  • Just to add to his lengthy list of accomplishments, Jack Nicklaus became the first player in the modern era to win two Opens at St Andrews, and the fourth in all after Bob Martin, JH Taylor and James Braid.
    His third Open title, and 15th major, came a year after his “Duel in the Sun” with Tom Watson at Turnberry and it was the defending Champion Golfer who led, alongside Peter Oosterhuis, with a round to play.
    Following a switch in the wind, so that it was against going out and behind coming home for the final round, Watson surprisingly slipped out of contention with a 76 and Oosterhuis had a 73.
    Instead, The Open seemed to be between Nicklaus and Simon Owen, both of whom had started one behind.

    Very hard to hear Connery talking thru background noise, but this is still more fun to watch to me than today's players. No gimmicky clubs, just pure talent.

    Yikes, you know you've screwed up the audio mixing when UA-cam can't even auto-generate subtitles for you. ^^'
    Still a pleasure to see all of these. Jack Nicklaus is not a guy who likes to get outgunned two years in a row, that's for sure.
    (Also I love his outfit on Day 4. Doesn't it just scream "I PLAY GOLF FOR A LIVING"? :P )

    In my mind Jack is the greatest links golfer ever. True he only won the Open 3 times. But he has the most second place finishes, the most top 3 finishes, the most top 4 finishes, the most top 5 finishes, the most top 6 finishes, most top 10 finishes, and on to adfinitimum.
    If life was fair Jack would have won at least 5 or 6 claret jugs. But golf is rarely fair. And there was frequently one guy that had a hot streak like Tom Watson in 77 and Johnny Miller in 76 that kept him out of the winner's circle.
    Also please note if Jack was the only top American that traveled the pond, as was the case with Sam Snead in 46 and Ben Hogan in 53 he would have won 7 or more claret jugs, because he finished second to top Americans 4 times.
    And Peter Thompson and Locke were 2 guys that won more claret jugs solely because they did not have to play against the top Americans. As soon as the top Americans came over their winning days were over, with Thompson's 1965 win standing out like a sore thumb. And neither could win in America. Even though Ben Hogan went one for one at the Open. Proving he was better than both those guys.

      Can’t argue, however I will say that Peter Thompson and Tom Watson have to get honorable mentions, and of course, my personal hero, Seve. When he got a chance, he always came through. Suffice it to say, a golfer that wins the Open is just a stud. It’s the best tournament in the world and all of the shots in the bag are required to win!

      @@hanajinks1044 Ben Hogan came over only once to play in the Open and won it in 1953. Do you think if Hogan and Snead and even just the top 10 US golfers played in the Open each year Thomson won it the result would have been the same? Highly unlikely. He may have won it a couple times, but no more.
      The fact he couldn't win any of the 3 American majors while Hogan was 1 for 1 at the Open illustrates this.

    • @jaredvaughan1665
      @jaredvaughan1665 Рік тому

      @@hanajinks1044 I would have respected his 5 major championships more if all the best players were playing on both sides of the Atlantic and his total was say 3 Opens, a Master, and a US Open. Which shows more breadth.
      Just like I would agree with Byron Nelson being an all-time top 10 player had he won the Open. But because he did not win the Open, I barely see him as a top 20 player.
      But at least you could argue Nelson did not play much in the Open because of World War 2 and the low prize money. But Thompson does not have that excuse not being more competitive in an American major.
      Remember both Hogan and Snead were one and done when they won the Open. (Although Snead played a few times very early, and much later in his career. But just imagine if even just Hogan and Snead crossed the Atlantic each year in the 50s. It would have likely been a Walter Hagan, Bobby Jones at the Open in the 1920s duo again.)

    Though in no way did Nicklaus implode at Turnberry, interestingly he only won 4 more majors though still, from memory, I think, managed to win one of each of the four. Watson in contrast won almost all of his after 77. Changing of the guard and / or a bit of a psychological blow for Jack, maybe.

    • @dave55ides
      @dave55ides 6 місяців тому

      No doubt it was a change of the guard - with Watson winning 5 to Nicklaus’ 4. Similarly, in Nicklaus’ peak years (ages 28 to 34), Trevino won as many times (5) as did Jack. It’s one of the reasons I rate Jack higher than Tiger, at every stage of his career he had (in Palmer then Trevino then Watson) a player who could claim to be Nicklaus’ equal. Except for Mickelson, Tiger never had any rival so good.

      I just watched this again. Its really interesting (to me) how the 18th green is cut. The Valley of Sin is very much part of the green. The modern course has the Valley of Sin much more part of the fairway and fringe.

  • @jaredvaughan1665

    Jack played far better at the Open than the US Open, and just as good as at the Masters. But "only" won it 3 times. If life was fair, he'd have won the Open 5 or 6 times.
    At least for Jack only 1 of the 4 majors was not fair. As he finished 2'nd 7 times to his 3 wins. And has the most top 3s and 5s and 10s, etc. Without having the most wins.
    But for Greg Norman 3 of the 4 majors were even more unfair.
    And for Arnald Palmer 2 of the 4 majors were highly unfair, where he finished 2'nd at the U.S Open/PGA Chanpionship a combined 8 times but only won them once at the 1960 US Open.
