- Bakarwals are one of the oldest tribes of Kashmir. Kashmiri Bakarwals are a community of nomadic shepherds who live half the year in the mountains and forests to graze their cattle. The Bakarwals are also referred to as the ‘gujjar Bakarwals’. The Bakarwals of Kashmir are one of many shepherd communities of north India and especially the Himalayan states like Ladakh, Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand. The nomadic shepherd communities are called by different names in these states. They’re called Bakarwals in Jammu & Kashmir, Changpa in Ladakh, Gaddi in Himachal and simply Gujjar in Uttarakhand.

I was posted in Kashmir thus know her and her people. All genuine Kashmiri Muslims are Central Asian Aryans and recent converts from Hindus thus the Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits are of exactly same ethnic stock. The Kashmiri language is a Dardic Aryan (Indo-European) language closely linked to the Proto-Aryan language. The Bakarwals, Gujjars, etc. are a wonderful people but not of Kashmiri stock they are alien tribes who come to graze their live stock in this region. The Shina speaking Dards are the Aryan cousins of Kashmiris and Shina is very close to Kashmiri. Also Kashmir Valley has quite of a few non-Kashmiri tribes who have been imported. A significant percentage of Gujjars are the descendants of the Alchon Huns, who were themselves of central Asian origin. Open up Rajatarangini and within it you will find mention of Alakhana the maharaja of the Gujara who ruled Gujrat (which is not far from Kashmir) about 1000 years ago. Recent genetic testing done by the Centre for DNA fingerprinting and diagnostics has linked these Gujjars who reside in Kashmir with ethnic Pashtun Nomads from Kunduz and Baghlan province in Afghanistan. This findings of the study was published in nature magazine.

It is appropriate to use the basic term " GURJAR" . Bakarwals . Vangujnars. and banhiaras are sub sections of gurjars . derived their names according to the profession they adopted

From Jammu and Kashmir..not from Kashmir...as they live in Jammu region for 7 months and their language is Gojri . so don't consider them from Kashmir only
Many gujjars live permanently in kashmir
While others live permanently in jammu while others keep moving between regions.
It is more logical to say kashmir not jammu
First kashmir division has more gujjar bakerwals than entire jammu division
Also gujjar bakerwal are lotly influenced by Kashmiri culture be it language
Gojri right now has good amount of Kashmiri language and tone it. They wear same dress be it pheran kangri many even know Kashmiri
And they mostly migrate to pirpanjal which is geographically culturally ethnically different from jammu where dogras inhabit.
But being a kashmir we don't claim them
Already population of kashmir is high
They should move to pirpanjal and jammu.

Valley is divided majorly in 2 parts Peer Panjal being the dividing feature. Bakarwals are mainly from Poonch Rajouri sectors of Jammu.
In summer they cross highest of ridges for land pastures across the valley. They are basically Pahadi Gojjars. Very Nice People

No they are different from kashmiris they aren't dards. Ethnically they are typical North Indian who migrated to kashmir and gilgit region some 200 years ago.
People of kashmir and gilgit share good amount of culture and ancestry.
