Civil 3D: How to add Dynamic Reference Grids, Scale Bars and North Arrows - 2 Minute Tuesday
Hey Everybody,
Brandon here back with another new 2 minute Tuesday, though to be fair, this one isn't even close to 2 minutes. But I think you'll really enjoy it. It covers 3 great layout tools in Civil 3D.
In today's video, I go over how to automatically add reference grid lines and coordinates to you drawings in layout space that are linked and update automatically. I also show you how to add in an auto-updating north arrow and scalebar to your drawing helping speed up your process as well as help your drawings look more professional. All of these tools are dynamically linked to your viewport, this means for example if you change the scale of your drawing, the scalebar will update automatically.
Don't forget to let me know what AutoCAD tip, trick or tutorial you'd like to see in the next one!
Cheers and thanks for watching

Greetings from Mongolia. Thank you so much for this video. No BS, No confusing talk, straight to the point. 🥳
man adjusting the scale bar was a bitch in class and thats all i had to do to fix it, i feek dumb, youre a g homie keep it up!
Thank you so much, Brandon, you have been helping engineers, architects, and surveyors worldwide. I am from Brazil and I am sending you my gratitude and I hope you keep making the difference.
Your channel looks pretty good to me, so I subscribe. Thank you.
very good and thank you.
may i ask question, how to customize the grid reference? it is possible to edit on that
Your video really helpful, thank u. Do u know how to add grids for many layouts, I have 20 layouts so I have to click to each layout to edit, It take time so much
Oh you are so good with CAD. Do I have a scale bar that I can load in the A CAD? I am not using Civil 3D CAD. Thank you!
Thank you.
HI. thank you for publishing this. However the title at the very top of your video is hiding the ribbon. i can't tell which tab you are on..... just FYI
Thank You
Thank you. i do have a comment. i have played with the north arrow in the past and find its dangerous in the fact even if the view port is locked, if you inadvertently rotate the north arrow the view port changes. you have to put the north arrow on a layer that can be locked. the north arrow should only reflect the view port direction, meaning you should use dviewtwist to set the view, and the arrow would reflect that.
Thanks so much.
I would like to ask how can I remove zeros after decimal places in grid coordinate?
Thank for watching and glad I could help! You can change the precision (how many decimal places show) by entering the command LUPREC and changing the default which is 3 decimal places, to 0 to remove the trailing 0s.
Cheers!
@@Cadintentions Thanks once again. You;re really helpful.
Much appreciations bro.
How do you change the style of the reference system? ie, change "5616400.0" to "5,616,400 mN" or change the text height, styles etc?
Hi Travis, did you ever figure this out? I'm currently trying to find a solution for this.
Hi... how can I edit the reference values grids?
how put a table under the grids? shading the lines of the grid.
thanks
how to show grid coordinates on two sides only, and how to enlarge text of coordinates of grid
My scale properties are not the same as the viewport scale, if I change it and link to the viewport it changes the viewport to a different scale.
how to change the weight of lines? color? etc
