  • The DUMBEST thing I've ever done while fishing... After a stretch of brutally cold days, a massive warm front came through bringing the air temp into the low 60s. Suffering from cabin fever, I grabbed my gear and was determined to catch my first bass of 2017. The only problem was the pond that I had planned to fish wasn't as frozen as I had hoped...

    2" or less: STAY OFF!
    4": Ice fishing or other activities on foot
    5: Snowmobile or ATV
    9" to 12": Car or small pickup

    OK, Mike! As a "General Rule" Ice that cracks is safe, Ice that bows will break! That rule is only for walking on it and NOT bouncing up and down on it. Also, you should have KEPT your ice picks around your neck the WHOLE time you were on the ice, and you should have sat in the sled while you were fishing to dissipate your weight. Not harping on you dude, just teaching and would sure hate to see something happen to you! Take care!

    Dude! Black/clear ice is stronger than cloudy ice. Please do not spread misinformation about ice fishing. No ice no matter what color is gonna be safe under 2 inches. But 4" of cloudy ice is a lot more dangerous than 4" of black clear ice.

  • @hunttrapfishthenorth3373
    @hunttrapfishthenorth3373 7 років тому

    that noise is just the ice settling we walk on the lake in our woods all the time as it's easier than walking through the mountains. One thing to note is to avoid the areas where the ice meets any land or thing erected from the water as these areas are weaker. Happy fishing!

    Hey brother, great information and demo with the app/flasher/transducer set up, ill definitely be looking into get one. Sorry you didnt land your bass, that second one looked close to 2-2 1/2lbs. I appreciate the upload and it was quite entertaining and informing (I hit the sub button). 👍Quick Tip: Im sure you probably already know this but, the next time you fish that little gem of a pond and you catch one of those pesky little perch, splice yourself on a 2-3ft piece of flourocarbon as a leader (which has better resistence to the abraisive sides of the ice and nearly invisible underwater), snell on a suitable sized khale style hook with a bit of shot 6-8" , hook just below and to the front of the dorsal fin so whe tight lined from overhead it will create a pendilum type effect and give the perch a slight belly flop on the ice, and drop him down that hole where you lost the bigger bass and prepare for battle. The bigger or biggest bass in that area will make short work out of the free snack. Give it a good 20-30 seconds for the bass to get the perch positioned in order to swallow it and just start reeling! If you decide to give it a try, pleae try to record it for us to watch you catch that bruiser! Good Luck! and even better Catching!

    Mike being an experienced ice fisher I can tell you that water where the we're sitting was from the ice bending down. Not melting.

    You should come up to Lake St. Clair in April and catch giant 20 inch smallmouth every cast on on spinning gear and fly gear, if you want. If you want to look into it I'm sure you'd have a great time up there. I have access to a private peninsula where smallmouth and pike stack up like crazy all April. Let me know if you want to come fish with us there!

    in uk we put a large brick on a rope an smash a channel in the ice where you want to fish we also do the same with a rake head on a rope if there is thick weed kind of drag a channel to fish in not worth the risk with thin ice better to remove the ice

    Just a future tip, you probably didn't know this but do not let the blades of a hand auger or any auger hit dirt. Dirt can dull the blades and the blades need to be really sharp to cut the ice you can ruin the blades so may need to replace them. It can hit ice and snow but don't test depths, hope this saves you some money in the future.

    Can you do a video of how you would fish a jig from the dock into the open water? I have a lot of situations like that around me and I see people fishing them all the time but I'm always worried about my lure getting hung up on the ice ledge.

    I used to fish a lake in Montana that would regularly have clear ice that you could see through...looked sketchy but people drive on it and it is regularly 2 and a half feet thick and I have seen it over 3 feet thick. Clarity of the ice has nothing to do with how thick it is. I also fish a lake in SE Idaho that is usually one and a half feet thick and the auger slices through it like butter because it is full of tiny air bubbles. The lake in MT is solid ice and a bear to cut holes in...it is the reason we went in together to buy a power auger.
