Its because Nick has a habit of saving money. He has demonstrated that multiple times, self plumbing and not going to doctor.
maybe he has brothers. siblings, esp them younger, can steal each other's clothes, underwear included, then run out of clean ones themselves
He probably can't be bothered to do laundry and Schmidt is likely very diligent with his washing, so he wears whatever to avoid doing his own laundry.
