  • Speed matching loco's can be a real pain!!, the worm drive mechanisms in all our models, don't like being pushed, so this makes speed matching even more important to achieve smooth running consists. This is the technique I use to program my Tsunami's so loco's run smoothly together. If you are new to DCC or decoders, please watch my "Programming Tsunami Decoders for realistic operation" videos 1&2 first so you know what I'm raving on about !!

    Thanks very much David!. No I'm a sparky / Signal tech by trade, but I have worked with wood for a while..LOL,thanks for the compliments!, I only wish I had two good eyes sometimes when doing fine stuff?. Track is Peco code 83, with Tilig, peco and ME turnouts.Good track starts with good bench work and I don't tolerate bad track!! Remember the "6-P's"..proper prior preparation prevents piss-poor performance!!

    Yes Drew, they are very nicely detailed and all the little problems appear to be fixed , the tall gearing is a bit of a concern , especially when running with better geared locos such as Kato's and Atlas, but with a bit of tweaking you can get them running nicely in a consist. I have three now so I'll see how they perform on the layout as locos on the Birdwood sub run pretty hard ...LOL

    Well done Gregg! Thanks for sharing the good tips. Glad you are enjoying your new Intermountain locos. I had the opportunity to run one at my local hobby shop. If I wasn't modeling the 1970's and 80's I would probably buy one myself.

    Thanks for sharing that with us Gregg. This video is a huge help. That's a great looking consist too! If you think those Intermountain's have tall gears you should see the old Athearn Genesis'. Especially ones that are a few years old and don't have smooth drives. It's more like watching the Enterprise go into warp speed from a stand still. I think the Tsunami decoder will really be put to the test when I go and try to speed match some of the relics in my fleet.

    Thanks Ben, your very welcome! As we've discussed before, the drive lines are prehistoric compared to other advances in the models! "Warp Speed"...LOL, I have only one Genisis, SD70mac 7 yrs old maybe, it needs a new motor(KAto!) plus the lights changed to LED's...one day..LOL. CV2 is now set at 8 and cv212 is 155. . Yes , you'll have fun with your older units but I'm sure you'll do a good job!

I have now set CV2, start volts to 7, back EMF CV212 to 155 and also the BEMF cut off is now at 60 instead of 40 for the Katos, The IM was stalling on the helix but its better now. I'll do a update of it in a week or two.

    absolutly great, Gregg ! Nice to see, you are happy with this cool buy ! Trust me, I know how "hard" the speed matching is between Kato and Intermountain. my Katos has the same worth in CV 66/95 but the Intermountain have other worths AND different worth in CV66/95. Tomorrow I set the program continues. reverence model is my very old Kato C44-Dash9 AT&SF, the smoothes groveller I have. This is a beautiful thing on my MTH Aces with tsunami installed. they runs with the same Kato setup like a Kato

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      Hi Lee, on the NCE, any new address, 3 or 4 digit is a "long" address , so you must enter the new number in the "long" address. I haven't had a problem with notches changing, but Digitrax may be different. I'm sure someone will know what is going on! Sorry I couldn't be more help mate:-(

    great video! and the slight drifting ive noticed on my locos is eliminated by the weight of the train they are pulling.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      Thank you!, Yes , the weight sorts that out, but don't worry, real locos drift in and out as well, luckily they don't have worm drives so there's no stress on the drive train if they are being pushed or pulled!. The drifting ( by themselves) is a sign that they are perfectly in sync with each other! Thanks for watching.
      Cheers Gregg

    • @BNSFfan2373
      @BNSFfan2373 10 років тому

      the real locos even push or pull eachother some too, EMD's start up faster than GE's do.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      BNSFfan2373 That's true!, I've spoken to some drivers(engineers) and they say that some individual locos hate running with each other..LOL. If our locos didn't have worm drives, they would be much easier to speed match and even more fun to operate!
      Gregg:-)

    • @BNSFfan2373
      @BNSFfan2373 10 років тому

      haha yeah. a short line railroad around where i live had s GP9 that could only run with eacher other due to air break presure beind different on them than the rest of their locos.
      the worm drives are pretty good, its easy to make and maintain.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      BNSFfan2373 True, worm drives are simple , but they make it very difficult to get smooth running in a consist since they can't be pushed..even a little bit! unlike real loco's that can . Proto 2000 are are step forward with their "helical" worms, but they still can't be pushed, but they are a lot smoother and a bit more forgiving!. The only thing worm drives give us is a hand brake when stationary..LOL.

    A quick question...I've adjusted a Kato SD40-2 and it runs really well upgrade but surges and jerks going downgrade. Which CV can be adjusted to smooth this out?

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      Hi Connie, the SD40-2's will sometimes do this if they are on their own, but not with any cars attached.This is just the slack in the gears being taken up as the loco try's to roll faster than the motor is going,if it has a few cars behind it , the cars will push the loco against the gears and you will not see it jerk. If it is new it will be more noticeable as the grease works it's way around the gears . If it is going well uphill and on the flat, then this is usually all the problem is! Hope this helps.
      Cheers Gregg

      It is a new model and

      Eric W.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 років тому

      Connie Wilcox Hi Eric, it will be fine, over greaseing is more damaging than not enough! Put a couple of cars behind it and it should be fine, it's just rolling up to the gears and "bouncing a bit.

      @FishplateFilms  8 років тому

      Hi Gil, I'm afraid I don't know anything about TCS decoders, you will have to check the owners manual to see if you can adjust the min and max speeds? The trouble with these new decoders is that they have features that are not on older ones so it;s difficult to match them up if you cant turn the extras off.
      Sorry I couldn't be more help.

    Hi Gregg. I've struggled to speed-match a recent Intermountain (soundtraxx) to another IM with tsunami (supposedly same speed response). I resorted to setting every CV from 67 to 94 on both... Tweaking over and over until 'almost' the same visible speed at all 28 speed steps (before setting back to 128 steps).Next day, started them up and speed is not the same?! They have to Warm up? I've set CV 209, 210 212 to similar to you.Running them together now and they seem Fine, but I do not want to damage either one. You think they are fine?One observation: one of them slows down More on Inclines and speeds slightly more on declines... -Chris

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  8 років тому

      +chrislef2002 You are becoming an expert Chris! I tried the same thing a while ago with two Katos but gave up, and thats with Katos!! The indivdual speed steps work in theory and with the IM locos I think that is the best way , but they are very inconsistent and do need to warm up! Try setting cv 210 to a value of about 10 and work up, I read an article on Tsunami from the US modellers,and their settings are identical to mine! But they played around with 210. I have great results on my Kats with CV210 at 15 , factory default is 30. Yours will be fine, remember a low bemf (212) will reduce fighting between locos and help with stress. Sounds like you are on top of it mate!!
      How about a video of your IM's running??
      Cheers Gregg.

    • @chrislef2002
      @chrislef2002 8 років тому

      +FishplateFilms Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try the 210 values tonight . and yes, I'll have to make a couple videos soon, like in the next few days!Can you clarify what 210 does as the reference guide doesn't exactly paint a great picture! For 212 my understanding is the higher the value toe more t will pull rather than give way... will that cause a slowdown on inclines?

  • @MrStix72

    G'day love the info I have received watching your videos! I have an Auscision AN class (Pacific National AN5) and have been recommended to install a loksound v4 21 pin MTC. Is there a Tsunami alternative?

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  8 років тому

      Hi Craig, thanks for the positive comments! Glad you are getting some tips from the clips. The AN has a EMD prime mover, 16-710 g3A, so a Tsunami for a SD40-2 would be pretty close! Lok sound are great decoders with nice slow speed out of the box, but I don/t use them for two reasons. 1 - you can't adjust the notching to match other decoders so in a consist you'll have locos notching up at different times and 2, when you select dynamic brakes , the loco slows down a bit which is not what always happens and ones with other decoders will be running quicker. But apart from that they are very good but personally I'll stick with Tsunami. If you can wait , the new Tsunami2 decoders are being rolled out now with many new features!!
      Cheers Gregg.

    I'm going cuckoo! This is not easy. It is quite tedious! I'm speed matching an Intermountain ES44DC to a Walters SD70ACe. Cuckoo-Cuckoo-Cuckoo.....
    Walthers is silky smooth and slow at ss-1. Not the IM. So I've increased CV2=6 on IM. Same on Walthers now. Getting close but that means I'm losing that very slow and smooth first step on the Walthers.
    I guess this is a compromise that must be made??!!?? -Chris

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  8 років тому

      +chrislef2002 Hi Chris, I feel your pain..LOL You could
      't of picked two more different locos to speed match !! Walters Proto are the best runners out there, dare I say a tiny bit better than Kato's???????? I have 3 IM Gevos and they are all erratic in their speeds, no matter how much tweaking I do! I see you were lucky and got one of the new Aces' ! Good for you, it has Helical gearing which is a huge step in the right direction for model locos' and no other maker has stepped up to this. You will find my comment on gearing on a video review of the Walthers SD70 ace, can't remember which one but there are only a few. Try backing off the IM BEMF to about 120 , I think I have CV2 @ 6 also , but with less BEMF so it doesn't fight on the start too much. No more IM for me but I will get a Walthers ace one they are back in stock! Will you get the grab irons later? I feel they are testing the waters with this model and I hope to see more "modern "power from Proto 2000 in the future.
      Good luck and may the force be with you..LOL
      Cheers Gregg :-)

    • @chrislef2002
      @chrislef2002 8 років тому

      +FishplateFilms OK - BEMF, that would be CV212=120 (I'm loosing track!).
      Walthers and Grab Irons - I wrote Walthers about them and they said it is best to find them from 3rd party specialty vendors. After reading how difficult they are to install I believe I'll wait for now.
      On the SD70ACe - Very good price online from Canadian store Action Hobbies Kingsville. (They have some left if it can be other than BNSF). Like a CN... and you know I live near CN and CP mainlines and there are often BNSF and CN consist trains (very long trains).

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  8 років тому

      +chrislef2002 Chris , cv 212 is correct! I think these will come out with grab irons later, I feel they are testing to see if people will try them? Unfortunately most people don't understand the effect Helical gearing has, if P2K made modern units like this one , they would be my entire fleet! Lucky you living near all that action!! Yes with the IM locos, it will be a compromise I'm afraid...no more for me!
