I arrived at Da Nang on 4 July 69. I was based at Camp Tien Sha which was at the base of Monkey Mt. One day a group of us were in the back of a flat bed truck headed to Da Nang to take surplus fruits and veggies to a orphanage in town. At the time Da Nang was off limits but this allowed us access to the town. We were going by a Marine refueling location near the road. Some one on the truck yelled out , Hey look that chopper is on fire. It did exactly as Mr Phillips described. We could not access it, just watched it burn. We read in the Stars and Stripes a few days later it had ROKs on board. This has to be the same chopper.
I got back to Da Nang in 2017, was able to find my old base but it is a Vietnamese naval base now . Took a tour of Marble mt and went to China Beach.....many changes
