I'm pretty sure this is going to end up being my favorite song of the year, or maybe even the whole decade. To know that Neil Peart helped on this makes it even more powerful. I feel like this song is a great tribute to Neil's life. When Matt sings 'You're Gone' at the end it was almost as if he was saying goodbye to Neil. It breaks my heart that Neil is gone but I love the fact that he will live on in such a beautiful song.
I can't say enough about this new VH cd. I believe this is my favorite track and it is so poignant and the haunting melody and lyrics truly evoke images that make the listener fill cold--both physically and emotionally (in other words, it's a damn sad song!). Are those bird calls from the loon? I don't know but this is great, great work. Thanks again VH (and Matt). This was worth the wait!
Richard Kooijker It's a loon. "The loon, the size of a large duck or small goose, resembles these birds in shape when swimming. Like ducks and geese but unlike coots (which areRallidae) and grebes (Podicipedidae), the loon's toes are connected by webbing. The bird may be confused with cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), which are not too distant relatives of divers and like them are heavy set birds whose bellies - unlike those of ducks and geese - are submerged when swimming. Flying loons resemble a plump goose with a seagull's wings, relatively small in proportion to the bulky body. The bird holds its head pointing slightly upwards during swimming, but less so than cormorants do. In flight the head droops more than in similar aquatic birds." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loon#Description

You are missed, Professor. Thank you for stepping outside the comfort zones to lay down percussion for this song...
RIP to a great human being and drummer. He'll forever live on through songs so beautifully written such as this one. Much Peace & Love Matt.
