I have tried two generations of Stax headphones that a friend owns. He has the valve Amp & the external EQ unit as well, so it's a very expensive rig. I found that a very interesting sound signature, ultra detaile, which was lovely for some classical & also his electronic music. But that system was far too expensive for me. How does the experience compare with your other high end headphones?
I think you have nailed it yourself. Ultra details, great for classical etc.. Versus other high end headphones, these excel in certain genres. Whereas others excel in other ways.
Thanks for review Gavin, it was very good. Do these headphones require a certain type of amp? or will any high power headphone amp do? Also how does the sound compare with Focal Clear?
Hi Mike. Thanks for your feedback. They do require a certain type of amp , mainly one that's capable of powering the volts needed for them. The Focal Clear have more bass. Dynamics are slightly faster on the electrostatics, otherwise similar in different ways.
Enjoyed the video (as always with your audio reviews) thanks. Guess it was 2,500 each (ah see it is for both from your comment near the end :)) Amazon UK has a seller selling both for 1,300 but I am guessing at that price may not be genuine. Have you tried the Koss electrostatic I got a pair when Drop closed down their European warehouse, they are not bad really fast light and airy with good wide (but more to the sides, not so much out front) soundstage, they also lack bass though, and maybe the electrostatic amp/energizer they come with lets them down a bit as well (unfortunately they do not use the more universal Stax connector but a Koss specific one). Strange I was listening to your video with Apple AirPods first gen. and the dog noises I thought where coming from the wall behind me (scratching and slight banging), I have some reasonably good headphones but that was a realistic sound I do get from them (maybe my hearing being on the wrong side of 50 as well though). Lovely labradors as well! Glad some big companies are sending you stuff to review as well.
Hi Dave, thanks for your kind feedback. I have not heard the Koss electrostatic headphones. You were lucky to grab a pair before Drop shut their EU operation. My dogs did seem to move around a little more just as I hit record! And then they went back to sleep, so I re-recorded the entire video again, and guess what, they woke up and started to move around, That's labradors for you. Lovely dogs as you said! Was really nice of HiFiMan to send this combo across & that price on Amazon is a used item, so probably a good deal, worth checking its both the amp and headphones. I do think, electrostatic headphones need tons and tons of power/volts to drive them properly. Even HiFiMan will admit their top end value electrostatic amp does a much better job. Keep well .
Aha!...twas the black labs that were snoring in that one review huh?...i thought is gavins granpa having a lie down out of view but ive heard dogs snore and it can get human like so am I right?...snoring labs?

Hi Gavin. I was wondering how you would compare these to the Sennheiser HD800 or HD800s which I feel are very analytical.
If I can get a pair then I would.
