The opening paragraph discusses about the Chief’s response to the changing times. They have lived in this land for hundreds of years and that the sky is a witness to that. The chief says that they never thought that the situation would change but though it seemed eternal like the sky, the situation may change. Today is fair, but tomorrow it may change as they are on the verge of this change .However, the words of Chief Seattle will remain constant as the star. Seattle says that the Great Chief at Washington (The President) can rely upon him with as much certainty as he can upon the return of the sun or the seasons. The White Chief (Governor) says that the Big Chief (President) has sent them greetings. The white setters are huge in number just like the grass that cover the vast prairies. On the other hand the native Americans are very few in numbers. They are like the few scattered trees after a storm had swept the plains. The Governor has offered to buy the land but he would provide a separate area for the natives to live comfortably. Chief Seattle feels that it indeed is a generous offer as they are no longer in need of an extensive country with their dwindling population. Chief Seattle tells ironically that the offer is generous as the Red Man ( the natives) is now powerless and the Governor does not need to respect our rights with such fewer numbers. Chief Seattle talks of the untimely death of the people of his tribe. The glorious times when his people were like the waves of a wind-ruffled sea has passed away. The grandeur and magnificence of the tribe not longer exists. It is only a mournful memory. He says that he will not blame his paleface brothers (white settlers) for this but the natives must also be blamed for their present condition. He elaborates on how the natives are responsible for their own destruction. Young native Americans often act impulsively on seeing some wrong or injustice. They become violent and paint their faces black, the goodness within them is not revealed any longer. It denotes that their heart is black and they are cruel and relentless. The old men and women cannot control them. He criticizes the youth of his race for their insensible behavior. Seattle mentions about the help offered by the President if they agreed to the land treaty. A message has been sent to the natives that if they follow the sovereignty of the Big Chief then they will be protected from their ancient enemies- the Haidas and the Tsimshians. Seattle wonders whether it will ever be possible to stay like brothers as the tribals and the white people belong to different origins and destinies. The God of the white settlers is not the same as that of the natives . He says that their God protects the paleface ones and leads them as a father leads an infant son. But, He has abandoned his Red children. Even the Great Spirit, God of the natives no longer takes care of His children. The condition of the natives are like the orphans, they cannot look anywhere for help. They can never be brothers. The God of the white settlers can never be the God of the natives and renew the prosperity or awaken their dreams. Even if it is true that there is one common Heavenly Father, He must be partial. He has come to his paleface children but never to His Red children. God has given His paleface children laws but has no word for the natives. As the stars fill up the firmament the Red children once filled the continent in large numbers. But god has neglected the native Americans. Seattle concludes that they are two distinct races with separate entities. Seattle then speaks of their differences in religion and reverence to the ancestors. To the native Americans, the ashes of their ancestors are sacred but the white settlers do not regret their decision of leaving their ancestral land and coming to a new place. In regards to the religion there is a vast difference. It is written by the iron finger of the God on the tablet for the white Americans. They are supposed to memorise it. But to the Red men, religion is a way of life, it is being close to nature. However, the religion of the natives is the tradition of their ancestors, their dreams. It is written in the hearts of people. The white settlers soon lose their connection with their ancestors after their death. They are soon forgotten and never return. For the Native Americans reverence to their ancestor is paramount, after death the natives are never disconnected from their land. They always return to their land, they yearn for their descendents. The white settlers and the native Americans are poles apart. These two different races of people are like day and night. Seattle says that the proposal given by the Governor must be acceptable to his people. They will dwell apart in peace. In this dense darkness, the words of the Great White Chief seemed to be the words that will help them move forward. Chief Seattle says that the days of the native Americans are numbered, there is not a single star of hope in the night sky. Wind also seems to mourn their end as the Red Indians are so close to nature. He prepares his people for the impending doom as no one will be spared from decay. It is a common fate that White men cannot defy. Chief Seattle feels that the remaining members of his tribe will also perish like their ancestors. It is the order of nature and the natives must not regret it. One day in the future the white settlers will also perish, they will face the same destiny. Chief Seattle says that though the white men walked and talked with God they cannot be exempted from the same destiny. Chief Seattle continues by saying that it is time to ponder over the proposition made by the Governor. But irrespective of whether they accept it, he would like to put forward few conditions. The natives must be allowed to visit the tombs of their ancestors, friends and children at any time they desire. Every part of the land has been a sacred place for the natives. They had a glorious past here. The rocks which seem to be dumb to the white settlers, thrill with the wonderful memories connected to the lives of native Americans. The connection that the natives have with the land is so strong that it cannot be broken even in death. The dead soldiers, the fond mothers, glad hearted maidens and the little children who lived there and rejoiced for a brief period, love this beautiful land. They love the stillness of the place. Even after the last Red Man had passed and the white Men think that the natives are a myth, these lands will remain crowded with the people of Chief Seattle’s tribe. When the descendents of the white settlers feel that they are the sole residents of the land, they will not be alone. He opines that the deserted streets at night will be thronged with returning host that once filled them and still love this beautiful land. Chief Seattle ends his speech with a warning. He says that it is true that the natives are nearing their end, they are powerless but they must be dealt in a just and fair manner . He says that the natives are merely going to leave their physical body, but their spirit will remain. Through his speech, Chief Seattle wants to convey that the hostilities should end as they only lead to deaths .He strikes a hope that their good father in Washington would protect them . He is optimistic that his people will accept the new proposition sent by the President. - Summary of her Explanation ....Really great !
