It's like any job. There's people who are good at it and people who are bad. Sadly, you only hear of the bad. You don't hear of the doormen that talk down a violent standoff and get it dealt with without wrestling and rolling all over a bar full of otherwise reasonably nice drinkers.
When people hear "handle yourself" they often think "have a fight". But I think it really means "handle your own emotions". Some people deserve a bit of pain but not everyone.
Comes across well doesn't he? I worked with him for a while and he was a bullshitter. He was into amphetamine and no one really trusted him. I went over to one of the bigger places and never saw him again. It looks like he mellowed out a bit and I liked a lot of what he said here.

I used to find my dad's stories of him being a bouncer boring because he'd repeated them a fair few times but boy I'd give anything to hear them again.

@@skipeveryday7282 No different to me and my son, I worked on the door when I was younger Never hit any one but put a few people out mainly because they had to much to drink. I didn't see that as a green light to give them a good leathering, a few years later I was on the receiving end of it I wont bore you with the details 😂 luck had it my brother was in the same club they started it we finished it. We had to go to crown court for Afray as luck had it the truth outed and we were fined for the damages but got off with a suspended sentence. I pride myself that my son is nothing like me but he hasn't grown up in the environment I did. We all have regrets bud but by the sounds of it you and the other lad in this thread have taken a lot from there experiences with there fathers, stand proud boys RESPECT ❤

Thats a small number compared to the bouncer deaths between 2006 and 2013 only thing is whenever a bouncer dies nobody counts it as "bouncer"death but they just count it as another normal guy getting stabbed so nobody really keeps count on the bouncer deaths but if u donur research u will find out the number. its not like when a soldier dies and everyone counts the specific number of "soldier" deaths

In Finland doormen have to follow same rules as normal guards, police etc. Remove treath, with minimal force.
So there really is no "throving out", more like gentle removal.

Not 100% as the practises have changed... nowadays they should be more prepared, more aware, and more knowledgeable (not all just be about hitting things)
Mr.PianoMan That’s absolutely not true. The number of young unprepared pieces of wet flannel stepping into jobs on the door now without even ever had a fight let alone confrontational situation, is crazy. If there was a bit more of the old school demeanour around clubs would be a much safer place. Too many arse holes know they can get away with certain types of behaviour because it’s harder to enforce.

I worked with Paul, brilliant doorman, leader and friend!!! I remember the day he is on about at Tower Lounge....we even had police on horses come in to split us all up. We had a good strong team who kept everyone safe. Paul has earned a well deserved rest! Stay safe guys!!!
I worked on the bar at tower lounge...not when this incident happened...but that place was bonkers...its not there now...I loved it and hated it lol, could be hilarious or a nightmare 😆

There's nice doormen and nasty doorman but I remember one time I was being picked on in a club in Birmingham and I had a quiet word with the bouncer and he told me to point them out and not to worry he went over to them and they left always been very thankful for what he did

How were they picking on you
I worked on the doors for a while, at the start it was literally fist to fist if anything kicked off. I always felt comfortable that with the lads I worked with and the lads we knew on the doors of clubs next to or nearby would back us if needed.
There was one night when all hell broke loose and literally every doorman was radioed to one bar that had an all out brawl going, it must have been 100+ people fighting and it spilled outside. It got more chaotic as revellers from a bar next door ended up fighting with them and we were just totally outnumbered. I'd say every door lad that night had some injury that needed medical help, but it ended up being finished when a barrage of Police came rushing in.
Funnily enough that experience never bothered me or other lads as much as our last few years on the doors. Instead of knowing it's just fist to fist we started seeing bottles, glasses etc being used more regularly and more viciously. Most of us left as we couldn't see the point of having our partners, wives, kids being scared to hell of us being stabbed or slashed etc.
Nowadays I don't even go out drinking but have mates who.do and the stories of what goes on is just sickening. I wouldn't be a doorman for double pay these days.
To anyone who is on the doors now, stay safe as possible and always watch yours and your pals backs. Take care.

I’ve previously done door supervision for 6 years and I actually hadn’t comprehended the mental health side of the work until this chap highlighted it. It’s a fair point.
Any bouncers watching this: I know there are alot of dick heads out there but most of us really appreciate you for making sure our nights out are as safe as possible. Hats off to all you good ones.

I worked in clubs/done the doors in Glasgow in the 2000’s best and worst time of my life.
Those times taught me things that have served me well to this day.
My dad was a bouncer/owner of Liverpool’s first House music night club.
The stories he has are much like the ones discussed here ( he might even know this guy being interviewed ). This interview gives me a better understanding of his old environment.
I never thought that the environment he was in could cause such mental stress to the point of being diagnosed with PTSD.
I worked the doors in the 60s, back up apart from the other bouncers, was a knuckle duster in my pocket, and a baseball bat secreted in an accessible area of the club. I trained in Judo and Jujitsu from the 50s and taught many of my doormen colleagues restraint techniques. These were completely alien in those days, but never the less extremely effective. Iv been stabbed, shot at and attacked after the club has closed for the night. Like the gentleman in this video, iv lost teeth, had cracked ribs and hospitalised . Is it worth it? Is it bollocks. My advice for anyone thinking of doing it, dont. Because one of these days you could wake up dead!

Ex-doorman here. Here's a small bit of advice for bar flies and clubbers out there.
If there's an argument/fight between people and the other person/party abruptly and angrily storms out of the venue, get out of there.
Things are most likely going to get messy.
Yuppp. Learned that one from squat parties and raves. Don't fancy seeing another person get stabbed in the head with a screwdriver.
Well in Paul, watched the video after recognising you, 6 years in Blackpool 3 front of house at the large venue mentioned, remember that night well jaw still clicks now, best years of my life on those doors.

I've been out of this profession for years, still can't shake some of the habits. Ill find myself watching people when I'm out and about.
Security and bouncers do not get enough credit. Its a fucking hard job, often a dark job too.
Its good to see the old dude drop knowledge to the young lad and the young lad taking it on board!
I was punched completely out of nowhere once in a club. To this day I assume I just happened to look like someone else they wanted to hit. It was a group of about 5 people who were ready to do real harm. But thanks to the quick action of the security guys at the club, that was the only punch they landed. They were on them like a flash, as another guy helped me out of the situation. 1 minute later I was in an office being taken care of.
So yeah, the doorman has an unpopular job. Like in every profession, they will have some rotten apples. But they are also the guys on your side when you are a victim. I know I owe them.
This makes me wish I could see the older veteran doorman interview as his younger self with the generation before his. If LadBibles around in 10 years find this younger guy and do another. It would make for amazing comparison.
Very interesting watch and scary stories being told. We need people like these guys to make our nights out safe. Full respect to the decent bouncers out there.
My old man did this as a job. He talked about a story where his buddy on the door got stabbed by a screwdriver in his leg. Luckily the doorman had his jeans rolled up on his leg and the guy stabbed the thickest part of the jeans so it just barely penetrated the skin. It's a crazy job.

Workd 10 years on the Doors, no major injuries. I stop working on the Doors because of risks and dangers, - stop working Doors, when I married my wife. Then, while out celebrating a job promotion (in an unrelated line of work) I was refused entry from a bar cause of "dress code" - when my mate asked what he (I) need to wear, the Doorman kicked off and I was king hit by another Doorman from behind. My mate ran for safety and I was kicked and stomped by 7 Doormen (while I was unconcious), I sufferd a life changing injury from a group of angry power tripping Doormen. While reviewing footage later with Police, it showed that it took a massive group of onlookers to stand around my body for the Doormen to stop. I was unconscious for 10 minutes and later in hospital I didn't know who I was or what had happened, and as a result I suffered a brain bleed and Traumatic Brain Injury, I have made a lot of progress one year on in my recovery, however there is still alot of work to do. Short term memory fucked, among other stuff. So, just shows, that there are risk and danger in life always.
I don’t envy them .

@Epoch plus5 umm I was a doorman for 15 years mate I know what they make. Maybe in London they do 30k. I was payed more in 2000 before licenses started.
They make shifts as short as they can now to save money so you dont work "full time"

I almost became a doorman. Some of the stories I've heard from mates that are doormen put me off.
People that get rejected can sometimes come back with an army.
A guy I know prevented a few lads from entering. He got kidnapped a few weeks later, got tortured, and murdered.

I started as a bouncer done some rough clubs and pubs in Manchester and Liverpool, has my fair share of incidents, best one was a guy waiting for me to finish and come to my vehicle with a steel bat, even with a bat he couldn’t get me 😂

@A Volpe I had a few guys drunk boxers a few Thai fighters but all and all not a grate deal most wore just street fighters or had a blade and off guts on ice or pissed off there face
But I had a upper hand as I was sober and have been training in boxing for most of my life and I've been Thai Fighter as well for a few years at that point
A Volpe I’ve had a few that could actually fight mostly amature level boxers and one that said he was a cage fighter but as I’m sober and there drunk plus doing BJJ and Crav Maga comes in handy when you do come across them, it’s not as common for people who actively fight for local boxing clubs to kick off but it does happen but it’s rare it’s mostly local muppets trying to prove themselves
not taking anything away from you, but the 2000's bouncer were very different from the 80/90's bouncers, the 2000's were governed by law

People remember two things.
1. Doormen are your friend and there for your safety
2. Doormen will intervene when required.
They are there to ensure everyone has a good evening, not to stop "your" fun. Worked close to 5 years as a nightclub manager, they have the hardest job and do it amazingly. Some of the biggest kindest teddy bears I know are doormen, but don't fuck with them, their personal safety matters as well.
Respect and listen to them, everyone has a good night.
not always tho, ive been thrown out of clubs for fuckall before, i sat down once to rest and got told im too drunk probably because im small enough for them to pick on, lucky for them im disciplined and have never lashed out otherwise the big dopey fools would of learned the difference between size advantage and life long combat training lol, i also got held and kept for police for defending myself once just because the person attacking me ended up on the floor asleep.

Respect.Operated alot of venues the last 15 years and its true what he says at the end alot of the things stick with you.
I once had two clients who where friends wine bottle the one because they pushed in front of them in the que for happy hour.

Thissmithy Manga correct. I even broke my knuckles once punching my box bag without my gloves. Its not hard to break them and the human skull is really hard. Thats why its always a bad thing to punch someoone in the head without knowing how and where to punch

Every single person who gets chucked out of a nightclub or bar has never done anything wrong according to them. Doorman and the staff in the venues are sober, they see everything. Pissed people are absolute bellends, not many can handle drink and be respectful. Most of them deserve a good beating, get 4 pints down them and think they’re superman.
I think people like Paul should b teaching the newbie’s. It would b a game changer.

I was a 6 ft 275 # 19 yr old. Small club - I was just there for a brew. After I finished - I had heard some large guys creating a problem. I walked to the doorman - and he was bigger and older than me - I told him what the issue was. I just told him, "I will cover your back". That was 42 yrs ago. Much respect! Cheers
