Glad to see that your tank is thriving coral wise, hopefully you figure out what's going on with the fish. I just had my second 32gal biocube crack 2 months after the last one cracked, in the same spot 😞. Last time I was home and managed to save everything, this time it was 2hrs later and the tank only had 10 gallons left(5-7 that was saved because it was in the back filter/pump section). Had received my first big coral shipment from Top Shelf Aquatics and lost almost everything. I've seen you come back from an almost empty tank, so it gives me some hope that although it's a big punch, in time I'll be able to rebuild.
Wow Billy, I am completely clueless at this point.. I've been in this hobby 20+ years and this by far has me puzzled !! I've never seen a system wipe out like this and leave the one breed behind. Losing everything except the chromis and not losing a one of them points all ten of my fingers to them. I do know this much, I wont be adding any chromis to my new system after seeing this. Another reason I love this hobby, you learn something new all the time. Keep us posted as to how the chromis behave. I'm so curious !! Thanks for sharing 🤗
Crazy. Again, so sorry Billy. Although it’s awful, it’s another one of the fascinating things about this hobby - you just never know what’s going to happen next. ☹️
This is a tough one Billy. Losing one fish sucks let alone 6. Here are my 2 cents. Marine velvet moves fast it is capable of killing a lot of fish fast. Typically you will see heavy breathing, the fish do hide a lot more because they are more sensitive to light. Swimming into power heads or high flow like they are trying to breath better. When I had velvet the only 2 fish to survive was my one chromis and a yellow coris wrasse. The chromis was not affected. Maybe they have thicker slime coats that make it harder for the parasite to take hold. The kole tang looks really beat up though which puzzles me. I hope you figure it out. 👊
My chromis lay eggs about every two weeks. Eggs are usually on the side and back glass or on a frag rack I temporarily have in there right now. Aggression does ramp up but no deaths in my 75. I have 5 chromis and 13 others in that tank
Sorry Billy for the the fish loss. Btw i found some small plastic pieces in omega brine a year ago. Just my experience and not saying thats your situation and i am not bashing omega. That can happen probably anywhere. I have had chromis breed in my tank. They can be boisterous during that time. You can hear an audible clicking of their teeth or jaw through the tanks glass and their fin coloration changes to more iridescent green. They will shimmy with one another. I didnt loose any other fish and there were 6 chromis in a 40 breeder. From the screenshot i took it was hard to see any coloration change, but the eyes of one looked stressed. May not be anything but the angle of my shot. Thought i would share my experience.
I've had 4 clowns and a sailfin tang for two years, they all of the sudden attacked one of my male clowns, and my cleaner shrimp. Lost both of them. Viscous little monsters...
Sorry to see Billy. My money is on flukes. Twitching heads, heavy breathing, frayed fins? They can do a number on a fish’s gills, maybe this was the cause? Try a fresh water dip on one of the casualties and see if anything falls off.
Sorry for your loss man.. I lost my flame angel do to ick this weekend and two blue reef chromis randomly died. Side note , I'm glad I'm not the only one with detritus on my sand bed haha.
Sorry for the loss. To lose all the fish that fast in an established tank is very unusual. What is really odd is the Chromis behavior. It is almost like there is a predator in the tank.
sorry to hear about that Billy, I also recently lost loads of fish after i intruced a moorish idol, I never bothered about ich comes and goes, but this time wasnt ich, and because was working night shifts wasnt able to help, especially to catch all fish to fresh dip them,if i could probably would be alive by now, i did try to fresh dip while i ordered cupramine, while i fresh dip ive found flukes, I got some survivors just like you ,green and yellow tail chromis ,six line wrasse ,i would say flukes buddy
Sorry about the losses, I know the feeling, been there before. I've never known my chromis to be aggressive. I've also always had the theory if your corals look fine then you've done nothing wrong to the aquarium. Sometimes fish die for no reason. Good luck on future endeavors my dude!
Man so sorry to see this. My first thought was stray voltage but I see you already checked for that. I'm also noticing some slight dusting on your sandbed. Possibly some form of Dino's that can be toxic?? Just a guess. Sometimes we just never know which is super frustrating. Glad the Chromis are still staying strong. Behavior is super strange. Hope it all works out for you.
I guess it is also due to the size of the tank itself. There is no where to run for the other fish in case of agression coming from a few that are getting territorial. In larger tanks, enough room can prevent this kind of disaster. I have read that these schools of Chromis should contain an odd amount of fish. Why? No idea, but since I have a tank about the same size as yours Billy, I was aiming for a few Chromisses myself. I loved the sight of these groups swimming together in a smooth way. 5 would have been my number, but after this, I am going for only 3 individuals. Sorry for your loss Billy, but as always there is probably a lesson te be learnd..
Hey, that’s gotta hurt, I lost a lot of fish due to my own stupidity having cleaned a rock with white vinegar and didn’t rinse it properly, but to lose them without rhyme or reason hurts, my Chromis never hide away, they are always out and about, even when lights are out. Hope you find out the reason, keep your chin up 👍
Wow I didn’t realize the Chromis could do that! My clownfish will attack anything when they’re breeding as well. If I were you I wouldn’t add any more fish, or get rid of the Chromis and get some more docile fish. I had to kick my clowns out to a 10 gallon QT tank while I’m stocking my main display. Good luck and when you get new Fish, consider getting captive Bred PJs and bangai. Ora now has black cardinals that would school under your cave and look pretty awesome.
I'm very sorry for your loss BILLY I wish I could help but I'm still new with this Hobby and I'm I'm fighting aiptasia really bad and I'm thinking about taking everything apart starting over I'm giving up on it I got peppermint shrimp I got a filefish and I have tried aiptasia x with no luck
Thanks, and I've never had aptasia before. I know it can go crazy in a tank. I myself would probably replace everything if all the solutions didn't work
Sometimes frozen is contaminated after leaving the manufacturer before it arrives at the LFS. Although your chromis fish should also be gone too in that case 🙄🥺 did you examine the bodies?
Crazy man, after watching the video, I truly believe the fish was stressed!!!!! A very stressful environment can kill a fish fast 💨 this makes me don’t get GC fish anymore
Sorry about your fish dieing, that's a tough one. Them hiding in the rocks is very interesting. I'm no expert but here is my 2 cents. The bigger one is the dominant female and she is making the smaller male "submit". Have you seen them square up and mouth each other? (kinda like Kissing Gouramis). If they are spawning they will lays eggs on a flat surface (mine always lay on rock) and the male will swim over it and shake to fertilize kinda like clown fish. If you feed the tank and they don't come out to eat they are definitely guarding eggs imo. As far as them breathing heavy and shaking in the corner mine do this a lot, its just them working out dominance/courting...Whether or not they killed the other fish I have to think about it some more....
I see a lot of damage on the fins, like nipping/biting. Maybe those Chromis legitimately turned wolf pack on them. Im far from any high level of expertise but if all is in order, it would only leave hostile fishies.
Chromis can get very violent; so I'm afraid that your assessment about breeding is likely. My other thought is velvet, as that can kill extremely quickly, and it can absolutely hitch hike in on frags.
They are defiantly breeding. I imagine that they are hiding in the rock work protecting their nest. Have you looked for eggs stuck to the rocks around where they are hiding?
Could I be so bold as to recommend you invest in a microscope? Even a modestly priced one works fine, and a gill-scraping would allow you to quickly and easily confirm/rule out parasites such as velvet, ich, and flukes.
Looks like parasitic behaviour, looks like these fish are looking to each other for removal like a cleaner fish. I would suspect oodinium. These chromis have a little resistance I would guess. Good luck
Well you have to rule out velvet because the chromis are still alive so you may have a real wolf pack in your tank ? 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Sorry that you had this happen bud
Sorry about the loses Billy, that sucks😎
Thanks man
Wow that’s crazy! Sorry fir your loss. Please keep us posted. Maybe they are spawning and causing havoc while doing so! Smfh
Thanks, I'll bounce back 👍
Glad to see that your tank is thriving coral wise, hopefully you figure out what's going on with the fish. Damn man that suck too😟
I would agree, it's spawning behavior. Do you know if they are TR or WC? I hope you do get the definitive answer. Liked and subbed.
Thanks Caylor, what's TR or WC?
how long did this take? how long where you away from the tank? where thereany half dead ones or were they all completely dead when you noticed?
Took less than 48 hours. I wasn't away from the tank at all. I found one half dead, and the others were just dead
Any possibility of velvet coming in on the frags? Wouldn’t the skimmer overflow with the extra protein released by the chromis during breeding?
The fish were spotless. It's a mystery for now
Wow Billy, I am completely clueless at this point.. I've been in this hobby 20+ years and this by far has me puzzled !! I've never seen a system wipe out like this and leave the one breed behind. It's crazy right, it's got me totally baffled
I wouldn’t worry Billy. Most people have Ich in their tanks. You can manage it. Keep the fish healthy.
👍
Crazy. Again, so sorry Billy. Although it’s awful, it’s another one of the fascinating things about this hobby - you just never know what’s going to happen next. ☹️
Yup, it's the strangest thing so far for me

Idk man. It's a crazy mystery at the moment

That's so crazy!!! I been hearing a clicking noise and can't figure out what it is!
Terrible news Billy. I hope you figure out what happened. Your videos demonstrate how much you care for your fish and corals. Hang in there.
Thank you Scott
I've had 4 clowns and a sailfin tang for two years, they all of the sudden attacked one of my male clowns, and my cleaner shrimp. Lost both of them. Viscous little monsters...
Fish are so unpredictable it seems
Sorry to see Billy. My money is on flukes. Twitching heads, heavy breathing, frayed fins? They can do a number on a fish’s gills, maybe this was the cause? Try a fresh water dip on one of the casualties and see if anything falls off.
I will if I can catch one👍
Sorry for your loss man.. I lost my flame angel do to ick this weekend and two blue reef chromis randomly died. Side note , I'm glad I'm not the only one with detritus on my sand bed haha.
My buddy got a ick outbreak too with no new addition to the tank for months. It's so random
Sorry for the loss. To lose all the fish that fast in an established tank is very unusual. What is really odd is the Chromis behavior. It is almost like there is a predator in the tank.
Exactly. They hide all day now

It could be. The fish were spotless when they died, but if I can catch a chromis I'll dip it for sure
Sorry about the losses, I know the feeling, been there before. I've never known my chromis to be aggressive. I've also always had the theory if your corals look fine then you've done nothing wrong to the aquarium. Sometimes fish die for no reason. Good luck on future endeavors my dude!
All the coral looks perfect. I'm clueless
Thanks man. Sandbed has some diatoms from adding some marinepure. Hopefully the chromis pull through
Maybe something leached out from the rock. I found a rusty screw imbedded in one of my rocks while I was aqua scraping my tank.
Could be

That's crazy , hope it all levels out!!! Sucks losing anything but to get hit like that is hard !!!! Good luck!!!
Thanks man 👍
Wow that's too bad 😢
Yup😟

Damn. I’m sorry to hear buddy! ☹️
Thanks man
Still sorry for your loss
Thank you 😊

I'll have to look into it if I can catch these guys
Nice to you see post the ugly side of the hobby and not just the good moments. Props to you 👍. Come back stronger than ever 💪.
💪💪💪👍 thanks man
I'm very sorry for your loss BILLY I wish I could help but I'm still new with this Hobby and I'm I'm fighting aiptasia really bad and I'm thinking about taking everything apart starting over I'm giving up on it I got peppermint shrimp I got a filefish and I have tried aiptasia x with no luck

The only thing I can think of that kills fish so fast and sudden is velvet. No visual sign of it though. I assume?
No signs at all. 😟🤔
Sorry Billy to hear that
Thanks man
Sometimes frozen is contaminated after leaving the manufacturer before it arrives at the LFS. Although your chromis fish should also be gone too in that case 🙄🥺 did you examine the bodies?
I didn't cut the fish open or anything. They looked to be in perfect condition and eating great all week.
Crazy man, after watching the video, I truly believe the fish was stressed!!!!! A very stressful environment can kill a fish fast 💨 this makes me don’t get GC fish anymore
Yup, I think they got bullied hard by the chromis
I'm so sorry for your losses dude😭
Thanks Tina 😭
Listening to your story and watching the fish... I think you are maybe right... the probably killed off the others.. 😥😥
It what it seems like at the moment 😭
Sorry about your fish dieing, that's a tough one. Them hiding in the rocks is very interesting. I'm no expert but here is my 2 cents. The bigger one is the dominant female and she is making the smaller male "submit". Have you seen them square up and mouth each other? (kinda like Kissing Gouramis). That's good 2 cents👍 it's exactly what mine are doing.
I see a lot of damage on the fins, like nipping/biting. Maybe those Chromis legitimately turned wolf pack on them. Im far from any high level of expertise but if all is in order, it would only leave hostile fishies.
Yup, that's what I'm leaning towards
What a bummer! I would think you would have seen some of the agression, if it was death by agression, though.
I think it was happening under the rocks.
did little billy dose muffins again? Do you see any eggs on the glass? looks like breeding in my laymans eyes
No he didn't. I been looking for eggs but I can't find any
That’s weird. I haven’t seen aggressive chromes. Good luck figuring it out.
Thanks RR
Sorry to hear bud you’ll bounce back
Thanks man, you know I will 👍
Sorry to see this man 😭
Thanks bud👍😟
I had a school of 12 large chromis in my 125, I ended up getting rid of them because they started killing my other fish.
Damn, my chromis might have turned into a wolf pack 😟
Sorry mate - big hugs
Thanks Sunny
Sorry to hear that you loss fish...
Thanks Will. Hopefully the chromis pull through
Ive invested a ton of money and time into this hobby. I hate when shit like this happens especially when we have no explanation. Good luck man
Definitely sucks
50% water change?
Yup, did that and added fresh carbon after the first fish died
Sorry to hear this :( hopefully you find out. When in doubt I usually drop some carbon in just in case if my water perameters check ojt
Yup, dropped in fresh carbon just in case👍
That tang was beat down. Fins shredded
Yup. He was the first to go too
Chromis can get very violent; so I'm afraid that your assessment about breeding is likely. My other thought is velvet, as that can kill extremely quickly, and it can absolutely hitch hike in on frags.
Yup. But the fish where spotless and eating the day they died
Sorry to hear Billy. That would be interesting to find if the Chromis are the cause.
I guess when I add new fish we will see
So weird! That sucks they died.
Yup, first issue I've ever had since day 1
😭😭😭 Stay Strong Buddy
I shall be strong😁
They are defiantly breeding. I imagine that they are hiding in the rock work protecting their nest. Have you looked for eggs stuck to the rocks around where they are hiding?
Yup, been looking everywhere and I can't find any
Sorry dude, Im stumped. I cant believe green chromis' can kill tangs.
They are like a wolf pack
unresolved mystery. You may never know why :(
Nope,😟😟
Parasites can come in on frags. That would be my guess Billy. Sorry to hear this.
Yeah, I could be something internal. I have no idea
Could I be so bold as to recommend you invest in a microscope? Even a modestly priced one works fine, and a gill-scraping would allow you to quickly and easily confirm/rule out parasites such as velvet, ich, and flukes.
If I have any more fish die I'm bringing it to my buddy that has a good one👍
Very interesting. 👀
😟😟
Just had the same issue. 😢
That sucks
Sorry man!
Thanks Wesley
Sorry that happened to you Billy. More than likely the chromis pounded your other fish 🐠
Thanks man, that's what I'm thinking too
Test for ammonia. just saying who knows sometimes it just happens man keep your head up.
Checked and my lfs checked it, zero on both tests😟
That's a head scratcher🤔 if it were disease them all should be dead? But the 6 look fine??? Hmm sometimes it stays unsolved?? Coral looks freat🙄🌿💜
Yup, this one is a mystery
Any trace of ammonia? That will make them breath heavy. 🤷🏻♂️ I’m sure someone mentioned it though. Good luck man! Always sucks!
Zero ammonia. Tested it on Saturday and Sunday
Sorry billy. Those fish do like beat up. Didn't know chromis can be so mean.
Me either 😟
Hey billy when I used to keep cichlids this was a sine of breeding and that one fish that was shaking is a sine of a alpha male could raise aggression
They were definitely aggressive all weekend
Stray voltage possibly take a multimeter one probe in water and one to a ground see what ya got
That was the first thing I did, no issues with voltage 👍
check for stray electricity
I did👍 plus I have a ground probe.
I dont know of any other person that has that many chromis and for that long. Unfortunately I dont know how to help. Good luck!!
Thanks bro. Hopefully in the future when I add new fish they won't attack it
Looks like parasitic behaviour, looks like these fish are looking to each other for removal like a cleaner fish. I would suspect oodinium. These chromis have a little resistance I would guess. Good luck
They seem ok but are still hiding
a little high no higher than .025 billy
It was 00.51 for the past year with no issues 😟
Well you have to rule out velvet because the chromis are still alive so you may have a real wolf pack in your tank ? 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Sorry that you had this happen bud
They were definitely aggressive all weekend
check phos billy
0.037 phosphates
Crazy Billy May never know what really happened 👉chromis 🤷♂️
Probably not 😒
This just sucks
Yup, totally
