Love my Orpingtons ! We have 12 hens and a rooster as well, all about 4 & 1/2 months old now. Very sweet natured, not laying yet. And our rooster hasn't started to crow either. He is so greedy, not a gentleman at all. But the girls are so sweet ! I have one that gets in my lap every day for her cuddles. She tells me all about it too ! So sweet.
A hawk ate one of my two Buff Orpingtings just a few days ago. One of my favorite breeds. I set out a fake owl. I've heard that it will keep the hawks away. We see!
I'm a country boy, hawks use high ground to watch for prey. We would cut down a small tree (15 ft sappling),trim the limbs. Take a post hole digger and dig a hole deep enough to insert the tree and stabilize it. Place a trap on top of the tree, when the hawk lands on the tree ,he wll trigger the trap.
I also raise Blue Slate turkeys... they make great Guard Birds, the hawks just sit in the trees not knowing what to with that big bird in the yard :) I keep an old blue slate hen in with the chickens!
If not too much of trouble, string clear fishing lines about 12-15 lb test, set them about 8 feet from the ground about 12 inches apart. If a hawk dives and the wings snags on the line, he won't be back. Plastic owls are good for about week.
Yea! I love my Buffs but also Speckled Sussex are also a great laying bird! I got about 20 of each plus 3 roasters and a little bantam roaster... he's a cutie :)
Them are some mighty fine chickens and Roosters for sure. It was smart getting the type of chicken that can lay eggs and also pot up and use as meat chickens. Duo purpose. Thanks for sharing your Buff Orpington Chickens. :)
I love buff orps, nicest birds you'll ever raise. They don't dress out huge but they make outstanding broth after laying for years. I also like Cuckoo Marans for their personality. thanks for the vid!
Yup.. Buff Orpingtons are gorgeous birds. They are great foragers. The major problem I have with the Buff's that I have is they get broody at the drop of a hat. And when they are broody, they don't lay worth a darn. Other than that, they are great birds.
My sister breeds and shows Orpingtons. She is all about fancy chickens. I think these are hatchery quality Orpingtons, but I maybe wrong they are still young.
Buff orpingtons are great chickens. Any way to prevent broodiness other than keeping your eggs collected often so they do not pile up in the nest? What hatchery do you usually get your chicks from? Have you had any other varieties of chickens?

Mr. Rain I love em buffs! I've got 3. What are you using them for? Eggs? Meat? Both? Pets? Entertainment? Because the Buff Orpington's can be all of those things! I have mine for all of those things but meat. I love my babies 😇
Eggs? Meat? Both? Pets?... I circle "both" Thanks for taking the time for the feed back Ruby's Zoo. We also here they are hardy. We live in zone 8 and have a maritime climate. Eventually we will have grand babies (I suppose) and I also hear they are pretty docile. We are etching ever closer to purchasing more land so we are taking our third acre and doing what we can at the moment. We have room for the chickens and a garden.
Sad thing: i need to put my buff orpington (when she is an adult) with rode island reds. I saw in another vid that rir (Rode island reds) are more agressive breeds and should not be kept with buff orpintons. But my amaricuna chicks treat her like a sister and are inseparable. what now?
You had road island red hens and sold them all and they could go on stew pot and you raised them? I love orpingtons but I wouldn't trade my laddies for a newer tribe. Well good luck to ya.
I’m new to raising chickens. Do you clip their wings? I have a small flock. Only 4. 2 buff Orpington. 1 Ameraucana. And honestly. I don’t know what the other is. She’s a small bird. Beautiful. But she’s my escape artist. When she gets spooked she tries to fly out. We have bird netting over there run. But she finds a way out. She’ll hide until I come. And then she wants back in the run. Anyway. Yours don’t fly away? Mine stay in there large run or hen house. We have to many animals that will try and get at them.
If mine start getting out, YES... I will clip their wings. As they get older they don't get out as much, if you have a large area for them. Here's my video on clipping wings:ua-cam.com/video/fTwS7TRYpkc/v-deo.html But now I usually only clip ONE wing. It makes them feel unstable and they won't try to fly
I got two of these I had 2 isa and two Rhode Island red buff orpingtons probably eat more and grow faster than anything I've seen they seem to doubling size compared to the other ones the Isis were the smallest I think they were probably going to lay it a medium egg I've had great luck with Rhode Island Reds in Golden comets they are laying machines with 330 nice big brown eggs yr it's all good
I grew up with what we called Game chickens. They were good brood hens, good layers, delicious to eat and feeding them was not a requirement unless penned Rooster were used for fighting. The hens defended their chicks to the death.

Sure. The hens are quiet and docile
The roosters crow quite a bit, but not too bad
How many eggs do you get from an american Orpington? I heard they lay much more than german Orpingtons(180 eggs a year)
