  • In this video we will take a look at the new audio setup I have built in my home office using the Adam Audio T5V studio monitors and my rather novel way of mounting them. I also used a Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD USB audio interface to connect them to my Caldigit TS3 Plus Thunerbolt 3 docking station.

    The INST button isn't for microphones, it's for guitars (and other other devices which require high impedance inputs). It only applies when using the 1/4inch jack inputs, which can also take a LINE level signal. Microphones should be plugged in via XLR, which bypasses the LINE/INST switch entirely.

    For the mounting, many of the Genelec models are already set up for VESA mounting, we've used that in some small control rooms. In your case, as long as the desk is solid enough that the speakers won't fall if you knock it, you're probably fine.

    Having the speakers up at ear level is actually a better position for them. If you ever see pictures or video from inside a recording studio control room you will see the monitors on top of the desk or on stands behind at the same height.

      No, not the tweeter. Actually it's the distance from the middle of the tweeter to the middle of the woofer divided by 2. that position should point directly to your ears.

    I heard a pair of these a while ago and was very impressed, really excellent for the money. If you have issues with vibration (I think I heard some rattling in the first track at the end) try Sorbothane hemispheres under each speaker. Make sure to use the appropriate hemispheres for the weight of the speakers so as to be within the optimal load. Sorbothane really does work wonders, better than most isolation devices.

    Cameron, you've entered the rabbit hole, one thing that I would suggest is looking at giving your room the audio treatment monitors like this deserve, at least put some bass traps in the corners (you can make these fairly simply), reflections from hard corners and hard walls completely negate the point in having good monitors. The cheap solution used to be egg boxes stuck to wall (this is often thought to stop the sound escaping and annoying your neighbours, which it doesn't, it's an attempt to deaden the room). Like I said, you've entered the rabbit hole and it's a long journey, have fun :)

    If you've not done so already, you'd really benefit from using the DB adjustments on the rear of each speaker to compensate for the acoustics of your room - and the fact that they are mounted close to the wall. The adjustments once done, will help here an even more accurate and balanced sound ;)

    A couple years ago, i bought some Bang & Olufsen RL6000 speakers from the early 90s for cheap on eBay. After repairing them, i wanted to mount them on a wall. I found original wall mounts on the internet for more than I paid for the speakers and replacement parts combined, each. After closer inspection of the 4 mounting holes, i realized they were exactly 100mm apart. 10 quid later i had 2 VESA 100 mounts and they still hang on the wall to this day.

    Yeah, I can't tell what they sound like because there are too many variables - speaker, zoom, youtube, then through my X32 to my HR828's. What I can tell is that the imaging seems good, and I didn't hear any nastiness. I wouldn't expect the bass response to be great at a bottom of 45Hz (and that's probably the -6db point, so it could be starting to roll off after 80Hz.) And that effect you noticed, where you start to hear things you never did before, that continues as you go up in monitor class too - My Mackie's sound super clear, and then my Genelec's still make me go wow occasionally. Welcome to pro-audio world! Now go make some super-accurate mixes!

    one thing to check is if the UMC202HD has balanced outs as the 204HD does not, and as such using balanced leads is not generally advised. As for audio quality of the UPHORIA line, there has been tests that have put the HD line against £1000 D/A's and the Behringer has come out on top.

    Hi Cameron from Italy. Interesting video. Very interesting your idea for side monitor support stand .
    Question: 1- what is the distance between wall and rear of monitor? Adam suggests about 40 cm or more , but I I see well you have 20 cm max, it’s right ? Gave you problem of bass boost or other sound issue ?
    Very intervening the listening point where you have put Zoom recorder. Definitively this is a normal listening point not a usual near field position for recording mixing . At what distance from monitor is Zoom recorder ?
    Thanks for your work

    Phantom Power: with most dynamic microphones you’ll be perfectly fine to pass phantom power through them. Some more delicate devices won’t like phantom power, but in general you’ll see it in the documentation.
    However... if you use a mini jack to XLR adapter you can do a lovely job of killing your laptop sound card! Can be particularly fun on digital sound desks when recalling a scene that includes phantom power settings

    Because these are studio monitors, you are meant to turn them on last after following the output path if you want to avoid the "pop". I live with the same inconvenience as I have a somewhat similar setup.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  5 років тому +2

      Yeah, it's a bit of a pain. I find that if I power everything up at once it's fine as the speakers do a "soft start" so they don't pop. Problem is that when I connect/disconnect my laptop from the docking station, it power cycles the USB ports which reboots the interface and causes it to pop. Half tempted to mod the USB cable (or get an external powered hub) so that it gets power from a permanent external supply rather than the dock.

I found that generally the cheaper/more basic ones were more likely to support it and the fancier ones were more likely to have a tilt limit.

    Hello Cameron, are you positive the outputs on the Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD are balanced? I could not find that in the official documention or elsewhere.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  3 роки тому +1

      From what I could find online they were apparently "impedance balanced" so not fully balanced although I just opened mine up and can see that the "cold" pin is simply connected directly to ground rather than through a resistor that you'd expect with something that's impedance balanced. Not sure if this will still provide at least some sort of interference reduction when connected to a balanced input or not as it's a bit beyond my level of knowledge. With that said, it works fine for my use but if you're doing something where balanced inputs are an absolute must, I'd probably get something with proper balanced outputs or use an external balancing box.

    Thank you for the review and the ideas.
    I just unboxed AdamT5V. When connected to the iPhone via dual xlr to 3.5 and then lightning to headphone jack converter they sound gorgeous. But, when I tried plugging 3.5 mm to the headphones output on MacBook pro or CaldigitTS3's headphone output I get the high-frequency hiss even without any sound source. The speakers play half the volume and the sound is quite disappointing. Do you think the audio interface (Behringer) will solve the problem? I think the hiss is interference from MacBook pro charging. Any ideas how to make it sound just as well as from the iPhone?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 роки тому

      While it may not be the cause of your problem, generally speaking I wouldn't recommend using the XLR inputs on unbalanced sources such as with your setup. XLR inputs are designed for a "balanced" audio signal which has two signal wires used to cancel our interference. From my understanding, if you send an unbalanced signal in (such as that from a 3.5mm jack), you will also get a reduced signal level. You'd likely be better off using a 3.5mm to RCA cables into the unbalanced inputs on the speakers. As for things like hissing, best thing to do is try with the laptop plugged in vs unplugged and see if this makes any difference. Also try without any external peripharels such as monitors as these could also introduce noise. An audio interface may help but you may be able to improve what you currently have without one.

Just make sure that the 1/4" end is actually a proper TRS stereo jack (two black stripes rather than one) to get a balanced signal, a lot of them use mono 1/4" jacks for unbalanced microphones/instruments.etc.

      They grip well enough so didn't stick them on although they’re not in a place that people will walk past, if they were in a location that people might be walking past, I'd probably go with something more secure. I definitely noticed slightly better sound quality vs my docking station but not sure how it compares to a Mac Mini's audio output. For a subwoofer, you'd probably want some sort of crossover to separate what goes to the speakers vs the sub, you could either get an external one, or use a sub such as the Adam T10S which has a built in crossover - you connect the sub to your source and then connect the output of the sub to your speakers.

      They're definitely a lot "brighter" than a lot of other speakers although not in a "tinny" way. I've had similar experiences with other "reference" equipment such as my DT770 headphones. The key thing I've spotted with these is how well defined and clear the highs are, they're' not bright in the sense that they lack bass that other models have, they're more bright in the sense that they have much more precision in the highs which is something that a lot of other models lack. (If that makes any sense at all, it's hard to describe sound!) It takes a bit of getting used to, especially after I'd been used to more consumer focussed equipment which focussed on have strong bass but now that I'm used to them, I genuinely miss the highs when listening to other equipment.

      It's not particularly convenient having to do that since the pops occur every time I dock/undock my laptop - it would be a complete pain having to turn both monitors on and off all the time. What I'll probably do is put a powered USB hub between the dock and Behringer interface, this will ensure that the interface will remain powered up constantly and won't power cycle when I dock/undock the laptop which will stop it popping. The interface will still produce a pop when I first turn on the mains power but it won't be an issue as the speakers do soft start so turning them both on at the same time as the interface will be okay.

    Speakers popped because you had them powered before connecting them to your computer. Common rule is to turn on your speakers and i/o devices /after/ you are set up following the order of your signal path (computer> audio i/o>speakers). Popping your speakers puts them at risk of blowing, and yanno, thats no bueno on a pair of £200 speakers.

    Does this caldigit 3 improve sound quality? I want to buy adams t5v and I need something like your behringer um202hd to connect monitors to my laptop, is it good idea or some dac will be better? Regards

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  3 роки тому +1

      The caldigit dock won't have any impact on the sound if you're using it with a USB audio interface, if you're referring to the audio output on the dock itself, it's fine but not nearly as good as a dedicated DAC/interface. As for a DAC vs an interface, the reason I went for the interface is because it has balanced output jacks which are ideal for the T5Vs and should be less prone to interference than having to use unbalanced RCA cables from a DAC. Probably not a huge difference though. The other difference would be if you want inputs as these are usually only on an interface. At its core, an interface IS a DAC in terms of its audio output so it's really down to the quality of the DAC in the interface compared to the DAC in a dedicated DAC.

      When I ran them directly from the interface I did have the gain on the back of each speaker increased slightly. I've since started using a small Behringer Q502USB mixer between the interface and the speakers as a way to quickly connect other devices which has a much more powerful output than the interface itself, so much so that I've had to drop the gain on each speaker to below 0db (they're now in the 12 o'clock position) to give me more range on the volume control.

      The output of my interface was fine although it's wasn't particularly powerful. However, I later added in a small 5 channel mixer (Behringer Q502USB) between the interface and the T5Vs to allow me to connect more devices and found that this gives a significantly louder output so something like this could potentially be an option. That said, turning up the gain on each speaker would be your first port of call unless it causes a noise issue.

    I have mine plugged in balanced to my audio interface but I wanted to also be able to use these as regular desktop monitors without my audio interface. I bought 2 rca cables and then plugged them into a Y cable with the other end being a traditional 3.5mm jack to go into my computer. There is a significant amount of noise, not sure if it's the cables or it's because they are unbalanced. I also noticed that the RCA cable does not go all the way into the RCA jack like on other products I've had. Any suggestions?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  3 роки тому +1

      I'd try a different cable and see if it's that although being unbalanced will make it more prone to interference, even moreso if this is a long cable which I presume it will be to go to both speakers. I'd also try a different device on the 3.5mm end, ideally one that's running on battery power to eliminate it being any sort of ground loop issue. I've previously encountered a ground loop issue when connecting a Pioneer DJ controller to the speakers over RCA cables when my laptop is powered through my docking station. I've used an RCA cable without such issue so it's not a blanket issue with the T5V's RCA jacks at least. I ended up putting a cheap 5 channel mixer in between my interface and the speakers - means I can keep everything connected with balanced connections and can easy connect inputs to this mixer and adjust levels.

    • @camerongray1515

      Suppose depends on what you are doing, the mixer has the benefit of allowing you to combine multiple sources.etc but if you want to use the USB on the mixer as an input you'd need to be aware that it will record any sound passing through the mixer, this includes audio that you are playing from your computer so if you were to try and record a microphone while playing music, the recording would contain both the microphone and the music. On the other hand the interface has totally independent inputs and outputs. Personally I use both, I have the interface to connect everything with my computer over USB then feed that into a mixer to allow me to add in other sources and then connect the output of the mixer into the speakers.

      It does but I'd rather not have to worry about that - I have everything connected to a docking station and want to be able to just plug that into my laptop and have it work without having to switch various things on and off every time. What I think I'll look into is seeing if I can power the interface from an external power supply rather than the dock using a modded USB cable. That way the interface will power up at the same time as the speakers (rather than when I dock the laptop) and therefore won't pop due to the soft start of the speaker's amps.
