I'm so happy those minitels are now in good hands and it's always a pleasure to visit the museum! Btw if anyone has any question about this french oddity, do not hesitate to ask questions by replying to this comment :)

In germany we had something pretty similar. It was called BTX which stands for Bildschirm Text which means sth. like "Text Screen". In DE it was operated by the Deutsche Telekom, the public telephone provider just like it was done in France by France Telekom. AFAIK Minitel was rather common in FR, but BTX was never widely accepted in DE and was shut down in 2001.

@@VolkerKtnbch indeed the Minitel was very popular especially in the mid to late 90's, my grandma was still using it in 2009 to do her banking on it, and it was shut down no earlier than 2012!

I asked Sam several months ago if he was planning on doing a video about Minitel, glad to see it happened thanks to you!

Hi fellow Francilien ! You mentioned you wanted to get the Minitels working through the phone lines... I was wondering if you already have a Proof of Concept going ? I'm asking because that's something I'd eventually like to try as I sadly never got to experience it properly.

@@MarimeGui hey! I think I got the server-side modem working but right now I don’t have a phone line simulator to properly test it

Minitel was a success in France for a few reasons: 1. The terminals were free from France Telecom - instead of having printed telephone directories. 2. Information providers just had to connect via an X25 network and could get paid per view. Access has short 4 digit phone numbers (3615…3618) which had different rates. 3. There was (text-based) porn - the key to all internet growth stories!

This was such a success in France that French releases of Microsoft Windows 95/98 all included a minitel emulator (Hyperterminal) so that you could use the service on your PC

All versions of MS Windows 95 to Windows 7 included Hyperterminal, not just the French releases

Minitel was also used in the Netherlands the spar supermarket I use to work in the 90's had a ordering system based on it. the manager would go thou the shelves look for products that tend to go out of stock scan the barcode with a hand held scanner. After he did his round hook up de scanner to the minitel and up load the order in a view minuts.

I used to use Prestel and Micronet 800, which were viewdata services in the UK. 1200bps down and 75 bps up. It was a bit like teletext, but interactive.

I was born in 1988 and I can still remember all the ads on TV or in the streets for Minitel services. While the ones on TV were pretty serious, those on the streets were advertising Minitel rose services.

Prestel, as it was called here, failed because they made the users purchase the terminals instead of giving them away for free and simply making money off the calls (as in France). Other countries in the European mainland tried it the same way as BT, rather than copying the French model, so France is basically the only place it became a cultural phenomenon.

Funnily enough i was thinking the other day, if you had a small server at the museum that would accept 56k modem comms via the exchange, the server could hst a simple website with basic info about the museum
Now this could be done to include those terminals ;)

Germany had something like that too, called BTX. That was back when telephone services in most European countries were still state monopolies. They thought they could defeat international trends and monopolize the internet inside their countries. Hence these crazy terminals. History taught them better. Fun fact: the t-online website is the last remainder of what was once German BTX.

France Telecom gave these terminals to subscribers instead of printed phone books. It was very successful as subscribers used other paid for services. In the UK British Telecom had the Prestel service but it did not catch on with the general public, only early adopter geeks like me.1200/75 dial up modern stuff. Interestingly the French terminals were totally non standard, I brought one to the UK thinking I could use it for Prestel but no joy. 1990 or thereabouts.
