Joe Walsh and the James Gang. This is another reason the 70's was so wonderful to be a teenager who still loves rock and roll. The music was just so great!
I'm right there with you, brother, the 70's were definitely the time to be growing up, great music, big bell bottoms, huge collars, puka shell chokers, and of course getting to be the first to hear this great music some 50 years later...still rock'n, was a radio jock for 30+ years, and classic rock was my forte' ...Rock ON!!!
James Gang performed at last night’s Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in La as well as the one in the UK about 3 weeks ago. Love Joe Walsh😊 pretty awesome that Lex recognized Joe Walsh without knowing he is in this band. You have a great ear for music Lex
@@revwillyg6450 I found a someone live streaming the concert not great quality but it was better than nothing. Paramount was supposed to live stream I don't know what happened. Frustrating
Hey Lex, when you mentioned that it kinda had the same feel as "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh That's because Joe Walsh is the guitarist in this band
Joe Walsh is a master guitarist, and an excellent singer/songwriter. His first Band "The James Gang" was an early 70s Funk/Rock Band, (Funk 49) and then later in about 1975, Joe went solo, and made a few excellent albums. Then "The Eagles asked him to join them, and the rest is history. This is a really great song. Thanks guys
Almost right. Joe left The James Gang in 1971 and then was in Colorado where he put together a backing band called Barnstorm. He made a couple of albums with them, during this time he did his first solo album The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get which had the hit Rocky Mountain Way in 1973. About 1975 or so he was asked to be a permanent member of The Eagles. He's had several solo albums during his tenure with them.
@@edb6690 Joe has never been a full fledged "member" of The Eagles. The original band members, Frey, Henley, Leadon, and Meisner were full members of the band, but not Joe. He has always been a hired gun, a highly paid musician for the band, but full member-nope. Don Felder was given full membership when he joined the band but Joe has always been a hired musician for the band. I read somewhere that Joe preferred things that way. He could do other projects without having to receive the approval of the other Eagles members.
I'm so glad you found the James Gang and Joe Walsh. This is a real blast from the past that I miss. I know others have praised Joe Walsh, but I just want to second, or third, it.
Good catch there at the end, Lex. The James Gang was Joe Walsh’s band before his time as an Eagle or his solo career. It was him singing here, as well as playing all the riffs and solos on guitar. He wrote the song, too.
Yes it does have the Rocky Mountain Way sound because both had Joe Walsh as the lead singer and lead guitar player. He fronted The James Gang from 1969 to 1971, then he went solo before ending up in The Eagles.
This was a big hit for them, what you really need to hear is their Live album, The James Gang live is in my top 10 of live rock albums and is tour de force for Joe Walsh, as he seamlessly moves from hard rock to heavy blues to a nice switch up on the organ and then to a thrilling take on acoustic guitar. Try Stop live to start, it is a killer track. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
I must admit, reluctantly, that I am in general not a big fan of live albums from my favourite bands..but The James Gang Rides Again is an exception..excellent stuff
I definitely recommend "The Bomber" from this same album (James Gang Rides Again). It's a great showcase of Joe Walsh's guitar talent, and it has a surprise or two. Back in the 70s, it was the kind of song you'd listen to with all of the lights turned off so your mind was just swimming in the amazing sounds.
I love love love Joe Walsh. He’s amazing in many different ways. On his own or as part of James Gang or Eagles his guitar skills are world class and his songwriting and vocals are great as well. Nice reaction 🌺✌️
She gets it. It's a simple Boogie Beat with a great bass and a cool drummer and then add one Icon guitarist 🎸 😎 👌 and all we have to do is enjoy the rock and roll music with of course an amazing lead work. I just love hearing any of his music,he pulls of some incredible licks too some of the best songs ever to hit the airwaves and has been always a good fun music. Hope he does another CD and goes on tour. He is top of the bucket list need to see him live.
Joe Walsh is a legend! elected in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.he was in two great bands and had a great solo career.nice reaction ,you guys rock
1973, Camdenton, Missouri- 3 day concert with "The James Gang"," Black Oak Arkansas", "Brownsville Station" and a host of other bands. I still have the scars on the top of my head from being out in the sun too long without a hat. Still wouldn't have missed it being a drummer. Tim Fox and Tommy Aldridge are still 2 of my faves behind John Bonham and Keith Moon!
I saw Joe Walsh & Barnstorm on a Day On The Green in June 1974 at the Oakland Coliseum with Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Band and Jesse Colin Young. Amazing day. I also saw Joe Walsh again 7 years later in 1981 at the Oakland Arena. Super Show! He then joined the Eagles and the rest is history. Such an incredible talent.
Joe Walsh often said one of the worst. things that happened was that Keith Moon of the Who(another hard partyer and drinker)took a liking to him and became friends. Amazing that Joe survived. Keith Moon died at the age of 30.
Ah, the James Gang are massively underrated! One of my favorite bands! Most people only really know them from this song and Funk #49, but there's so many other greats. I'd recommend "The Bomber" or "I Don't Have the Time" next.
Lex picked up on the drumming part of Walk Away. The James Gang drummer (Jim Fox) was a totally underrated drummer. Listen to the live version of Fox's drum solo in the Yarbird's cover "Lost Woman". Phenomenal. Fox had sort of a parade type of marching beat incorporated into some of the James Gang songs.
Unless your a big fan of Joe, most folks have probably never heard his 1985 album “The Confessor” which is also the title song on the album that is a must to hear! Great story about himself giving up his past of drugs and alcohol (while in a relationship with Stevie Nicks). It has a great flow of music that seems to match his feelings with an incredible heavy guitar solo which seems to be an effort to release all of his built-up anger; and a final stern message to all listening about all the things one should give up to live a productive life. Try it, I think you’ll like it!
This is one of my favorite Joe Walsh songs (when he was with the James Gang, of course) because of the killer groove. Joe Walsh has been one of the underrated guitarists in rock, but he's definitely on my list of favorite guitarists because of his technique (phrasing, tone and ability to play great slide guitar) and his versatility, with an ability to play well in almost any genre....plus, he's also a super nice, humble and funny guy.
For a little something different, check out the "electric western" midnight movie from the '70s called "Zachariah". It's about a couple of hippies who live in the desert (Don Johnson & John Rubenstein). The James Gang appear and rock out at one point, and then Elvin Jones, (John Coltrane's drummer) sits in on the drums and cooks them. The band's other great songs are "Funk 49", "Bomber" and "Ashes, the Rain, and I" which is a beautiful orchestral ballad with acoustic accompaniment, and my solid favorite.
Back in 1968 before the James Gang hit it big they used to play a bar in Kent Ohio called JB's. I had a fake ID. We were there every weekend. A great live jam band.

Joe Walsh sold one of 2 Les Paul Guitars to Jimmy Page back when UK didn't have many so they were hard to get. Jimmy used it a lot including the 1973 MSG concerts.
It’s called multi tracking. They layer guitar sounds on top of each other. At the end you’ve got three guitar sounds but there aren’t three guitar players in the group. They layer them in the mixing process. And yes, the very deep sound was the bass.
