To save money we bought a duplex, so it was like buying two houses for the price of one, my daughter lives in one down below, we share the laundry machines, I make dinner one night she does the next, we have the groceries delivered together and spilt the larger packages like carrots, flour, potatoes, onions , cat food etc. When each of us have extra of anything we share, she works and we are retired, I'm sure later on we will need more help and she will be around but have her own space. We have a large garden with a pool so it's nice to sit outside in the summer but we only need one set of tools, lawn mower, furniture etc we even share the Vitamix, air fryer, vacuum.
My frugality this week is. After been given 2 old duvets, I am making Door Dogs (draught excluders) for my girl friends xmas gifts this year. Cost free, as I already had fabric. They all said they are looking forward to receiving and using them. Made with love for great friends.
My hubby has a history of building things in the house, too. Last move he finally got a workshop so it is there now. He loves woodworking and is able to sell his lovely bowls, cutting boards and boxes and gift family.
We recently bought a house with a woodstove. (We also have electric heat.) I will say the entire process has been a huge learning curve: how to buy wood economically, even kindling, building a good fire. Never had the opportunity to do this before but we have taken the last year and learned so much. Now we have a half cord of wood for next year and we have collected a lot of kindling as well. Feels so good to know how to offset our electric heating bill next winter! I can do glad to learn new frugal skills!
My sister in law washes her dishes and then stacks them in the dishwasher to dry! In the US our laundry soap comes in plastic spouted totes. At the end I store them for summer. I then take them out to the garden (one by one) and fill them with water. I can then wash my hands easily before returning to the house!
USA here. I loved liquid detergent but I switched to old-fashioned powder because of the jugs it comes in. I can't buy the powder in local stores so I have to order it from Amazon. I don't waste as much detergent now; it was just so easy to pour too much for the wash.
Cooking and going the the library are my best two ways to save money . I love to read like you do.I was frugal this week by using up some old ingredients.
I do many of the same things. I grew up with a mom who was a marvelous seamstress (made almost all of our clothes) and a dad who was a carpenter. Most of the houses we lived in didn't have separate sewing room or shop so I grew up with clearing the table after our evening meal to make it ready for a project! Our local library branch has a 'free spot' where there are magazines and books. I take out some and bring some back. Thank you Jane and Mike for your ongoing hard work to keep this channel going - such a great community! Glad you are safe and sound!
The gates and fencing looks great. Although I live alone I too buy the larger packs at the supermarket/ butchers and them split them into portion sizes before storing them. This allows me to take advantage of the cheaper prices. I also bulk buy things I use regularly when they are on special offer.
Warmest greetings to Dolly ! I am surprised at how rapidly you have been able to restore the fences and other repairs after the storm. Yes, is there anything more delightful than a crackling fire, cup o tea and an absorbing book on a chilly evening. I like the titles. have a great and restful week. I certainly appreciate your videos.
Love this, the whole video feels so homely! Yes we totally agree with all of this and now buy larger meat packs and freeze into smaller portions so we just visit our freezer more often than the shops. Thank you Jane and Mike 😊 xx
So glad you and your family made it through the storm safely. Things look back to normal. ❤ You now have your gate and Dolly can run around and have fun and be safe from the road.
Try growing the potatoes 🥔 and carrots in tubs. Likewise in 🇦🇺Australia we have real issues with parrots 🦜 and the greedy little things are more protected by law than I am. I'm finding I'm looking forward to the cozy winter for this very reason of more reading time too! We have a couple of Little Free Libraries in our village and there is often a mix of English / French books. Love that its free, you never know what you'll find, we can keep our own shelf neat by donating, and its a way to interact with the community. Thanks for your videos!
This was so helpful. Great ideas. I do break down larger meat packages into individual meal size. I also wash and reuse plastic freezer bags ( except for raw meat, I don't feel that I can take a chance on reusing those)
Wow! New gate and fencing looks great. Good job Mike on do it yourself and put the savings in the cookie jar. I buy on offer, best cost per ounce/use, break it down into reusable freezer bags as disposable is extremely expensive not to mention not good for planet.
It is so interesting that you consider your weather winter-like. Here we just think of it as late fall/autumn. Not all the leaves are off the lower bushes and several trees. We need several days of hard frost to achieve that. Things are still golden with the winds blowing. The sun shines and we could use your rain. Winter is much colder for us.
New gates and drive looking lovely! New multi fuel stove saved for and installed recently. Sourcing cheap, and sometimes free wood to keep us warm through the winter. I read a lot this time of year, and use our local council online library. It’s free to join, and there’s lots of books, and also audiobooks to download for free. Thanks for sharing as always.

I had to smile upon seeing your bottles of diluted cleaners. My grandma did that, too. She used a simple water-with-bleach solution in her tea cups so they never became dingy. I collect the thick parts of cabbage, tops of celery, leek tops, and such in a freezer container; it makes a good mix for making vegetable broth.

some great books there - Philippa Gregory is one of my favourite authors, in the same genre are Sharon Penman, Elizabeth Chadwick - especially The Summer Queen (Eleanor of Aquitaine) & the 2 sequels, & Alison Weir. In our locality there are a few book swap stations outside private homes so we are never short of a good book or 2, many of the supermarkets have a bookcase full of books for a charity donation - I am currently reading Atomic Habits after your recommendation - and your new fencing & gate look fabulous, stay safe both :-)
I use tsp of cheapest laundry detergent in washer as it’s the agitation that cleans the clothes. I make my own fabric Softner from cheapest bottle of hair conditioner & add to empty gallon jug , rinsing the conditioner bottle to fill one half full the gallon jug, add rest white vinegar, shake & that’s it. Can just use white vinegar if u wish as fabric Softner. Hang clothes on rack to dry, or on line where ever. I fluff line dried clothes in dryer few minutes when dry as I just like softer
We are so lucky to have the English books so cheaply here, and there's always literally (no pun intended!) hundreds to choose from. I've read almost the whole series of Jack Reacher for 50c each, whereas they are normally a minimum of €8 even on the Kindle. These cosy evenings with the wood burner warming the whole house with free wood, roasted chestnuts (if I don't forget about them and find little black nuggets the next day) are my favourite evenings. We have had quite a few trees down, and also some big branches, so that's even more free wood. And I've now got an image of Dolly with glasses on reading all the comments!😆 The new gate and fencing looks fab.👍
I really enjoyed listening to your list of all the frugal things that you do which not only save money but help others and the environment. I see you've got a Robert Marston book, he's one of my favourite authors & if you haven't read any yet & see any in the charity shop, I can highly recommend his inspector Colbeck & Nicholas Bracewell mysteries which I'm making my way through for about the third time 😊
Hi Jane, hope you both are well. I was wanting to know how to cook my apples for apple pie filling and how to bottle them? Hope you are having a wonderful day. Bertha
I added them raw to the sterlised jars with a bit of sugar and water and water bathed them for 20 minutes from boiling. I also added a dash of lemon juice.
Enjoy seeing what kind of hobbies and projects you have on the go. Jane, I am a fan of Philippa Gregory as well. I just picked up Tidelands from the library today. There are several books in this series. I have also enjoyed many of the books in the Plantagenet and Tudor series. Have you read any of Hillary Mantel novels?
I do the same with dish liquid, add a bit of water when it gets to the end. Also buy big pkgs of meat when on sale then divide/freeze. Btw, did you get your power back yet??
Hello Dolly:) Loved your video; it warmed my heart to see that I was now doing the same frugality tips as you are showing us. My mum would do that but at the time I did not see the benefits of it. PLease show us more.
Do you need to get up during the night and put more wood on the fire? I used to stay with a friend at his family home in the mountains in southern California, and we had to keep getting up during the night to load up the fireplace.
Another who always purchases the bigger package (you are right it seems as if those are the ones on sale) and repackage into serving for two sizes. God bless.
I’m in increasingly difficult financial situation with endless mortgage increases here in Australia. Council rates went up $400, insurance $400 and that’s just for starters. I’m not buying anything I don’t absolutely need and I ‘shop from home’ first. And it’s been good. I haven’t needed anything. I use my dishwasher though. I detest washing dishes by hand. Just can’t do that.
love your house - at first I thought it was painting or something - looks like a book cover - enjoy your content - I freeze left overs - tonight it is mash, carrots and swede with peas and beef and onion gravy - all left over and defrosted then titififlated up x take care x
I am working on a hexagon quilt made from other people's fabric offcuts, which is a joy to me. I also have a quilt made from retired tee shirt pieces, backed with remnants of fleece fabric that I have used on previous makes (good and washable for kids' quilts), so the only cost is the sewing thread, and I use stuff I have in hand for that.
I am curious what you do with the materials you have made into shapes and put together. What do you use them for? One I see assembled and it is so pretty.

Our wood heater is nowhere near as nice as yours, but on one side of the stovepipe is the hot water kettle and the other side usually has a tall pot for scraps for the chickens, even rinsing pots and dishes and pouring that into the pot, adding some free rice, a couple of cups of barley from the feed store...they love it, and we get eggs in return. Whenever I finish a bottle of oil, I put it upside down in a container (cap on) and after a day or two, another tablespoon or two of oil collects.....takes no effort to save a few cents. Something that I do every day, is watch videos like this, because there is invariably something useful that I haven't thought of.
I love easy reads too. I'm not much into the "bodice rippers" (romantic novels). Prefere rereading classics and spy novels. Or murder mysteries as long as they are not too gruesome!

Or, as we see it, if you're frugal, you can retire sooner. What's wrong with being frugal, which of course is different from being either poor or broke. We were just as frugal when we were still working.
So cute that Dolly can read! 😅 You have made me think about what we do to save money. One big thing is that we still live in the bungalow we bought in 1976. It needs work but that will be my husband's hobby when he retires.
Greeks who eat the healthiest in the work we eat the entire cauliflower even the beet greens never do we eat just the root only carrots do we eat the root! X
I make dog food . I use chicken I’ve cooked in pressure pot or crock pot, shred it, add can of mixed vegs , add cooked beans or some rice , add supplements such as ground garlic, dried lettuce greens ground into powder, grind rosemary, coconut oil. Vary meats in their diets. Saves me a ton of money as frugal & much healthier if I make it myself. Dogs love it. 6 pack of purina can food can cost almost $20 but I get reduced chicken for $5, can of mixed vegs for 60 cents & grow my herbs to air dry & ground. NC in America
I loved your video. You have such a beautiful home! I get my books at the thrift store, too (and take them back when I finish). I noticed you had books by John Grisham and David Baldacci, those are two of my favorite authors.
Very good tips. We have a public library nearby where we check out books for 3 weeks for free. The library also has free activities which we enjoy. Twice a year they have a plant exchange where people bring in plants they don’t want or cuttings of plants and people exchange for other plants. So much fun!
Glad you all are well. Yes, I buy all my meat in bulk during specials.I divide like you and I freeze. Your gates are perfect. I actually bought 4 large packs of mushrooms on closeout price. I flash froze them on trays then divided up and bagged them up for later use. Hope you all have A good week and no more storms
Mike and Jane just wanted to thank you for all your time and effort you put into your v❤❤idea's. I live in high Desert of southern California. Been a loyal viewer for some time. I have learned so many ways from you both. Being a senior, we need all your info. Please continue bringing us Joy! God Bless! Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
Nice gates Mike✔️ Waste not want not-use everything. You have certainly have things worked out and organised🌹 I also keep a record of my spending and the library is a fantastic local resource for the 📖 lover Glad to see you back on track after the storm ⛈️
Jane and Mike, I have to comment that the exterior of the place looks absolutely LOVELY with the levelled gravel (?small rock?), new fence/gate, bedding around the house, cement patio/front door area, paint on the exterior, etc. Fantastic!! Wow!!!! (It seems like I wasn't paying close attention sometimes even though I've subbed for years and watch almost every video?!?!) Heidi in Vancouver BC Canada
Dear Ms. Dolly, I love the new music on your parents’ video. So glad you’ve learnt to read and have such good taste in books. Also, the new gate and fencing looks quite beautiful and will keep you safe while adding to your home value. All the best, Sophia in Knoxville, Tn.
Dedicate 1-2 towels to leave at dry to throw in with wet laundry as dries faster. Use dryer balls or make own using wool balls as fluffs clothes in dryer

So cute that Dolly can read! 😅 You have made me think about what we do to save money. One big thing is that we still live in the bungalow we bought in 1976. It needs work but that will be my husband's hobby when he retires.
That's a great idea!
The driveway and gates look just lovely..plenty hardwork spreading that gravel/ stones..but looks fabulous ...
Thanks
I loved your video. You have such a beautiful home! I get my books at the thrift store, too (and take them back when I finish). I noticed you had books by John Grisham and David Baldacci, those are two of my favorite authors.
Thanks
Very good tips. We have a public library nearby where we check out books for 3 weeks for free. The library also has free activities which we enjoy. Twice a year they have a plant exchange where people bring in plants they don’t want or cuttings of plants and people exchange for other plants. So much fun!
Evening Jane and Mike very enjoyable video and what a cracking job Mike did on the gates - lecy back on then Jane
Thanks and thankfully yes after 8 days.
Ooh! Thank you! I am fascinated by language and you've just introduced me to a new British slang term!😊
Lots of inspiring tips here, as ever. Noticed your stove fan on your wood burner, any good?
Not sure it does much to be honest.
Sounds great and thank you
Eating vegetarian at least 1-2 days/week will also save you money. Lentils and beans are cheap and nutritious - I make black bean burgers a lot.
Enjoyed your video today! I do many of the same things that you shared!
Wonderful!
We do the same with books…..stock up before winter!
Keeps us occupied
Lovely ideas???❤
Thank you! 😊
If you have orange & citrus peel put it into a glass jar with vinegar & use that to clean & its cheap & makes your room smell lush
Thanks
Add bit of dish liquid detergent to the pump style hand soap dispensers & rest water to save money
Thanks
Mike and Jane just wanted to thank you for all your time and effort you put into your v❤❤idea's. I live in high Desert of southern California. Been a loyal viewer for some time. I have learned so many ways from you both. Being a senior, we need all your info. Please continue bringing us Joy! God Bless! Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
Thank you Donna
So glad Dolly reads the comments! Meowww
Philippa Gregory is one of my favorite authors!
Another thing about keeping the kettles going on the wood stove is it adds moisture to the dry winter air
Thanks Ann
Nice gates Mike✔️
Waste not want not-use everything. You have certainly have things worked out and organised🌹
I also keep a record of my spending and the library is a fantastic local resource for the 📖 lover
Glad to see you back on track after the storm ⛈️
Your fire sounds lovely. Miss having a fire place.
Thanks so much
Dear Ms. Dolly, I love the new music on your parents’ video. So glad you’ve learnt to read and have such good taste in books. Also, the new gate and fencing looks quite beautiful and will keep you safe while adding to your home value. All the best, Sophia in Knoxville, Tn.
Thank you so much!
Dedicate 1-2 towels to leave at dry to throw in with wet laundry as dries faster. Use dryer balls or make own using wool balls as fluffs clothes in dryer
Thanks
