    I watch a lot of education chess content and twitch and UA-cam and I honestly think this some of the most informative content I've found. Alexandra is such a good teacher, not rushing to give you moves or stop you from blundering - just telling some of her ideas and giving blacks ideas and letting hutch and the audience try and work it out for themselves. I'd really love some more of these videos with hutch and botez. Great stuff.

    Hutch, I've commented on one of your old chess videos years ago saying this, but I want to remind you of how you sparked my love for chess. And also stoked to see you playing chess again and it looks like you're really enjoying it. Good luck in the next tournament and respect the bish.

      She's like 1800. I am a 1600 and I'd lose to her 9/10 times, I'd also beat hutch at least 8/10 times. 100 rating points is really huge in chess. I'd say that to be competitive it has to stay within a range of 50 points +/-

    I don't think Veela played poorly really. 1700 rated players make plenty of blunders/inaccuracies. It's just extremely helpful to have someone much higher rated force you to stop and think when she sees a tactic that Hutch wouldn't intuitively see. Sure he sees the tactics but only when warned they exist. Just like doing tactic puzzles endlessly. You get pretty good at them but in games, you're not going to do as well because the game doesn't tell you a puzzle is right in front of you. Most likely the 1700 player is playing more risky against someone 300 elo below them but doesn't realize someone ~2000 elo or near/above is coaching.

  • @jessearodriguez
    @jessearodriguez 4 роки тому +3

    Does WFM stand for Women's FIDE Master? Why is there a distinction for Women? I'm pretty sure the IQ distributions for men and women lie right on top of one another and that seems to be the most important factor determining chess ability so it seems overly patronizing. Men shouldn't have any inherent advantage, although they may be more heavily represented due to a higher probability for strong interest in things and games than women. Strange.

    • @Lemmy_Kilturtle
      @Lemmy_Kilturtle 4 роки тому +14

      It's purely for incentive. There are so little female chess players compared to men. Also there are no male only tournaments, there are only female tournaments or open tournaments. There are probably a bunch of factors why there are less women in chess. It looks like young girls have on average a higher rating than boys at the same age, but women quit and don't come back more than men do. Also, and I don't know how wide-spread it is, Alexandra talked about a general creepiness (and more) a female player has to deal with in mostly male dominated tournaments.

    • @petarpeychev1926
      @petarpeychev1926 4 роки тому +3

      I've read some things about spacial reasoning being a bit more imbalanced. Supposedly that's why mathematics and physics is similar due to the heavy focus on spacial ideas. But yeah, chess is overwhelmingly skewed towards men on the highest level. I think there is like 1 woman in the top 1000 players by ELO. Apparently also men are on average more interested in things over people and women the opposite so men gravitate towards the colder, inanimate pursuits like engineering, while women go for more empathic human-centric disciplines like medicine. And I'm sure the cultural history of chess being more of a male pursuit due to the war game-like nature is a factor.

    • @GEM4sta
      @GEM4sta 4 роки тому +1

      They say it's for incentive, I think it's probably more like CM. There is no downside to giving titles really, Fide gets more money and tournaments are more prestigious because you have more titled players, even if the players aren't actually masters

    • @otherwords1375
      @otherwords1375 4 роки тому +1

      @@petarpeychev1926 Chess involves very little spatial reasoning as it is psychometrically defined (where it is taken to refer to the holistic mental rotation and transformation of 3D and 2D shapes; when Kasparov famously took an IQ test, his visuo-spatial score was among his lower ones). It is rather about pattern recognition, logical reasoning, creativity, and memory. There are no observed sex gaps on these fronts. Lemmy's answer, about social factors and attrition rates of girls who play chess, is the more likely one.

    • @Epic501
      @Epic501 4 роки тому

      Men's and Women's IQ distributions do not overlap, only their mid points, women are more closely clustered around the mean, which means genial intellect males outnumber females ~3:1, adding to the fact that men seem to be far more interested in chess for whatever other genetic and/or cultural reasons, it makes sense.
