnants of snow slides the state had opened; but everything went well. Another experience on 550 is further south is seeing old mining towns and buildings, and the drop down into the old town of Silverton. This video is a "keeper" for me when I want to experience 550 again. Thanks for the video, and for letting vehicles go by you! I love seeing opposing traffic pulling to the right to give you clearance. Be safe!
Awesome drive Mike! This is one of my favorite routes that you’ve filmed. We did it on the Harley one time. What a thrill & great memories. I agree with your comments regarding Rocky Mtn Nat’l Park. Lot’s of flat-lander lookie loos for sure. 😅 Just have to take that into consideration, relax, enjoy the experience, and then hang it all & go fishing! 😂
We always pulled over on that pass for folks that were in such a hurry. Most beautiful landscape anywhere and they drive through it like they can't wait to get out of there. Anyway......usually saw mostly City Market semi's up there and boy could they move!
Mike. You are the Professional Driver. Everyone else you see, or who follows you is an amateur, and wouldn't understand how difficult driving with amateurs really is. Ignorance is Bliss. Even if they wave at you. They THINK They Own the road, and Semi's are just always in the way. PEACE!
Thank you for the ride. I love the million dollar highway and have been back and forth probably over a dozen times but in a small car. I can't imagine driving a semi-you are very talented. I probably won't be able to make it back there so I really enjoyed taking the trip with you-br ought back a lot of wonderful memories.
That was a really breathtaking ride you gave us there Mike , thanks for doing it and showing us spectacular scenery which makes a difference from just normal paved roads.
Went out of Ouray to Sillverton in 1980 cabover pete 350 cummins no jake brake 10 speed delivered lumber out of Universal Transport Rapid City S Dakota to Smith Metals quite a trip . So thanks for to trip back in time. Stay safe Ed Smith.
Enjoyed a good Buffalo burger in Silverton Co. Rode the train up from Durango Then backpacked in to the mountains at about the halfway point back to Durango Set up camp for five days just above the RR tracks What a treat We also drove from Durango north in our GMC motorhome twice
Loved Great Dane RV's comments. I drove this ten years ago from Craig, CO to Gallup, NM. I am afraid of heights and the lack of guard rails really did freak me out going south to the top of the pass. Going down to Silverton was OK. I enjoyed this much more riding with you. I will never drive it again.
........but sometimes there's truck drivers on their days off behind the wheel of a 4 wheeler that understand and ALWAYS show courtesy to our fellow truck drivers or anybody on the road
Have you driven Red Mtn Pass in both directions. This is a route that could be a favorite. I think it is a good choice out west. You have great commentary with your videos.
I know that route quite well but it was fun letting someone else do the driving. You did a great job and I admire your patience with certain elements of traffic. I just watched another video where they claimed that Ouray to Silverton was the absolute worst road in the country if not the whole world. Go figure.
Thanks Mike, great ride. Didn’t see many semis on this trip? Next Durango, Aztec, Bloomfield & Albuquerque? Looking forward to seeing them. We plan on going to Farmington 8,30 for Labor Day so I guess we’ll be on 550 from Albuquerque to Bloomfield then over to Farmington. You’ll be who knows where maybe someday we’ll pass. Until then be safe. Ed
Me and the wife have traveled that black top road 20 times, my wife is on her 3rd jeep 20 years now. We have completed all of the 4 wheel drive only passes in that whole area. Always enjoyed, One of your BEST videos yet Mike!! And you'l probably get more subs because I shared with all of my friends..Great job buddy!
That was just awesome! There were a lot of avalanches this past winter & spring & lots of road repairs done with lots of closures, so I was interested in seeing how the road looked. Scary as ever! I had also heard there was some flooding due to all the record snow melt. Great driving! (p.s. it's YOU-ray)
hwy is like, bear tooth, glacier park, chinook pass, Bluete pass, Diablo pass all rolled into on scenic adventure. know where my next Harley ride will be😎😋
As you climb the hill just past Silverton, you can't see it but there is a car that went over the side several years ago and is still there. You can see it if you are on the train from Durango to Silverton. I am a flat lander from the Dallas area. The first time I drove over Red Mountain Pass my rear almost bit a hole in the seat.
OKS !!! Thanks for sharing as seen many videos on the train rides,,but never in an 18 wheeler !!! Have a good rest for now & looking to the rest of the trip !! & AS Always '''KEEP IT SAFE ''!!
ENJOYED every minute of this video and time 4 or 5 times just saying........thank you thank you thank you thank you.......... I see something different every time....
This is just amazing Scenery and you are an amazing Driver! I watch several of your videos but this is tops for me. This reminds me of driving through Ft. Davis and alpine. Thanks for the Videos!
Mike Its Helen...I do the same thing, I always say, YOU ARE WELCOME! GLAD A SENIOR CITIZEN COULD HOLD THE DOOR FOR YOU...LOL Some show their ignorance and others are embarassed that a senior citizen held the door for them.
Cool your in my neck of the woods in this trip. We see trucks up there all the time, I wave because I know how hard your working on that drive. It scares even the locals but hands down my favorite time to make the run down to Durango is mid winter when there is 15 ft of snow on the hills and 6” on the road.
"Gotta share the road" as you drive over the line multiple times. As a resident of Colorado it just become so annoying during the summer tourist season to have semis and large motorhomes pulling cars clog up the mountain passes. I am glad you pull over when you can to be respectful, but so many do not. Especially the Texans. :) The number of terrible accidents have increased so much over the past few years in Colorado because disrepectful drivers cause other drivers to do dangerous maneuvers to pass and get around them. Can get real scary out there some times.
Wow the best Shotgun ride ive been on so far as the scenery is crazy good and i thought the mt's in my home state of KY were nice and they are but nothing like that but have to say when the leaves are turning colors the mt's in KY are hard to beat
Love your videos. Always let the truckers past, they are working. Me, I'm just cruising and if they let me pass they get a friendly double tap on the horn....thankyou. I'm hoping this summer to do a run doing the US550 from Albuquerque, NM to Grand Mesa, Grand Junction, CO by motorcycle, I also have a friend who lives in Mesa, who has invited me to visit their ranch, looking forward to it.
Leaving a restaurant with some friends I held the door open for the people coming out behind us.. The parade of people just kept getting longer and as you said, they walked through as if I owed it to them, as if I was the doorman.. Eventually I had to drop the door in someones face because my friends were getting in the car to leave..
Love 550 in the semi, every 2 weeks for 4 yrs ran Durango to Ouray with 26k in a 53' box. Great fun scaring the beejezus out of the 4 wheelers and RV's. Even more fun in a white out with 4 3-railers and two drags on the trailer.
Nice ride over the mountain. Thanks. Just a thought on the situation when you pulled over to let the “clowns” pass at the top of the mountain and no-one acknowledged. If I was one of them I would have assumed that you were just pulling over to rest, or check the load, etc. In future, in a similar situation, I will now wonder if the driver is being considerate. What would be the correct way to acknowledge?
I gather this is the second Red Mountain Pass video ... I noted in that, that this highway is like the Alpine Way in NSW, Australia, I'll add here, only with out the mines!
Drove through there with my SUV, can't imagine driving it with a semi. I about squeezed the leather off my steering wheel. You are a true professional, thanks for the ride,. Safe travels.

Absolutely beautiful entire ride! 👍 Although I did hit the brakes a few times for you and was steering my tablet. 😂
Found myself twisting my chair to make the curves

Yes I think we all shook our pant leg after the rv/pulling suv encounter. Mike pulled it off without one bead of sweat. He's good!
Just BEAUTIFUL.
Homesick.:
Motorcycle,tent,backpack.

Been on that road 3 times in my life, the camera doesn't do justice for the colors. A very lovely drive, thank you for taking us along.
Highly recommend this drive at the height of the Autumn colors. Just make sure to pull over and stop before gawking.
Red Mountain Great Scenic Pass Thanks for the Ride Mike
It's been over thirty years since I've been over that pass. The highway certainly didn't look that nice or wide back then. Thanks again for the ride!
Excellent-you are a true trucker brother-Outstanding as always!
So beautiful the scenery almost doesn't even look real wow Thank-you for filming❤
You nailed Mike that was a great ride. Now I want to take a trip on 550 south. Thanks for a fantastic ride. Boy what scenery👍👍👍👍

Road Bear Tooth Hiway over Lookout Pass back in 2007 with my son. Trip of a lifetime. This brings back great memories.

Beautiful scenery. Thanks for ride.
That is a beautiful mountain drive. TY MMM
Beautiful highway! Love from Thailand.
My wife and I did it in our RV. It is a beautiful run.
Some friends from work and I have been on this road a few times on our motorcycles. In Silverton, we stop for eats at the Cow Palace Cafe

I brought a load of beer, MillerCoors I think, up to 4 corners on 160 just in time for prom. It was a nice trip.
Bloody beautiful scenery Mike.
So different to us in Australia.
Drive safely mate!!!

Anyway.........PEACE!!
Awesome Day!
Awesome Drive!
Gotta love your job!
For your next trip , take your tractor-trailer over elephant hill in canyonlands national park.
Yeah right. I got busted today for going through the Mojave National preserve.. I didn't see no damn sign.. I was just trying to beat the traffic. but she did not give me a ticket because the sign was ripped down which would explain why I didn't see one.. but alas she just gave me a warning.. said.. don't do it again.. Hard to imagine that people crossed through there in wagons.Just unbelievable. That was some tough birds.
That sure was a beautiful ride thank you.
Beautiful! Just Beautiful!! Thank You.. :)
Quality mike , steering like you having her in your pocket trousers, only posible after millions of miles you can do that.
Thanks for an awesome ride!
Yeah your opening the door and thank you very much
Supernice landscape just Beautiful.
I'm hoping this summer to do a run doing the US550 from Albuquerque, NM to Grand Mesa, Grand Junction, CO by motorcycle, I also have a friend who lives in Mesa, who has invited me to visit their ranch, looking forward to it.
Try watching this one at 2 times the speed, lol!
Lol.. bet that is hairy..
That's so beautiful. Thank you.
Leaving a restaurant with some friends I held the door open for the people coming out behind us.. The parade of people just kept getting longer and as you said, they walked through as if I owed it to them, as if I was the doorman.. I would love to ride the Durango/Silverton steam train.
Fantastic video, reminds me of Yosemite...thanks!
Love the scenery
Lovely drive, Enjoyed it completely.
Do that trip at night with rain and snow mix coming in a big rig, been there done that, thank God has not a lot of traffic at night.
..you said it Rusty..
Once again, thanks Mike!
Nice work Mike🤠👍
What a beautiful drive ....
I do the same, “you’re welcome”! They are self absorbed and clueless. Always disappoints me!
WOW, Amazing landscapes!!!
What a beautiful ride
Love 550 in the semi, every 2 weeks for 4 yrs ran Durango to Ouray with 26k in a 53' box. Great fun scaring the beejezus out of the 4 wheelers and RV's. Even more fun in a white out with 4 3-railers and two drags on the trailer.
The scenery here is 100% better than Trail Ridge Road. or any other mtn pass in Colo. i have been over all of them....Summer and Winter.
Thank you. Beautiful.
I think that motor home driver was scared poo-less!
Lol..
Nice ride over the mountain. Thanks. Just a thought on the situation when you pulled over to let the “clowns” pass at the top of the mountain and no-one acknowledged.
