To be fair it's not really common to write it as arigatou right? Since it's usually like arigatō, I've seen Japanese people write "arigato"
arigato is a casual way of saying arigatou, same with sumimasen -> suimasen
The U/う there represents the lengthening of the final o sound, which should be written down given the rules of the language. While a shortened form without it is listed in some dictionaries I get the vibe it's particularly colloquial/informal so you probably shouldn't shorten it when pairing it with gozaimasu.

The bar syntax and “ou” syntax are different ways of doing Romaji (phonetic western Japanese spelling) so it depends who you ask. The bar or the u would be needed though in this case

In Connor’s defense, ありがとdoesn’t use the う, so its kind of understandable.
It’s like if someone uses ‘thanks’ a lot it’s not inconceivable they’ll use ‘thanks you’.
It’s our language, however we say and spell something is the way it’s said and spelled 😂😛. Americans would go way harder on that point if it was somehow their language we shared

No, 「とう」 is always pronounced as _two_ moras, it's just that 「う」 is pronounced as 「お」 in the second mora. But Japanese people will "enunciate"/separate「う」 sound when spelling (or singing by mora) just like「っ」 or 「ん」.

@@kumumblenumdnler4356 What I said applies to 「ありがとうございます」, too. If a Japanese enunciated that word by mora (i.e. spelling or often singing), they wouldn't omit the 「う」 mora even if difference between moras is shortened in casual speech. They still know how many moras there are in the word.
@@mayorjoshua yeah you’re missing the point though. Cdawg misses the spelling, but anyone who speaks more than writes is going to go with what’s spoken, and in this case no one really says the とう in ありがとう with 2 mora
