Correction: The earliest dinosaur toy was released in 1922 by a company named TWISTUM. It was made in the likeness of a sauropod, like Brontosaurus. And Rex is actually based on the Dino Riders T-Rex figure, first released in 1988.
The smaller corporation purchased by Mattel is a reference to TYCO being bought out by Mattel, TYCO made Dino Riders. BTW Dino Riders were made of a really weird plastic that as it ages becomes really brittle.
5:39 my grandma has a china doll of Curly Sue and another doll from the fifties that has a wig made from her own hair from when she was a little girl. My great grandmother knew a woman that had a business where you could take your daughters for a haircut and the barber would take the clippings and braid them into a wig for china dolls.
I guess the film doesn't work as well anymore now that kids don't really play with toys anymore. I mean, the toys in this film are supposed to be relatable to everyone via cultural osmosis and now thats gone, and i think that takes away a lot of the power of the film.
According to a Toy Story 3 magazine, Lotso-Huggin-Bear was originally created for A Tin Toy Christmas (which later became Toy Story). That early version of the character was based on the Care Bears line, but was scrapped along the way. Then Pixar brought Lotso back as the antagonist for Toy Story 3, and even went so far as to create fake 1980s commercials for him as a backstory. He's very similar to Woody and Buzz, in that he's more of an amalgamation of different toys, rather than just being based solely on one specific product
I still have my Mr. Potato head from the 70s. It's probably my earliest toy, I remember. I even have a pick up me as a little kid.Wearing Mr. Potato heads glasses and I have his lips in my mouth with the pipe in its mouth and for some reason.Tinker toys in my ears and nose. But I was a weird kid.
Actually Bo Peep is not THAT kind of porcelain doll. She is a porcelain victorian FIGURE, if you search it on Google you will notice that it really looks like Bo Peep and makes sense since she's part of a lamp (a decoration)
Really cool video… one part about Mattel’s refusal to include Barbie in the original Toy Story. IIRC it had more to do with Mattel thinking Toy Story would be a flop than it did with protecting the brand. Many at the time were skeptical about a full featured CGI animated film and Mattel didn’t want their biggest property associated with a potential failure. Once Toy Story proved to be a massive box office hit Mattel allowed the brand to appear in Toy Story 2.
Rex and Sid's Pteranodon were both based on merchandise for two dinosaur-themed franchises; the former on Dino Riders (Tyco) and the latter on Jurassic Park (Kenner).
Hey man, this was a really good video, but you got some things wrong 1. The reason why Barbie wasn't in the first film was that nobody knew if the film would be good 2. Bo peep was based on porcelain lamps with fable characters in them instead of a random porcelain doll 3. Woody was based off an old marionette toys from the 40s and 50s ( mainly howdy doody ) and as the movie developed he lost those features untill the second movie came out solidifying that he was based off a marionette character 4. Buzz was just a mash up of all the cool toys from the 80s and 90s. They got most of their inspiration from star wars toys of that time
Woody's design is believed to be based on Lucky Luke; which is understandable on a surface level, as Disney once had distribution rights to sell Lucky Luke VHS tapes for the English Dub to "Daisy Town" and "The Ballad of the Daltons".
real toys based on the mutant toys (cause the mutant toys were forgotten note I got the bases off of Disney Wiki) Babyface: fusion of a baby doll and a erector set Ducky: is a fusion of a duck head, PEZ dispenser with a baby doll torso atop and a plunger base. The Frog: main body: fusion of a tin wind-up frog and mismatched push along toy car wheels. Hand-in-the-Box: fusion of a Frankenstein-like hand, a spring toy and a musical Jack-in-the-Box that plays "Pop Goes the Weasel". Jingle Joe: is a fusion of toy based off a Melody Push Chime, a Combat Carl head on top, and a severed Mickey Mouse arm. Pump Boy: fusion of a yellow 1954 convertible car and baby doll limbs instead of wheels. Rockmobile: is a fusion of a Rocky Gibraltar, Combat Carl, and an unknown housefly/mantis hybrid. RollerBob (sometimes spelled Rollerbob): is a fusion of a pilot action figure and a mini school skateboard.
To answer your question at the end, I grew up in the late 90s, early 00s, the only toy of these that I had that wasn't a movie tie-in was Mr. potato head. Ones that were a movie tie-in? I pretty much had all of them, though I was a little salty my Jessie wasn't in scale with the others, she was much larger than she should be.
Bo Peep isnt just a porcelain doll, She’s part of Molly’s bedside table lamp. I don’t think Andy was supposed to play with her but he did anyway so that Woody had a girlfriend/“damsel in distress”
I'd remember having a Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Etch-A-Sketch, Lincoln Logs (even though it's in the sequel,) and those green plastic soldiers. Good times!
I actually had etch, the Potato Heads, the toy soilders and the Little Tikes fire truck as a child. Though, I played with the school bus made by the same company more.
I was watching an episode of American Pickers about 6 or 7 years ago and I remember they found this toy that was basically woody either in a car or on a horse. Same shirt, same vest, same hat. It was dated from the 60s I believe so I guarantee one of the designers had one of those toys as a kid and used it as inspiration. Whether intentional or not, it was Woody 30 years before Woody
Actually the reason we have piggy banks because there's a story of a boy that bought a piglet from a farm for only 0.50¢. then the boy raise the pig all by himself by raising and feeding the pig. After the pig grew up, he sold the pig for over $10 (worth a lot in the time) and give it to the funding for the organization he's in. After the story is spread, the organization creates novelty ceramic pigs that can take in coins which is when a piggy bank is born in America.
The Army men are based off the TimMee modern soldiers introduced in 1968 and produced by times itself until the company closed in 2005 as well as hundreds of knockoffs made by other companies with the knockoff being the reason for TimMee closure. TimMee would be resurrected in 2011 by BMC toys which was buying up classic toy soldiers molds to sell. Basically if you played with toy soldiers in the last 50 years these are the toy soldier you played with
Wow this channel still exists. your old red ring of death series (particularly the wii u video) randomly popped into my head. good to see you still around after all these years.
I always thought Rex was inspired by Dino Rider from the late 80’s. That was a over looked toy line. The scale and articulation for Rex and Trixie are similar to the toys. Anyways great video!!!😊
I think buzz was just a riff off of the flashy action figures from the 80s/90s with movable and retractable pieces, lights and sounds as opposed to Woody's old fashioned doll type figure from the 50s/60s
i still have the Dino Riders Tyrannosaurus that this franchise's Rex is actually based on. All the accessories, unfortunately, are long gone, but I have the Rex itself.
Found one of those little people fire trucks at a goodwill back when I was eleven or twelve. Scraped up pretty good and missing the dudes, but I found a real one in the wild.
Buzz Lightyear was actually based on a real person. Buzz Aldrin, and "lightyear" is based on a measurement of the speed of light, and the colors were added because John Lasseter and his wife Nancy loved the colors green and purple.
I would have unironically loved a mr potatoe head with a car and trailer. that sounds like my kinda toy. I used to grab our random assortment of legos we had as a kid and made working gumball machines, models of dodge ram trucks, and an RV with bathroom, bed, kitchen, and etc.
I think I also had a Rex toy as a little kid, maybe in 2012 or something. And like in the middle of 2013 and 2014 or whatever, I think I had Woody and Buzz toys… so… the three almost looked movie-accurate or something… I think.
Fisher Price's Chatter Phone was featured in at least one of the movies (I forget which one). In any case, I used to have one of those, as a kid. Woody reminded me of pull-string toys that I used to have, especially talking ones. Buzz was more reminiscent of talking push-button toys, that my sister would've played with. Of course, we had Barbies. And no, porcelain dolls aren't meant to be played with, so I don't know why Andy's mom allowed him to have one, in the first place. Those were the types of dolls that you would've seen at your grandma's house, when she said, "You can look, but don't touch." There's been news of a Toy Story 5, but I don't think it's necessary. I mean, what more could they possibly do with this story? Part 4 was...meh. Honestly, they should've stopped after 3.
So I have to say something about Bo Peep she's not as old as you would might think 50s or 60s... she's actually a lamp and myguess can be detached from the base and that's why Andy would play with him it was actually Molly's lamp
@Rod Studios There were no "Cowboy toys" during the late 1800s (1807, 1808 and 1809). In fact the term "Cowboy" didn't even exist then. I think that you may have meant to say late 1890s.
Toy Story 2 itself goes into the history of the toys... Well kinda at least. It points out how western stuff was everything and then Sputnik happened and space took over.
I have a 36 inch doll that looks like that from the 1910s and now I’m selling it on eBay cause it’s too big for my closet (and it does creep me out a little tbh)
Toy I play is a Disney princess doll and My little pony toy. I do like Disney Princess a lot more because it have my favorite Disney movie like The little mermaid and Aladdin doll like Ariel and Jasmine.
A slinky, a slinky, can't remember all the words. I used to do routines of slinky tricks to music when I was in my 20s. my grandmother had got me the old-fashioned metal kind instead of the plastic one.
Yes, we do but after the 1990s, it became different novelty coin banks these days. Like a MLP, Pokemon, marvel superheroes and such. And yes, there's still a standard piggy bank... Been around in America since the 1890s... Which is a long story.

And Rex is actually based on the Dino Riders T-Rex figure, first released in 1988.
Yeah I was gonna say, rex is based on a specific dinosaur toy not just dino toys in general
Interesting how the real version looks like a legit terrifying dinosaur as opposed to the goofy (although i'm sure it was intentional) looking rex

The concept behind using bo-peep was the idea that kids would take their parent commodities and play with them.
“The dawg” is so unnecessarily funny i have no idea why

I was positive that "Lucky Luke" was one of the main inspirations for Woody's overall design.
Woody, Bullseye and Woody's Roundup are based on Tex Tucker, Rocky and Four Feather Falls respectively.
