The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, nicknamed “the Butcher of Tehran”, has just been killed in a helicopter crash.
How might the death of this hardline cleric at the top level of Iranian government change the face of the Middle East?
While many in Iran are apparently mourning his death, Raisi was a divisive figure, and was deeply unpopular with some Iranians. Raisi rose through the ranks of Iran’s judicial system. He became infamous for his leading role in a so called ‘death committee’ that oversaw the mass execution of Iranian political prisoners in 1988.
