Bullets vs Propeller in Slow Motion - The Slow Mo Guys
Filmed with the Phantom v2511 between 28,500fps and 120,000fps
And the Phantom Flex 4K at 1000fps
Can you do a slomo of two guns pointed at each other (or at a slight angle) and watch in slomo the two bullets colliding to each other?
Candi Soda whose gonna pull the trigger two people wouldnt do that its two risky
and the angle to get the bullets to collide would be way to difficult to find as well
marcus james not impossible tho, and a person isn't required to fire a gun
Laser sights and remote triggers have existed for quite a long time. That's generally how companies will test firearms before releasing them for public use.
Altai how would it fire
Now bullets vs bulletproof glass
Tuned Gaming that actually sounds interesting, seeing how the glass would warp or move, and how much material would spiderweb.
better, bullets through one way bulletproof glass
Great idea! :-)

4:17 I would not be standing in front of that gun at any time loaded or not.
Even if it’s not loaded I’d still be scared to go anywhere near to the front of that thing
Exactly
Is he? He's standing on the far side of the propeller while it's more or less straight up and down and the gun should be centered on the propeller. His left elbow is against the far side of the fuselage. If his head is in front of the gun, that would mean his right elbow must be straight in front of Dan relative to the engine which doesn't seem to be supported by the rest of his positioning. I won't deny that it looks like his head is lined up with the gun but I think that's a perception issue....
Why? It would be interesting to stare straight through to the barrel of an m16

Because the ak-47 is an overrated weapon =P. Actually though a bullet striking bullet proof glass would be interesting, it wouldn't be as extreme as normal glass shattering, but the ripples and cracks would be cool to see

This was great guys. I've always wondered how this worked. Thank you
I have an idea; drop a fire ball under water and watch it extinguish.
I really can't stand watching Gavin put his face right in front of the gun, I assume it is never ready to fire when he does but good lord you have the entire desert to stand on and yet you choose the one and only place where you can get shot by your own contraption - remember everyone no matter how sure you are the gun is empty never aim at anything you do not want shot (or in this case do not place your head directly in front of the gun ^^')
Well I've got great news for you then! Not once did he put this head in front of the gun. Not sure what video you were watching... Or maybe you were fooled by the angle everytime he was on the opposite side. But either way, and from the 7 minutes of footage that was published here, he never had his head in front of the gun. CLOSE to it maybe but NOT in front.

@@eh-9994 a plane is an aircraft, as you probably know. A plane is math is something unrelated, and in photography there's something called 'plane of focus' which I recommend you look up (it's hard for me to explain).

You could custom order a propeller that has no angling. It wouldn't be able to produce thrust, regardless of RPM.
I was just thinking the same thing then read your message. It would have made a better video if the prop was moving at full speed. You just need a blade the that cut's through the air but produces no thrust
@@deancyrus1 It would not have made a better video. Both of you seem to forget that the results would be the same at full speed.
200rpm vs 1200rpm the bullet is still trucking on through the prop like it was stationary.
It's not like the prop is going to knock the bullet off course or deviate it in any significant way.
Like Gav said, they're dealing with "orders of magnitude" so therefore you'd need 20,000rpm to even start to make a difference.
_Bullet through jet engine perhaps??_
@@beefcakeandgravy I think the implication if having the propellor rotate faster is that more bullets would have hit it.
@@beefcakeandgravy Thing of it is, if the prop was spinning faster, there would be more stress on the blade, potentially resulting in some more explosive strikes when the bullets hit.
"What do you like about the first world war, the great war?" -Every brit starts frothing at the mouth.
I like how all the bullets went through the same propeller.
The French just put something to ricochet the bullet the German made a interrupter gear box

ok
Swite would have been pretty unstable and probably dangerous. They had professionals build that and setup
it was slower than it usually would be before the slo motion so they could film it otherwise it would be to fast.
Did you even watch the video till the end when they explain why it couldn't go faster?

Have they done a jet exhaust in slow motion, specifically when it starts heating up and blowing out 'flames'? Preferably a military jet. That would be pretty interesting.
The Afterburner is what I am hinting to

Would probably be to dangerous if the camera can't zoom enough

the_magic_y_ tho_boy but after a while they did the sync thing
Meh
The part that says (inaudible) is actually him saying "in real life"
Brandon Clifton was looking for this comment
Brandon Clifton no shit
where is that part at
Before the sync gear was perfected WWI fighters did just fire through the propellers unsynced. You can tell in old photos which ones were doing this because of the metal deflector plates placed in the pertinent areas of the propellers. Even after syncing was introduced the leading edge in the vulnerable areas were sometimes covered so a higher rate of fire and increased margin for error could be achieved without a catastrophic inflight failure.
How about exposing those who claim to catch bullets in their teeth.
SnoopyDoo Mythbusters already did mate. Great episode.
SnoopyDoo its pretty common sense that you can catch a bullet with your teeth.
When 'air power' was coming into it's own during the "Great War" (great as in large or wide spread, not great as in nifty or cool), machine-guns where mounted on airplane fuselages. This was before synchronizers were developed. To save the propellers, one idea was to mount hardened steel plates on the back of the propellers in the area where the bullets struck. This sort of worked, but the plates and props still had a rather finite usage span. Also, the bullets tended to spatter on impact with the steel. I don't recall anyone or any aircraft seriously damaged, but the pilots were - uh - distracted.
6:25 I feel like you could have had it going faster than 200 rpm though. Maybe not 1200 but 400 or 600? Or you could maybe get a propeller that doesn't create much thrust at all and have going at 1,000 rpm? *Shrugs*. I don't know, I do wish it had been spinning faster though if it were possible in some way.
I mean a 2x4 wouldve worked. but a prop that doesnt produce as much thrust just makes it redundant to being a prop dontcha think? XD
I see what you did there
Thanks for the video guys! I had just done a bunch of research on the different syncro devices used during WWI. It was quite interesting, as you guys just briefly touched on it, the airplane engine is constantly changing speeds which the synchronization mechanism had to take into account.
Loved seeing the Vickers machine gun! Great job as always!👍
The propellers rotate way faster on plans so this experiment doesn't show the exact result
With the interruptor gear, rpm doesn't matter. You get the same result regardless.
Wasn’t the airplane only used in WWII?
No the were invented in 1903 and quickly went into military service. They were used widely in ww1
so basically is works because it works? Neat.

Do the liquid nitrogen and coke thing that the crazy Russian hacker did
“Where here in the Nevada desert, NOTHING HERE”
Me: ALIENS
Even the synchronized interrupter gear wasn't foolproof because ammunition in that era was sometimes unreliable. Both primers and propellants in bullets might hang fire fire for a split second causing the round to emerge behind schedule and still hit the propeller.
Is there any specific reason the bullet is fired right before the propeller blade comes across? Is the air current the most stable at that time, or is it pure coincidence? Anyone know?
Normally with the sync gear it would still be fired full auto, just automatically pause when the bullet would hit the propellor. So some would be close some would be far away, the single shot wasn't that effective at showing the power of the sync gear.
@@megamert2848 Wrong, that's interrupter. Synchronisers typically try to fire gun once per prop rotation (if the gun is ready and trigger is pressed).
Man, that slow rpm of the prop made this video only live up to 10% of its potential. :/
There's a version of this that fires 11mm incendiary bullets for shooting down observation balloons. Would be cool to see this again with this !

You say "Is it just me?" but it's mentioned in the video. We ALL saw it.
relax guys
so the propeller is not moving at the real speed, so that makes the vid useless :( they could fix it on the ground and do it with real speed what a shit man.
In the video it's moving at 200 rounds per minute, the WW1 plane rotor spinned at supposedly (Dan quote) 1200 rpm - vibration at that speed would've not been good for a clear shot.

Wait wait wait

I think it would have been even more impressive if that prop was running at flight type RPMs. It would have been in more motion as the bullet flew past the edge. But then again your rig would probably be inching forward along the desert floor so...
Timing is everything.
lmao yeah... just stand casually in front of the machine gun's barrel.
It wasn't being used
Trevor Soundas he was in the general direction but not quite in front of it you idiot.
Well considering Dan is a military Vet I'm confident he insured the weapon was cleared and safe.
The chances not hitting the propeller in the first place is slim, but putting a bullet through a previous hole is near impossible but wow you did it
Superb, guys. Impressed you built an interruptor. I thought they were set to fire when the blade was directly in front of the muzzle.
The best part is how timely gun is connected to propellor so that it won't hit it other than that just firing
May I ask if you guys have several different high-speed cameras? Also, I don't like to self-promote, but I have a slow-motion video of me slapping my face at 240 fps @QVGA, which is the fastest recording my camera can do. The reason why I'm saying this is because I was wondering if that recording speed is fast enough to record the shock wave of an M-80 firecracker exploding. If not, would it be fast enough to record the expansion of the explosion? I don't want to waste a firecracker to find out it's not fast enough. You guys have dealt with these types of speeds and explosions long enough to give me info.
A standard firecracker costs what? 1 cent? Get a string of those to test.
That depends where you live. Here in Australia they are very hard to get for most people. I have one left from the 1970's that I'm very reluctant to set off...
Ahh, then roll your own using some match-head scrapings or make a small amount of acetone peroxide...
Actually, I prefer to soak cellulose in a saturated sodium chlorate solution then dry it (carefully) ... good enough for fire works and just a touch more stable than acetone perfingersgone
I'd say don't waste it yet, just saw your video and it didn't look like that speed would capture much. I did a water one at 400fps and it still doesn't look anywhere near slow enough to capture an explosion. Edit: Very rough calculation and I may have got it entirely wrong, but possibly at 240fps, the shockwave would be moving over 1.5m per frame, so the camera wouldn't really see anything
The Germans managed to get synchronisation gears up and running first during WWI and were horrified upon capturing a downed British plane to find that though the British engineers hadn't perfected the technology yet that they'd gone ahead and fitted steel plates to the propeller of the aircraft so that any rounds that did hit would be "hopefully" deflected by the angle and movement of the propeller as it turned rather than turning it into matchwood. Even back then, engineering was paramount to their Teutonic ways.
Thing is, before WW1 the french had the idea of putting the mgs infront of the pilot, so he could aim better. But they faced the problem that the bulltes would go straight through the propeller so they put metal covers on it. At the same time a german engineer was working on a solution to the same problem, but the german mg he used was to powerful. it just penetrated the metal shields so he had to synchronize the triggersystem with the propeller.
I just happened to watch this video while I was visiting Las Vegas
They said there was no one, I saw a car drive by.
Awesome vid. Btw Gav, just saw your movies, I thought they were really awesome! Big fan. I'd love to see you do more acting. Your American recheck accent is brilliant😂😂
They actually didn't shoot through but they had a mechanism that stopped the gun from firing when one of the wings of the propeller was in front of the barrel of the gun
I feel like Gav asking the question; "what do you like about the first world war?" should have been worded differently. Lol maybe "What do you find intriguing about..."
Everyday is a school day, great video
Even if it hit the propeller in real life, you can still survive thanks to the aerodynamics of the plane.
To cause real problems, the bullet have to hit the side of the blade, distrupting air flow and causing drag.
So there won't be a real danger if a bullet or 2 went through
As long as the shape of the blade doesn't cause too much drag or instability, you are good!!
Gav's funniest face at 4:48!
Funny thing, before they had sync gears, the propellers were metal plated cuz the bullets didn’t stop

this is a cool mech that allows you to shoot through your props with out hitting them almost right away
What would have been more fun is a slow mo of a spirfire machine gun shooting through the gap of its propellers
Fred Flintstones- That got me better than I would of thought it would, you amazing people-
The Romanian George Constantinescu's hydraulic machine gun synchronization gear allowed airplane-mounted guns to shoot between the spinning blades of the propeller. The Constantinesco synchronization gear (or "CC" gear) was first used operationally on the D.H.4s of No. 55 squadron R.F.C. from March 1917, during World War I, and rapidly became standard equipment, replacing a variety of mechanical gears.
There was a metal cam on the crank shaft of the prop and when the prop was in line with the gun it would not fire
had an idea..thanx for sorting out my big confusion
1:04 imagine being that dude driving by lmao
Tracers on the bullet would have been a nice final touch
At the speed the propeller on the actual planes would be (which is way faster), a bullet was more likely to rip the propeller blade off, rather than make a hole.
I like how they ran for cover around a hill side. Like they could get some plexi and build a lil wall so they could see it. Instead run in fear
Thanks, now i can sleep peacefully
