    THANK YOU SO MUCH for the instructions with texts, it helps me a lot as I'm deaf...so many artists uses their voices which I can't hear at all, visual painting with texts helps a LOT!! I appreciate you taking the time to add texts to it!! Love your step by step instructions!! You ROCK!!

      +DefBlonde2 Oh good! I'm so glad this helped you! Most of my videos do have audio, but I'm working on getting captioning up for them. I hope I can do that very soon

      I realized that most of your videos has audios as I just finished watching Sunset Power Lines, wow, beautiful sunset/clouds but hardly any texts...waaah! :-( Oh yes, please, I look forward to more texts on your videos (FYI, please do not use "automatic closed captioning" from youtube cuz it never comes out right, but the one you did with this video was perfect!). Thank you SO much!! :-)

    For years I thought I couldn’t draw until one day I tried it and found that I could draw. The same with painting, I thought I couldn’t paint. I was afraid I’d fail. I was wrong. My late husband surprised me and bought WC paint, brushes, WC paper and a book about color theory and color mixing when our daughter was about six. She’s now 47 and my husband recently passed away but I found out that painting was for me a wonderful thing. It has given me an outlet for my grief and stress. If anyone says to me that they can’t paint, I ask if they’ve tried it. Always the answer is no. So I urge them to try, I’ve even shared my art supplies and some basic instruction and they’re always shocked when they find that they can paint. That’s the greatest gift I can give, sharing my love of art. I think you must feel the same way. You’re a very gifted instructor and an incredible artist. Thank you for sharing your talent and skill with the world!❤️

    The painting is great but I think the highlights were a little distracting. Sometimes I find that "a little" often becomes a problem with several paintings. The light on the lighthouse painting was a similar problem for me. Although the light is important, soft color blend works best.

    nice job but...look up the shape of a Ravens tail and you will find it to be more of a knife shape at the end. That looks like a crows tail. The beak, head and body looks great with a very nice tutorial.

  • @bodhipeace
    @bodhipeace 9 років тому +1

    You organized the whole video very well. The bird came out well. I just wonder if you looked at any images beforehand of the bird's features? I think the tail feathers could be either more tapered or split with rounded ends. The legs could also be a bit longer and stronger.

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  9 років тому +1

      +Bodhi Rus Thank you. No, I did not look at any images for this painting. It's not meant to be a realistic bird, just stylized and free :)

  • @chaosopher23
    @chaosopher23 8 років тому +1

    Awesome! Yeah, I learned a few things :) :)
    Acrylics do dry half an hour before you put them on the palette, so my solution is acrylic retarder medium, between 25% and 50%, and thin with a spray bottle. It changes a few minutes to about 20 - 30 minutes. Liked and subscribed!
    (Careful, you could give a guy a hand fetish!)

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 років тому +1

      +Kevin Zabbo lol, Thanks, Kevin!
      Thanks for the tips on the retarder. I have some, and I've used it occasionally, but I'm typically such a spontaneous painter (and impatient, haha!) that it's hard for me to plan out needing those types of things. I suppose someday I'll have to work on figuring how those things might work into my technique. Thanks for watching :D

    this is the best beginners instructional video I have seen on youtube. Thank you for being so detailed and letting us know the exact brush you use. I do have one question. At the beginning of your video when using the large dry brush, do you at any point dip the brush into water or is it dry at all times? You did a great job, this is a pretty painting. I can't wait to try this. :)

    Ok I will be happy to show you. I have been going between acrylics, and watercolors with a bit of pastel thrown in . Im trying to find my 'happy medium' I think I am leaning towards acrylics . +valerie Potter Thanks! Watercolor is something I can't really get a handle on, so I look up to anyone who can do it!! I like acrylic because you can use it like watercolor if you need to, and you can add mediums to it to make it work more like oil too.

    I know what you mean lol I am bouncing back and forth because both mediums have their pros and cons . I love that watercolors are so flowing and free as well you can reconstitute but there is NO room for error which can be very frustrating . Acrylics you can use it in so many different ways but before I recently discovered mediums it felt a bit frenzied hurrying before the paint dried . I guess I love them both but I think now it is acrylics I am leaning furtherst to I just love this crow painting its just brilliant on so many levels.

    Hey... any advice on not wasting paint?? Either I pour too much or I mess up (usually forgetting that I have to wait for the paint to dry before correcting a mistake) and end up using more. Or, I mix the paint, because I need a solid color that's a mixture, and end up using a lot more of the colors that make up that mixture. Painters, like you, pour the paint ahead of time and use it all without wasting any or using more... I want to know your secret... Also, I don't think I've ever seen you pour any paint into your pallet, except the very beginning...

      I usually try to put out less than I think I need. You can always get more, but it's hard to take it back. Also, I never mix up a whole batch of a color. I just mix it as I go. I don't mind if it's a little bit of a different color each time. I think that helps it look like a painting and not a print. Actually, most of the time I try for a slightly different color when I mix.

      +Clinton “Notorious” Brennan I think you can find it if you look for natural hog hair or boar hair bristle brush. If you have a Michael's craft store near you, you can get a pack of several of them for like $7. They're pretty inexpensive. They're stiffer than a regular brush. Good luck! Let me know if you're still having a hard time finding them.

      +Isla Grand Beach Resort I've never used that brand, but I think any brand that gets you started is good to use :) As you paint, if you decide it's something you love to do and you notice issues with the paint, just start replacing it with a higher quality paint.

    I tried a painting with this type of colour- blended center. I found that I got a lot of the texture of the canvas coming through the areas where the different colours blended together. Is this typical or is there a way to reduce the amount of "hashtag" texture?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 років тому

      I think that can be produced a couple of ways. If your brush is too wet, it thins the paint out too much, if you're not using enough paint, if you overwork the blend, or it could be an issue with that canvas. Try gessoing your canvas, using a dry brush (which is what I did), and make sure you pick up more paint. I hope that helps, Beth! Let me know if you still have any questions :)

    Beautiful work and so well explained every step of the way. I note, you started with a dry brush, never using water, was the canvas dry as well please?
    i would guess that be using a mister when doing the background, the blending would be more softer?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 років тому

      +Rach Timmins Thank you, Rach! Nope, my brush and the canvas were dry the whole time. It depends on the type of background I'm doing and the type of brush I'm using. I almost always use this brush dry. When I'm doing more blending and using a flat brush, I'll wet the brush. When I want a thin, transparent background, I'll mist the canvas as well. Just my preference. I know some artists always wet the background before they paint.

    Very nice. Do you have to prime the canvas before starting. I've seen some people wet the canvas first or use some sort of white base?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 років тому

      +Jasmine H Everyone works a little different. I don't usually do anything to my canvas first, unless I'm painting over an old painting. Then I just paint it white first. I only use gesso (primer) when I'm doing my smoky background technique (I have a video for that too). Try out a few different ways and see what you like best :)

    • @PaintingwithJane

      It's just a cheap canvas from the craft store. I might have painted over an old painting before painting this on it. I never use gesso, though. Just straight out of the package.
