  • This video is the first of a series that examines film genre as a topic of study. The video examines the definition of genre, the different components of film genre, the functions of film genre, and various strategies for employing genre in film analysis.
Some of the animations and ideas in this video were borrowed from this video - • Inspect 'em Ups: Genre... - which begins with an excellent analysis of genre.
Clips about the "manic pixie dream girl" trope were excerpted from this video by The Take - • The Manic Pixie Dream ... - which provides a much more in-depth discussion of the trope, its history, as well as some of its shortcomings that had resulted from its overuse.

Thank you for this video. Helped a lot in understanding genre in film studies. Can you please make another video that talks about what other critics and film theorists have to say about genre and its evolving nature in films

another great video, Jordan!! I really enjoy your classes. I'd love to know more about formal patterns of genres that could go unnoticed by most audiences and other patterns that reflect social values. And, if it may be possible, could you do some video essay about mannerism in hollywood cinema? thanks for sharing your knowledge with us

thanks! If you're interested in "patterns that reflect social values," that's a fairly common form of film criticism on UA-cam, and you can find good examples of this (with very high production value) at Pop Culture Detective (ua-cam.com/channels/Hiwtz2tCEfS17N9A-WoSSw.html) and The Take (ua-cam.com/users/thetake).
By "mannerism," do you mean the art style Mannerism or the mannerisms of particular actors?

@@filmandmediastudieschannel thanks so much for your attention! I’m talking about art style Manneirism, the type that occurs in some movies directed by Brian de Palma and Dario Argento.

I liked 90% of this video for its deep, scientific analysis of genre, however the gender analysis at the end is in and of itself a contemporary genre trope. Whereby film critics try to deny inherent biological differences between males and females as purely social constructs, mainly of the “insecure” males imagination or gaze. This has become a cliche stereotypical analysis between 2014-2022 (one that’s proving not to be very profitable). The manic pixie female character in Eternal Sunshine for example 1) gets benefits and value from being that archetype (it’s not exclusively beneficial to the male) and 2) her character provides incredible value to the story as there is a kind of fool like wisdom to her never ending spontaneity. In conclusion, I challenge you to examine genre and character archetypes’s from the perspective of their relationship to unconscious, primal, universal and biological patterns of consciousness. And take a small objective break from the mania, hyperbole and hysteria around male shaming and blaming in the film industry. It might be cool now and give a sense of being modern however I’d recommend focusing on deeper, more timeless levels than the less interesting, fleeting, and transient societal level. In any case, thank you for the other 90%; it was one of the best breakdowns of genre I’ve come across on the internet.
