I think this is one of Cruise and Spielberg’s best. The twists, pacing, acting, plot…everything is top notch.

The most difficult part of deep mourning is the inability to communicate that depth to others. I believe THAT is what most imprisons people in their loss. It's what is responsible for parents breaking up after the death of a child; one parent (usually the mother) is trapped in that anguish while the other divorces himself from that pain. By one parent abandoning the other parent in that pain, it breaks their bond. If they hope to save their union, they must work through the grief together. The one grieving cannot escape or resolve any of it alone, at least not easily. The one avoiding pain cannot resolve the pain without submitting to it. The parents need each other if they hope to heal.

AI Artificial Intelligence is indeed a different movie. It was actually a Kubrick project that he never felt able to make as filmmaking technology hadn't reached a high enough level to meet his exacting needs so Stanley handed over all the preparation work that he and his team had done by 1995 and Spielberg released it in 2001 - it was his last project before this one.

The reason why some things were so bright was because it was us seeing things from agatha's perspective. You gotta remember she is spending her whole life in simple room with minimal lighting and no way for the eyes to better protect itself from sunlight. As a result, sunlight is a lot brighter so she can't handle the brightness. Another reason why they made things bright is to hide certain things. Rather than spend extra to create certain cgi add ins they instead just made certain spots brighter thus you can't see everything. It also adds to the sterile monotone color scheme as its so bright that colors are not perceptible as all you can see is white. Its only as you move into darkness that color becomes more visable. That is why some scenes show more color as the story gets more and more dark. This movie is important in other ways as its been used as a prediction of future technology. Facial recognition was not around yet when this movie was made. Its right up there with demolition man for best predictions of the future.

    • @sntxrrr
      @sntxrrr 2 роки тому +2

Just some minor points; there is no facial recognition in the movie, they use an advanced form of retinal scan which was already a commercial technology back in the 1980s. And demolition Man did not do a good job at predicting the future. There has been no restaurant wars and if anyone laughs at you for not understanding the three seashells it is only because that person is a huge movie nerd.

Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has worked on every Spielberg film since 1993's Schindler's List. On the one hand, their collaboration has resulted in some of the most creative shots in cinema history. But many fans definitely took notice of the less colorful look and heavy brightness of Spielberg's filmography since then. The easiest comparison is Indiana Jones 4 vs the previous three. I've always wondered how his films would've looked if Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049, Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall, Big Lebowski, 1917, etc...) was the Director of Photography instead.

The color grading was a creative choice that worked whether or not you happen to like it. The last scene zooming out from the precogs is the only scene with standard color grading. That was a choice. The idea of a society dominated by the corruption of a precrime department goes well with unfocused/desaturated color grading skewed to the cold side. When precrime goes away amd the precogs are free, we finally get to see a scene with realistic and warm lighting.

A very similar movie that definitely stands on it's own (and I personally like a bit more) is GATTACA. It also is stylized, deals with determinism vs free will (or arguably potential), and has some great actors with equally great performances. I believe the acting in GATTACA however is much more deep and emotionally stirring despite the fact that its presented as very sterile. _MR_ is not my favourite Spielberg film, but it might be his finest hour as a director. The level of visual invention and narrative control is unreal. One of the things I like most about the movie is how well it captures the spirit of old films noir without trying too hard to ape the style through costume, cinematography or music. The eccentric performances of the bit players (particularly Tim Blake Nelson, Lois Smith and Peter Stormare) are straight out of movies like _Touch of Evil_ or _Kiss of Death._

Suggest you look into "Ruby, the Galactic Gumshoe" produced as serial radio plays by ZBS. They're based on Philip K Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", developed almost as doppelganger to "Blade Runner". • @ILoveBees

      Word.
Dick was actually commissioned to write his own screenplay to Ubik, which I've read. I think it would work excellent, maybe even better as a movie, because you could use cinema techniques to portray time moving backwards:
It would start in 4k, then go back to 1080p, then to regular TV in 16:9, then to 4:3, then to B/W and finally to silent movie.

A.I., in my opinion, is one of the most underrated movies of all time. No, it's not entirely satisfactory, and it probably doesn't fully utilize the premise it lays out. But the world building is amazing. The fact that it's been practically forgotten about is the reason I consider it so underrated. In fact, you might be the first reactor I follow to react to it, if you choose to watch it. (Just please keep your expectations in check. And yeah I agree with you about everything including the "criticism." I love the movie, but the exposure and especially the crazy grain/noise always distracted and annoyed me, too. Fun fact: Spielberg used a thinktank of specialists (scientists, tech leaders etc.) to envision what the world would look like in 50 years time.
At the time the movie was made using retina scans for identification in the future made sense. The Human Genome Project (a worldwide effort to generate the first complete sequence of human DNA) was still ongoing after more than 10 years. Consequently, sci-fi didn't yet deal with it as a minor background aspect in their stories but rather as the major theme, often in the form of cloning or the consequences of 'designer babies', the movie Gattaca (which you already watched) being a great example.

Fifth Element isn't really near future though, but a great film. Gattaca is great too, and Children of Men is simply amazing. No wonder the guys behind it went on to do The Expanse.

Spielberg made Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can within a short time span. An incredible and creative one-two punch. I like a lot of the little details in the future world of Minority Report, for example, how some people fear the pre-cogs or see them almost as deities. This future world has its own flaws and superstitions. It is an example of creative world building.

To answer your question if there are any movies that Cruise doesn't run in. I can only think of a few. The color of money, Eyes wide shut, Tropic Thunder (of course it's a relatively small role) and I believe Top Gun.

This film definitely provokes the thought of whether the future has happened yet even if you could see into the future through some sort of looking glass.

Actually a great sci fi very well developed world if not one of the best in cinema, only issue I guess would be pacing in the 2nd act, and a bit bumpy in the climax. The set up and first act tho is pretty darn solid.

For me Minority Report is really like only one other movie Die Hard 3. The fact that when I first watched either film I remember not really liking them. Although with each successive viewing over the years I found my appreciation gradually increasing. Now I consider Minority Report and Die Hard 3 to be certainly near the top of my favorite films of all time.

Shan.. Re. Your intro question- Yes, A.I. is worth watching. In fact it’s wayyyy better than Minority Report. A.I. is a brilliant sci-fi / drama masterpiece. Watch it. You won’t regret that at all.

Hey Shan, Fun FAct: Spielberg brought in futurists to accurately predict what technologies would exist in the future so they could be placed in the movie. Many experts have said that this movie is the most accurate prediction of the future ever created. ------Shan, AI doesn't even need to scan our eyes to sell us, they can just track our cell phones. So we beat their predictions to the punch.

Watch the 2009 and 2013 Star Trek movies. They're pretty great. The Spock-Kirk dynamic was nailed perfectly and their performances are super engaging. Both films look super gorgeous too! Trust me, they're absolutely worth it.

You have to see DUEL, Steven Spielberg's first film, it is a master class on how to make your first film with a low budget, using a reduced film crew, 1 truck, 1 car, 1 leading actor and the rest supporting actors for one scene each one.

From Steven Spielberg, you must watch "Amistad". One of his best. From Tom Cruise, you must watch "Vanilla Sky", directed by Cameron Crowe. My favorite from Cruise.

Precrime actually did work quite well, by preventing murders. It wasn't perfect though, as we found out. The human factors of it made it vulnerable, and sometimes alternate futures were possible.
    Perhaps every time?
Just having an agent show up and have a 10 minute chat with the would-be murderer would likely solve a fair amount of cases. Sure, sometimes they'd still go back and kill their target, but the opportunity might have passed forever in some cases.

I also think the color grading and exposure were meant allow us to share John’s worldview, first desaturated and devoid of life to reflect the loss of his son, then overexposed when he is high or with his newly implanted eyes,

    Absolutely fire sci fi film.
Spielrg and Tome Cruise both do not disapoint.
Based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick, (as is the movie Blade Runner), it was at first intended to be a sequel to Total Recall (also based on a story by Dick).
The project went nowhere then Spielberg took the reign of it but stopped it to finish the movie AI (Artificial Intelligence) the Stanley Kubrick had start working on before he died.
After AI, he took Cruise, Colin Farell and Max Von Sydow (the legend) and without a doubt made one of the best sci-fi thriller of the 2000's.
The movie (like the story) asks tough question about determinism, free choice and should we act as if someone was guilty, if we know in advance what he will do?
    Deep questions indeed.
