- I had this super fun idea of playing tape loops as a stylophone. So I made it. Very fast and easy diy that potentially is smart maybe idk.

Love this and the pause stylus button - very clever!
That’s brilliant! Two of my favorite esoteric instruments in one. Thinking of tape loops, you could add an Echoplex to the mix and create an Echo-mello-stylo-walk-plex-tron-phone-man! Also missing theremin. It’s 2022 and there should be theremins everywhere by now.
The drums are really my type. cool, crazy, noisy. great little build
the start and stop thing is a cool effect of course, but maybe if it was continuously running and the stylus was completing the speaker circuit would be cool too. maybe it could be optional with a 3 way switch.
9:00 dope theremin!
Sounds like someone chugged a few espressos and started playing a theremin hahaha. Very fun idea!
You should make a circuit bending course. I’d buy the crap out of your circuit bending course.
I literally just bought one and was looking got a 4 track cassette recorder yesterday. This is fate. Big fan of everything you do!
Classic 🧰🤌
If you don't mind me asking what types of gear do you rock? I only ask because I just started using the sampler app "KOALA" it is really user friendly and I can't stop using it. Any way I can imagine it would be a great addition to your 4trak and or a minimal set up. What ever you do rock, keep Rocking! And having fun is key as Magpie shows us!👊✌️
@@WE.ARE138 Koala sampler is great. I managed to make a whole tune on it.
Got a little frustrating at mastering stage being all touch screen, but bang for buck it's an incredible app!
Always inspirational and entertaining to watch your videos. I bet Hainbach is kicking himself that he didn't think of it!
The music you randomly come up with always amazes me? Not to mention the freaky instruments that you somehow make sound killer?!?
The tune at 3:20 is amazing !
11:58 reminds me of Bowie's Ashes to Ashes
You're very creative. Never stop
It's like a if stylophone and Mellotron had a baby. Stylotron? Really cool consept and I like the use of 3D printed parts to make look as a finished thing.
Also, let me guess, that tape cutting on 2:27 is one of your intentional comment baits, isn't it? Like, I remember you talking about baits on podcast, but I'm still a bit triggered, lol.
If you get a kiddie keyboard and put a button on each key, attached to however many tape players each with a tape loop it could be a "magpie-tron". Put a fader or pot on the side of the keyboard as a pitch bender for all of them (motor controller for 15 / 20 / 25 cassette players). Not sure if ELO would approve, but who cares?
Very intrigued with the album!!! Can't wait
Techmoan is crying in pain at the Walkman torture shown here. The wow and flutter is a blade into his soul. 😂
But still, this is a spicy project and entertaining all the same!
Given how well it seemed to be working before anything was done to it, I don't think many tears are being shed.
@@U014B - It's no longer a standard Walkman and you do realise I was taking the piss, evidently by having to use an emoji to signify it was meant to be taken as HUMOUR.
😐😑😐😑😐
@@reggiep75 IDK man. I tend to ignore all emojis someone uses. Especially since most times it's used in a spamming way or some horrible hot take when they know they are wrong
@@Wolfstanus - Lighten up.. It's not exactly the end of the world, but WWIII still might be around the corner 😉🤗
Nice drums, and the bass slaps!
STAY AWESOME DUDE! LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR ALBUM DROP!
Simon, I've been on the edge of trying something with a cassette for a while but you just sent me over. I'm not even halfway through this and I'm really pleased with what I'm seeing and hearing. I'll be seeking more details on this, I'm already subscribed. This is really nice.
EDIT: I'm not really a Cossack, I just used to read adventure novels a lot!
Very clever, looks fun!
I've seen monophonic monotrons made from tapes loops. But I'd like to have a full keyboard of them. I would need what, 37 tape recorders for a small keyboard? That's a lot. There may have been a time when I could get my hands on that many for cheap but they're not easy to find second hand now and they're too expensive new. I love that sound though. Like an Orchestron or a Monotron. When the real tape inside gets a little warbly as it ages. It has a spookiness to it that I love.
Definitely a neat idea, I love tinkering
Righteous work you glorious corvidae
Very neat , love it 🔥👏
Woooipp! 😁
I also liked that sound.
Great idea. 👍
WOWWWWWW AMAZING! U really inspires me!
this is amazing, looks like hours of fun.
That is the craziest Drum n Bass I have ever heard, nice.
Clever. The pause button idea was the best part for me. Thanks for sharing!
That distortion made it all okay👌@9:50
I've seen one of your videos and I hated it. Probably, that was my childhood dreams to do the things you do. So yeah, I hated it and I watched another one just to torment myself more. And then I've checked your music on Spotify. And... I discovered the truth behind those absolutely mad and ridiculous contraptions you build. IT SOUNDS AWESOME! It's something you would swear it can't work. It's just ridiculous. But damn, I love it. I'm a "digital guy", I'm not into analog sound, but you somehow can make those weird guys play in an oddly musical way. Definitely, analog junk music is A THING, you can't just code everything, there's something oddly satisfying in that sound.
You r awesome im excited ^^and inspired thankyou
The button on the stylus is brilliant. I could see a Stylophone or Gakken SX-150 with a stylus for pitch with a button tip for cutoff or LFO etc.
Wicked build!
oh look a loopophone!
I love the little WOOIIP noises!
Cool project!!
Mad scientist!
@10:57 _"That was sounds."_ 🤣
Great idea!
Yo! Thanks for the inspiration, my man. I'm currently fiddling with a cassette-based tape delay module-thingy, but I'll have to get around to making my own version of this stylo some day as well. Totally. BIG uP!
Pinky’s out! Well played.
That high pitch whoosh when you lift up the stylus would sound pretty wicked through an envelope filter with some distortion and echo.
Yeah ! An album !!
looking forward to your album
You are definitely a pretty dope stylophone player!
Excellent!
Honestly, I might just do that to my walkman, I wanted to to do the Mellotron one but it just seemed to complicated (I'm kinda dumb) and this seems simple enough for me to do and produces really cool stuff
That's so damn cool! Thank you again
This is the thing ! Should be Nice to have kind of schematics about that sound beast ✌🏻
I was just about to ask you to sing your falsetto to play. Then you did it yourself. That was great!
You should have invented this in the 1950’s you would have been an avant- guard electronic music pioneer.
He still is in his own way
@@therealwhite What - Still in the 1950's?
What an inspiring fantasy! Great as always Magpie! Kind regards from planet Earth...
There is a guy who sells cassette players converted into CV-controlled tape oscillators. I believe it is called the Ondes-Magnetique.
This guy would probably turn himself into a synth if he could
This was beautiful sounding even the step on ketchup sound
Sweet Jesus I'm onto tape loops rn 💀
just a thought, but maybe use a normal tape instead- those little transports struggle to provide the right back-tension for loop cassettes. just fill up a c90 or whatever with a single tone or whatever.
real mellotron here, & lots of tape-recorders, & (as of last week) weird #11. thanks- nice to have a bit of magpie in the house. wonderful stuff.
Check the guy from nin tour rig the guy that made the strega , he does this kind of thing using tascam 4 track ..
Brilliant! So you can record kind of melotron sounds and play with them.
You, Sir Magpie, are a font of "outside the box" inspiration. I am now compelled to add a speed control to this cassette recorder thing I'm looking at. I subscribed to your podcast, and I feel ignorant every time I listen. Ignorance is bliss. Thank you for indulging me.
That was sounds .. lets make sounds more . Love this guy
that is really a cool idea! maybe you could go build a mix of ondes martenot and melotron.
Super cool!
This seems like it would be interesting with a very thick sound recorded like layered strings or stacked synths. It would also be interesting to try it with doubled electric guitar lines, choir, and looped machinery or engine sounds. Or maybe even just filtered noise!
Could you just solder the softpot ribbon directly to the motor like a regular speed mod?
Conceptually it’s very interesting, but in execution calling it “lo-fi” is extremely generous … even “no-fi” might overstate the case.
Can you post a link to the sensor? I found the company, but Im not sure what the exact strip is.
I think it's brilliant, but I would suggest mounting your pitch strip the other way around, so the low notes are at the left-hand side and the high notes are on the right, as on a keyboard, guitar neck, etc.
Maybe he wants it to be counter-intuitive to inspire creativity. Try playing your keyboard upside down for example. It's pretty fun!
You so CRazY!!! I like it.💡🎶🤖🤙🏽💥❗
Ver 2.0 With a the Stereo Head, split Left Right two tracks and use spring load3d stylus to modulate
This is like dictaphone pedals as a contact strip to me.
Dictaphone was meant for office typists to transcribe meeting minutes, controlling the speed of the playback with their feet as they type
So not a lot of cassette players have a dedicated speed control, but the chip that drives the motor that you can connect to for fun results. AN6650 in two of the newer models I have. There is a small potentiometer hooked up to it to set the speed, and its easy enough to bypass that to your own ribbon potentiometer. I need to make this but so far I’ve only sketched out the idea.
Circuit bending ASMR, thank you so much for your messy expert routine sir! ¡Mucho Gusto! ENSEBEEELEEEE D:
BTW any tips for making my lazy ass more time-efficient- whats the easiest way to record analogue stuff through aux? Jus tha cables plus audio interface?
Very interesting!
Brilliant.
Beautiful 🤩
Nice! I've been wondering what to do with that exact same Sanyo model lying in a drawer for the last 20+ years. This might be its fate. :)
so cool !!!
Have you ever toyed around with a ‘Drawdio’ lead conductive synth? Seems like there may be a way to disengage the pause and pick a tape speed simultaneously without the momentary switch and/or ribbon…. Just maybe 🧐
P.s. imagine the potential with an 8track recorder? Switch through multiple recording samples at the push of a button!
Add two stylus

I LOVE YOU DUDE!
You rock!
very cool !
So much super wharble goodness
this is too fucking cool omg I'm so into this stuff i feel like i'm 15 and a girl
try recording electric guitar when the distortion I think it might be magical
Now can we make the pitch accept cv? That be cool
Where can I find a tutorial to do that?
te amo magpieee
I think I have all the parts to make this. Can you post instructions?
What's your address?
Hey magpie do you have a sphynx?
Great!!!! 😍😍😍
stylomonophon-mellotron
Take my money!!
Time to hit up the second hand stores to get cassette tapes lol
So basically it's a Walkman with a built-in Lfo
Cool
Madman
Cheers
