Back in 1985, professional wrestling was far from the billion dollar entertainment business that we see today. At the time many fans were still unsure whether wrestling was real or pre-determined. 20/20 reporter John Stossel was doing an in-depth news story on Vince McMahon, the WWF & the truth behind what really happens in pro wrestling.
In what is now the most infamous clips of John Stossel's career, he told WWF star "Dr. D" David Schultz that he thought "wrestling is fake". It was at this moments that Schultz slaps Stossel across the face proclaiming, "yeah is that fake? That's an open hand slap!".
The slap was met by praise from wrestlers in the locker room but it turned into a nightmare for WWF owner Vince McMahon. The promotion would be sued by Stossel and 20/20, leaving McMahon to pay out more than half a million dollars.
Dr. D David Schultz claims that Vince McMahon told him to take care of John Stossel. McMahon denies these claims. Schultz also talks at length about how Vince McMahon treated him after the incident, also what his reaction was to fellow wrestler Eddie Mansfield who was also in the 20/20 segment. Mansfield demonstrated how to do a blade job on the program, further exposing the professional wrestling business.

It was probably a work between Schult and Stossel. Schultz got out of his contract, and he got publicity for being a badass; while Stossel gets publicity for breaking the wrestling scam, and $400,000 in lawsuit money.
If it was real, Stossel could call the cops and Schultz would do years in prison.

Well, there's a fine line. When a story stays the same then yes, they're probably telling the truth. However, when a story stays the same word for word, like a script, it should raise alarm bells. But Dr. D's story doesn't sound that way, just sounds honest.

John Stossel is an arrogant prick. I'm glad David Schultz smacked him around!
Sounds like Vince had his mind made up before Dr. D hit Stossel. He wanted him to do something stupid so he could fire him and promote Hogan.

Vince: "There's a guy here trying to make a joke out of the business pal"
Wrestling fans: "No Vince, you did that"
In Stossel's defense Vince is a well known bull shitter.
Curious thing. In English vernacular, we say "bull-shitter," and in Spanish we call it shit-eater ("come mierda," pronounced "KOH-meh mee-ER-dah"). Vince does both.
Vince is an evil person, period. He has a long history of using people and abandoning them... his loyalty is only to himself. There are hundreds of former wrestlers that performed with injuries, even aggravating old injuries, and Vince KNEW this and abandoned them first chance he got. He's used his influence to keep talented wrestlers from wrestling for other companies, too; he deliberately went after those that didn't bow to him and destroyed their careers. His wife is no better.

Dr. D. got fired for roughing up John Stossel, but Hulk Hogan faced virtually no sanctions for putting a sleeper hold on Richard Belzer, who fell and busted his head on a hard tile floor. That's pro wrestling politics for you. The "golden goose" of the company doesn't get so much as a "slap on the wrist", while a real-life "tough guy" gets tossed out like a dirty diaper.
Actually, D was NOT fired because of that incident. He was fired because of an incident with Mr. T.
@@maraviyoso8473 Please explain. Mr. T had serious diva issues when he was with WWF, I'd like to hear more.

@@SovereignStatesman*, he was a great wtestling heel, which means he played the part he was given. I didn't say anything about him being the greatest wrestler or in-ring performer.*
I feel like the reason wrestlers get offended is because when you call their profession fake and they think about the injuries they have had, their friends have had, the deaths, the pain getting out of bed, the countless hours on the road. And you just called it fake. The storylines are for the most part laid out beforehand of course, but the physicality is real, they aren't landing on a bed of marshmallows.
Also, No interviewer ever goes up to an actor in a movie and tells them it's fake in a way that is derogatory.
@Skafut Nickfutnick See you're doing it also, you're disrespectful. Joe Rogan who you probably know from Ufc himself called pro wrestling one of the hardest careers ever.
Amen
@Skafut Nickfutnick I never said that the dude was right about hitting him in the face. I certainly wouldn't do that. I just was stating why some wrestlers take it seriously. But where I feel Stossel was in the wrong is when he justs states that wrestling is fake. It is very derogatory. An interviewer would never go up to an actor and state that their movie is fake. Of course, it is an act, it is a performance. Wrestling is basically an extremely phsyical form of theater. If I was a wrestler, would I have slapped someone for telling me it was fake? No. Would I have been a little ticked off, well yeah because it is a very rude way to confront someone's profession, whether Stossel intended that, or not.
Furthest thing from fake get in the ring and train you won’t last 10 minutes without crying and whining!
@Skafut Nickfutnick Sure, CM Punk went and got his shit kicked in. But you know who didn't? Antonio Inoki, Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, Brock Lesner, Alberto Del Rio, Bobby Lashley, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kazushi Sakuraba, Masakatsu Funaki, Kazuyuki Fujita, hell even Jack fucking Swagger. All of the people I mentioned did years in wrestling, many of which are big names in wrestling... They also did well in MMA. If you're gonna talk shit about people in a "sissy sport" who try and do mma... Try and show you actually know what the fuck you're talking about. More wrestlers have been successful in mma, than not successful. (At least those that actually tried... CM Punk is just a bitch.)

I was 7 when I first caught WWF in 1985. I had faint memories of Dr. D. He was one of the first heels I was drawn to. As a kid I never knew why all of a sudden I never saw him again.
Dr d was one of my favorites back in the day, didn't see him wrestle again until around 1988 when he was shown on international wrestling based in montréal, canada.
Dr. D was a absolute legend for backing pro-wrestling like he did, I remember seeing him after the matches at Stampede wrestling in Calgary you talk about intimidating no kid would go up to him for a autograph, he was and is the man.
The role wrestlers play before audiences is often the role wrestlers play 24/7, keeping it real. Dr D, just like Ernie Ladd and other "villains," HAD to do to give some semblance of credibility for avid or fanatical wrestling fans. Boxers do that today, trash-talking to promote the fight and sell tickets at the gate and boost numbers of pay-per-view customers. And, yes, wrestlers DO get hurt while performing... just like movie stent men/women also often have accidents and get hurt/injured.

John Stossel deserves a lot more than a slap across his lying face. He’s always been a punk and he’s always been a liar. David Schultz is a hero.
Nah, he had the slaps coming.
Don’t provoke people unless you can deal with the consequences. Stossel wanted a reaction, and he got one. The notoriety of it was good for his career. He was a “beach” for crying about it and suing, instead of being a man and owning up to provoking him. Stossel claimed it caused him hearing issues for a long time, but as I recall also admitted exaggerating about it.
That being said, if it truly was preplanned by McMahon, then it was entirely appropriate to sue McMahon.
Back then they pretended wrestling was real.
I grew up watching wrestling way back in the "dark ages" of the 1970's in Vancouver BC. Gene Kiniski (Canada's Greatest Athlete), Don Leo Jonathon, The Brute and a host of others entertained a couple of 14 year old kids and hundreds of others, every Monday night at the PNE Gardens Arena. We also went to the TV tapings out in Burnaby a few times.
As a born-and-raised Vancouverite, I grew up with All-Star Wrestling with host and announcer Ron Morrier - one of the best wrestling announcers and interviewers ever. I remember Gene Kiniski("I want to thank my fellow Canadians AND AS USUAL, _____ , you did a great job). The Brute, Siegfried Steinke(🖐The Claw), Mr. X/Guy Mitchell, Dutch Savage, Erich Froelich, Roddy Piper & Playboy Buddy Rose. Watched it almost every Saturday on Victoria's CHEK-TV in the morning and repeated in the afternoon on BCTV(Vancouver's old CTV affiliate).
