David Hodgson gives a brilliant interview on UA-cam recently where he talks about this game. He was told by the coach to get Hughes sent off. Hodgson is a brilliant character. Really enjoyable interview.
Although a Liverpool fan - 1984/85 is my favourite season for the football. Even though we won nothing and ended with the shame of Brussels. Man Utd, Everton, Spurs all had exciting teams and our struggles made the league more exciting. Every team had personalities and away games had an edge to them .
I was at this game with my little brother. We're both Newcastle fans, but went along just to see the match, and stood in the Fullwell End. Still one of the best games I've ever been at.
I remember that game well, certainly the first period! 0-2 down after about fifteen minutes, but a spectacular comeback to lead 3-2 by the break, thanks to Clive Walker's hat-trick. Things looked really promising for us at that stage of the 84-85 campaign, for we were comfortably placed in Div. 1, and relegation battles looked as if they might at last be a thing of the past, while a promising MC run was also taking shape. But then sadly, it all went pear-shaped, culminating in the double disaster of MC Final defeat, and relegation. Guess it could only happen to us!
Was at that game was fantastic atmosphere! Always was against the mancs Clive walker had a game he'd niva 4get ! Mind we deserved the win although yad niva hear that from any Man U hanger on or even the management!!!
So... the Wearsiders moved across the field when they moved to the SoL, just like Arsenal did when they changed stadia (the SoL and the Emirates' dugouts are on the near side of the pitch relative to the TV cameras, unlike Roker Pk. and Highbury)...
2-0 up, 3-2 down. This game pretty much sums up the misery of the 80s for Utd in the league. We'd take points off Liverpool and most of the other top teams and then undo all the good work against teams lower down the table. Sunderland were relegated this season but took 4 points out of 6 in the two matches against us (2-2 at OT).
Mi Ke I remember this. I was 7 at the time and although I supported united from 1982 the 84/85 season was the first season I was able to follow properly with interest. This 3-2 loss from a winning position was a big blow. I seem to remember us also blowing a 2-0 lead against Notts forest to lose 3-2 around same time. It felt like United always finished 4th in the middle part of the 80s!
Fantastic play and quality. Unfortunately, play was broken by unfair play and red cars. But an splendid footbal nevertheless...Greetings from Barcelona.
When Walker scored the 1st it was me and my mates celebrating in the Man U Section, within seconds the Police came in and roughly manhandled us out of the ground!!!!!
Hodgson was the main aggressor there and deserved to go. Hughes would commit, on average, twenty fouls per match but was never a dirty player who would raise an elbow toward an opponent.

You don't get atmospheres like that at British football grounds now. Such a shame.

6:34 "Bit of arrogance there." I always felt Barry Davies was less than enthusiastic about Sunderland when he commentated on their matches.
What a game
Clive Walker having the season of his life. Well it would have been if he'd scored his penalty in the Milk cup final.

Ffs. How can you justify two fuckin adds for a vid so short...why dont you have one during a standing ovation altogether....
Hughes deserved to be sent off for his snake like play acting to try and get Hodgson sent off

Bent ref as usual
