CO2: No Meter, No Problem

  • A lot of people getting into mushroom growing think in terms of ideal, but most of us are starting off without the nice to haves. CO2 meters are a nice to have, I grew high quality mushrooms for years before I ever got one, and now that I have one I only use it out of curiosity. Just read your mushrooms, respond accordingly, and you will be just fine even on a commercial level. If you can afford CO2 sensors and automation for your farm, even better, but most of us start off on the barest of minimum, and beginnings are such delicate times.

@@williamkreth very good I have been running them since fall, and selling them at my local farmers market. I've grown them on a variety of different sized blocks. i like growing them on 15 pound blocks, the fruits are huge. wonderful mushroom. My other mossy creek favorites are the super scallops and pathfinder... Ive also ran their BS26, Rocky Top, and Old road oyster.

Having a CO2 meter you get to know if you have an issue(or what the issue is) BEFORE the mushrooms grow and avoid wasting a grow cycle by just monitoring what you you get. Handy for smaller, less wasteful situations.

That's only if you are able to catch a problem BEFORE mushrooms get stemmy. In my experience, you won't without automation.

In practice it is not very helpfull cause you dont know the CO2 requirement of the strain you are growing before hand. I agree with the man, i bought a CO2 meter and it is, by far, the most useless piece of equipment i bought.

Thanks for sharing ! Cool setup. Speaking personally, having one is half dozen one, half dozen another. Speaking for myself only, I have found experience the best teacher. I try not to rely too much on gadgets because they will not always be around, then one has a crash course to learn when said gadgets or internet is not at fingertips and that could be costly, but of course, I am already "old-ish" thus old school? lol. I am not insinuating anything. Technology can be a great help in many ways. Personally, I will rely on experience where ever I can first. I was going to buy one not long ago, until I seen cost and read comments/researched, pfft. If I had a commercial business, I would probably consider further, but just growing half dozen different ones for my own health and diet inside my home (disabled, unable outside), I can have more visual control whereas many people I could see relying on this with time constraints and wanting more assurance things are running accurate. Also for me, common sense tells me, mimic the environment the mushroom thrives in -- if home dry, add humidifier, put in a hygrometer to make sure enough humidity, which in the winter is hard to achieve, but one can get one for under 10 bucks that monitors temps and humidity. Chances are home has cold air return so you have circulation of air in home, but not enough for mushrooms. I use a small 4" inline duct fan and picked up a HIPA filter (spores/allergies) and inserted. Prior to that used a small fan to circulate the air in the tent when only grew Shiitakes. I try to stay simple. Good luck to all with whatever works for you to succeed, just sharing

I doubled my air exchange a few weeks ago as we had some crazy hot weather here and the oysters were getting leggy, in fact some still are.

Hello . I have watched many of your videos on how to build a mushroom house, I really like and follow your instructions from UA-cam, but I have not succeeded, I am failing, I need someone like you to be a human. The guide is the one who shows the way to be the teacher so that I can build my own oyster mushroom growing house. Can I build a mushroom house in Vietnam and follow your instructions??? Thank you very much for reading this message. I am waiting for your instructions

    Awesome video, thanks for it!
    I would have a question:
How do you protect wood from rotting (the supporting elements in the fruiting room)? Do you treat it with something?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm a coder and an automation guy, so all my dashboards are in the process of moving to the cloud. I'll be dialing RH and temps from the beach on my phone. CO2 climbs instantly in my building if my intake fan is shut down. I do monitor CO2 in incubation and the chambers, and my exhaust fan is on a controller, but I keep it around the 600-700 ppm mark mainly by balancing the intake and exhaust fan speeds and just leaving it there. The temps are highly controlled, so there's not much I need to do unless I increase the number of blocks in the building at any given time.

Andrew, you need to practice what you preach, brother. Slow down, man! It's plain to see that you need to take more time to sit back, relax, and really spend MORE time really listening to your mushrooms. You know, not just when the suffocating and SCREAMING for air, but, just day ti day chit-chat, "So . . . how was your week?" "Have you heard and good jokes lately?" You know, stuff like that. You can talk about things like, different shape - and colors - and all of the beautiful things like that.
Seriously, you look a littke stressed. Here's a thought - when is the last time you, and Sam, and the kids have gotten away for a week or 10 days? It really is important to keep that balance. They're only young once, pal.
    Mush love. Stay Awesome.

@Marcell Uche Ummmmm - okay. I was just kind of thinking about the movie "Spinal Tap" and that song "Listen to the Flower Children Sing" and given it seem to be kinda inline with Andrew's sense of humor in particular, kinda wanted to say hey to him and Mrs. Mossback just because I miss being able to watch and comment as often as I used to. They know that I don't use multiple social media platforms and so forth, because I have plenty to do that does not involve a screen - at all.
I really do mean that thing about he and Samantha and the kids getting away for a week or two. Camping and water parks go really well together. Who doesn't love water-slides? I mean, COME ONE!
