  • The Aiki Dojo 2 Minute Technique - Tsuki
Santiago Almaraz Sensei, Aikido 5th Dan, demonstrates the basics of tsuki (突き) or “a straight thrusting strike.” The tsuki strike is not necessarily a punch but more of a thrust. The word tsuki means “to stab or penetrate” and so strike is based upon the thrusting motion used with a sword or knife. People often mistake it for gyaku zuki or “a reverse punch.” However, they are different as gyaku zuki is an empty hand attack while tsuki is supposed to represent a weapons attack.

Dig the short format - Isn't that a kokyunage at 1:42?

Hello. It can be kokyunage or iriminage depending on the style or teacher. Furuya Sensei classified it as iriminage but it can be kokyunage. Sorry to be so elusive. It would be nice to have some sort of naming structure for techniques in Aikido and not just "kokyunage" when all else fails. Thanks for watching!
