Props to you for coming on and explaining that if these are salvaged chips, that it might not be a bad thing. I really do like your idea of truth in advertising and if they are reclaimed, then mark them reclaimed! Continue the great work, love the channel... Buddy

+Buddy Martin Thanks buddy, there is really limited facts and information about the stuff sold on ebay, its difficult to know for certain! So far all i have found is that what i've read is actually often incorrect. Just because there is sand marks, solder on legs, inconsistencies with the depth of the pin 1 indicator circle, etc etc, doesn't mean they aren't what they say the are.

+DIY Guitar Pedals That why I like your "truth in advertising" but sadly, even if eBay required them to state if they were used, who is going to police it... It's nice to have you out there just letting everyone know what's going one and "buyer be aware"!

+Buddy Martin Thanks Buddy, as always I try to do my bit for the pedal building community. Glad to hear the info helped!

Yeah Im fine with it...in fact they could sell them for more if the could date them back to the 80s

Those chips are likely salvaged. Typically they are blacktopped and sold as new production. The tops are sanded and a new date code and logo are imprinted. Look at the release marks (circles on top of the chip) most larger chips have them. The area inside the circle should be smooth not textured. If you can scratch off the texture with an xacto knife then it has been blacktopped. Look also for horizontal sanding marks on top of the chip. Selling old used chips as new current production is counterfeiting. The use and abuse these chips have gone through will likely shorten their life. those great deals on eBay are often blacktopped. Blacktopping is done for a variety of reasons (none of them good for the purchaser). Sorry to say but, my experience with eBay is not positive.

    Hello.
I just finished building a CE2 clone, and it seems the MN3007 I got from ebay is defected or fake. Beside visual suspicious, Is there any electronic way to figure if the chip is defected or fake?

I got caught out with 10 fake bbds from china, and even the 2 i bought from uk on ebay didnt work. I was given a realistic reverb unit and so i pulled a salvaged a mn 3007 and 3101 straight from the board. Worked well in my Zombie chorus circuit.
Maybe ill give the small clobe circuit a go in the future.

Could you do a video on fume control whilst soldering? I've done quite a bit now but starting to get precautions that these fumes aren't good for me but no idea how to manage them.

+Brenden Bullet And if you buy one of the box fume extractors ($79 on trade at altrsonics) then take the filter out and use it as a fan for much, much better results. works well for me as long as i'm in reasonable proximity.
