    Just about to order a stabilizer.
    What do you recommend?
    Laing po4?
    Glidecam hd2000?
    Or something else?
    (For gh4 and a7s)
    P.s. I went through ALL of my film gear yesterday and uploaded a vid. (Long and unedited, but you may find some kit you like the look of)

      +biscuitsalive The best non-electronic one i've used is the HD1000. Build isn't perfect, but the gimbal on it is, and that's the most important thing.
      Definitely not the HD2000, that's heavier and bulkier.
      I'd love to have a featherweight Glidecam HD1000 but so far there isn't one on the market.

      +Nitsan Simantov thanks, you arms are bigger than mine so if you say the 2000 is to bulky I definitely believe you :D

    Hey Nitsan, I noticed that you have this stabilizer balanced with the weights to the sides of the sled, as opposed to forth and aft. I'm curious if this is a better way of balancing for a DSLR camera, or perhaps it's a newer way of balancing out your camera? Thank you!

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      Hey.
      It makes no difference to the balance. It's just far more comfortable because you can bring the camera closer to you. I have a video about it in my stabilisers playlist.

    A question, after our previous convo I was pretty set on moving down to an HD1000 (from HD2000), but I went to BVE a couple weeks ago and the Glidecam people really insisted I shouldn't be doing that - their main reason being, one needs the weight of the 'contraption' to help you fly smoothly. In this vid you mention wanting to go even lighter, do you reckon that would adversely affect the smoothness of your shots?

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому +1

      +Tomek I get perfect results with the HD1000. I've heard of "heavier is better", IMO it's complete donkey crap. Just gotta practice!
      But yeah to be fair it's a fact of physics that heavier objects hold their position and need more force to be moved, but IMO heavy stabilizers are shit for actual use. Very hard to spend a lot of time practicing or using them on jobs.

      Nitsan Simantov Your opinion is one I respect a lot, by which I mean to say I'm going back to ebay to find a used HD1000, cheers (:

    Hi Nitsan, I watched your videos a lot making up my mind what stabilizer to buy and how to get it work properly. Thanks for your help! I finally bought the Wondlan Magic 3 (69-122 cm) together with a monopod with hunter head and am trying it today. I like the monopod and the fact that the stabilizer and monopod have the same quick release plate. But my arm got tired after 30 seconds holding the stabilizer. Shaking al over, not really steady at all ;-) Glidecam HD2000 has the same weight but is shorter. Do you think that will make a difference? I shoot with a canon 7d en 24 mm lens. Any tips for a small not to strong filmmaker? Thank you and keep up making a path in the steadicam jungle.

      ps the magic mini was the one I preferred but is not deliverable anymore in the shops in Holland.

      Hi
      There are various solutions.
      My absolute favorite is to make the setup smaller. For example a Glidecam HD1000 with a mirrorless camera. They now also have an even smaller one called the iglide II that might be okay, but i've only tried the first iglide.
      You can also swap hands and learn to fly both ways. I do this all the time, even with lightweight setups.
      A vest is a pain in the ass, it's a huge amount of weight to carry, although it does take the weight off your arms.
      An arm brace is more weight to hold and prevents you from swapping hands, so I don't recommend that.
      You can make a dual-hand holder. Basically connect a friction arm to the handle of the glidecam. They are helpful but can make it more difficult to control and aim the camera.
      Also change the weights so they are aiming sideways, this allows you to hold the glidecam closer to your body which makes a big difference.
      I have videos about most of these in my sliders playlist.

      Thanks, Nitsan for taking your time to answer. You really are helping me out here. I love to stick to my 7d en even need a microphone on top of it sometimes. The body and lens weight 1035 grams without a microphone. The glidecamHD1000 has a maximum load of 1.3 kg. Do you think it's bad that it will be so close to the maximum load? And is there a monopod with the same quick release plate as the glidecam HD1000? I like to be able to change form the one to the other quickly.

    • @femkehoogendoornfemkedus251
      @femkehoogendoornfemkedus251 7 років тому

      Oh for other people who read this, you can't change the position of the weight plate of the wondlan magic 3 (at least not without a screwdriver).

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  7 років тому

      the glidecam has no quick release, you need to add your own. So yes just get one that fits your monopod.
      I've used a 5D Mark III on the HD1000 many times without any issues, however, you'll still be carrying a lot of weight if the camera is heavy. It makes a really big difference.
      There are many mirrorless cameras that will be a really lovely upgrade to the 7D in pretty much every way possible. You can get a viewfinder, tilting screen, better video and audio quality, smaller size, autofocus in video, etc. Just depends what you choose. If money is an issue you could sell the 7D and get something at a similar price. On the lowest price range look for a Panasonic GH1 or Sony NEX-5n.

    Thanks, Nitsan! As an XCam Sabre owner who just can't get the proper knack (believe me I have practiced TONS with only limited success - I guess folks like me don't have the right stuff), I actually like this Eroz IDEA quite a lot for two reasons: 1- It helps keep the controlling fingers in a steady position, and 2- It helps reduce the fatigue. Incidentally - since the Eroz price is pretty insane - I made my own excellent version incorporating a more comfortable grip height for about 2 USD (yes, two dollars), and it is great. The function is good, but the price is the deal breaker on this commercial product. Your YT channel videos are always 100% helpful.

      Yes, your balancing techniques and other tips regarding handheld stabilizers are the best. However, I have simply never completely gotten rid of the ever-so-slight yaw that accompanies walking (you know..the very subtle "look left, look right, look left, ...etc which comes with each gentile step). THAT ALONE is the only remaining but very pesky problem; swinging/pendulum effect have long since been conquered. My little $2 DIY EROZ device helps though.

      Cool.
      The left-right motion is oil that's too thick. Or holding it too tight with the aiming hand. :)

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 8 років тому

      Really?! - I have heard of that on cheaper stabilizers - that would certainly explain it if too much viscosity. It must be the oil then, since I truly have been most gentle with the fingers. Now to find instructions for changing the oil...THANKS!

    hey nitsan quick question you have any tips on taking long tilt shots with the glidecam? glidecam at an angle for a longer shot?

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  7 років тому

      Hey. Yes.
      Have the drop time as slow as possible. You could even try zero drop time, meaning it doen't want to fall in any direction.
      With the hand that controls the glidecam, hold only with two fingers, as close to the gimbal as possible.
      Weights to the sides, not front and back. Allows you to hold it closer to your body which is easier.

  • @robinbrooks9878

    What's the maximum lens length you could go to and still get acceptable results on a glidecam. Wide is nice and stable. But rather warpy. Sort of takes you out of the moment.

    • @AdamOpie
      @AdamOpie 8 років тому

      +Robin Brooks Depends on your skill level, I've been operating for a few years and for certain shots you can get away with 100mm

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      +Robin Brooks
      With the A7S, 8 hours non-stop, without any additional support, just the trick of swapping hands and other similar tricks, like the position of the handle.
      I've also done 14 hours on-and-off with the 5D. That was not fun.
      And yeah, I prefer 35mm. I can get good results with that, but I wouldn't go with a longer lens on a glidecam, becomes too difficult to aim nicely.

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому +1

      +Robin Brooks And yes what Opie said, totally depends on your skill and strength level, etc. Some people will do 1 minute and get tired.

    how is the fatigue? can you take shoots about 15 or 20 minutes

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  7 років тому

      It depends on the person.
      I've done 7-hour shoots on the glidecam with no extra gadgets.
      I do have some tricks like swapping hands in the middle of the shot and holding the glidecam close to me. You can learn more in my stabilizers playlist. But I am a strong guy who lifts weights so it really depends on the person. If you're not sure, get some books in a bag and hold it fairly close to you in front of your face. Depending on the camera it's around 1.5kg to 4kg total so try that with one hand and with two hands and see.

    Don't know about learning a glidecam anymore. Had gotten one at some point and then had just given up hope on myself. :P
    But now there's the new Pilotfly, the H2, so I'm hoping these gimbal stabilizers are finally at a point that they can do a really neat job (didn't have much confidence in 'em up to now).

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      +Shiznutsz Cool. Yeah glidecams take a lot of practice to get really good. Most often the issue is there's no one to give you tips when you're learning, and often the balance is completely wrong or people hold it wrong, etc.

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts 8 років тому

      +Nitsan Simantov yeah, and probably didn't help that I tried with a small/light and mostly cheap one from AliExpress (S-60 I believe). :P Thought of using the GH2 and 11-16mm Tokina with it, but I didn't really make it work in the end. Exited about DJI/Pilotfly/Beholder/Ministurdyflight to be really idiotproof. :P you have the Pilotfly H1, right? Hows that treating you? You prefer a traditional glidecam because you know how to fly it and turna out more organic?

    • @nitsan
      @nitsan  8 років тому

      +Shiznutsz
      Yeah the S60s are nasty. I had the s40, worst i've used, ever.
      And yeah most good gimbals don't need much learning or effort, just make sure to go with a lightweight one. The heavy ones are so not fun to hold.
      No I sold the H1+. Now I have the Birdycam Lite (not lite at all) and the Kovacam Digi.
      Yes, the mechanical one is more organic, but needs more attention to use it. The electronic ones do it all for you, but you need a really good one to get perfect results that look natural.
