    Love my Orpingtons ! We have 12 hens and a rooster as well, all about 4 & 1/2 months old now. Very sweet natured, not laying yet. And our rooster hasn't started to crow either. He is so greedy, not a gentleman at all. But the girls are so sweet ! I have one that gets in my lap every day for her cuddles. She tells me all about it too ! So sweet.

    A hawk ate one of my two Buff Orpingtings just a few days ago. One of my favorite breeds. I set out a fake owl. I've heard that it will keep the hawks away. We see!

      I'm a country boy, hawks use high ground to watch for prey.
      We would cut down a small tree (15 ft sappling),trim the limbs.
      Take a post hole digger and dig a hole deep enough to insert the tree and stabilize it. Place a trap on top of the tree,when the hawk lands on the tree ,he wll trigger the trap.

      I also raise Blue Slate turkeys... they make great Guard Birds, the hawks just sit in the trees not knowing what to with that big bird in the yard :) I keep an old blue slate hen in with the chickens!

      If not too much of trouble, string clear fishing lines about 12-15 lb test, set them about 8 feet from the ground about 12 inches apart. If a hawk dives and the wings snags on the line, he won't be back. Plastic owls are good for about week.

    Yup.. Buff Orpingtons are gorgeous birds. They are great foragers. The major problem I have with the Buff's that I have is they get broody at the drop of a hat. And when they are broody, they don't lay worth a darn. Other than that, they are great birds.

      I love em buffs! I've got 3. What are you using them for? Eggs? Meat? Both? Pets? Entertainment? Because the Buff Orpington's can be all of those things! I have mine for all of those things but meat. I love my babies 😇

      Eggs? Meat? Both? Pets?... I circle "both" Thanks for taking the time for the feed back Ruby's Zoo. We also here they are hardy. We live in zone 8 and have a maritime climate. Eventually we will have grand babies (I suppose) and I also hear they are pretty docile. We are etching ever closer to purchasing more land so we are taking our third acre and doing what we can at the moment. We have room for the chickens and a garden.

    Sad thing: i need to put my buff orpington (when she is an adult) with rode island reds. I saw in another vid that rir (Rode island reds) are more agressive breeds and should not be kept with buff orpintons. But my amaricuna chicks treat her like a sister and are inseparable. what now?

    I’m new to raising chickens. Do you clip their wings? I have a small flock. Only 4. 2 buff Orpington. 1 Ameraucana. And honestly. I don’t know what the other is. She’s a small bird. Beautiful. But she’s my escape artist. When she gets spooked she tries to fly out. We have bird netting over there run. But she finds a way out. She’ll hide until I come. And then she wants back in the run. Anyway. Yours don’t fly away? Mine stay in there large run or hen house. We have to many animals that will try and get at them.

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  4 роки тому

      If mine start getting out, YES... I will clip their wings.
      As they get older they don't get out as much, if you have a large area for them.
      Here's my video on clipping wings:ua-cam.com/video/fTwS7TRYpkc/v-deo.html
      But now I usually only clip ONE wing. It makes them feel unstable and they won't try to fly

    I grew up with what we called Game chickens.
    They were good brood hens,good layers, delicious to eat and feeding them was not a requirement unless penned
    Rooster were used for fighting.
    The hens defended their chicks to the death.

    • @BIGALTX

      The amount of eggs a chicken lays varies from breed to breed.
      Orpingtons will probably lay 200 - 250 brown eggs per year.

    Who says bantams has no place in the kitchen. I reviewed the Buff Orpington Bantam. They are docile. quiet and very productive of Pee Wee eggs They made good attractive pickled in jars. I dressed a cockerel yesterday, live was 1360 grams dressed was 980 grams ( 2pounds.) Made chicken -rice soup , Still d a real good flavor even with watered down soup.A 2 pound broiler, fried or roasted (Broiled) makes excellent dinner for 2. Tried poissins or chicks of full sized birds. Too soft , no flavor. Game hens are too bland.

      I'm north of Houston and I had problems with my buffs dying of heat stroke last summer. It was the first time I had buffs. My coop is very vented, I keep constant water, and they had abundant shade. How do you keep that from happening?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  8 років тому

      I didn't have the Buffs this summer. I just got them a couple of months ago.
      I have a "mister" on my coop that I turn on if I see them getting stressed. Also, they have a lot of shade.
      Most days, I'll go and run the water hose on the ground a few minutes to give them some puddles to scratch around in. That seems to help

    • @katiatomsk
      @katiatomsk 8 років тому

      I liked the buff's personality but I think, for me, they don't work. I don't have a mister so that might be a good idea for next summer. I have several varieties of chickens, Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Americana, Red Sexlink, Wyandotte, and Leghorns. The Sexlinks did the best this summer for me.
