A TODDLER whose head swelled to three times its natural size is undergoing a dramatic resurgence. Three-year-old Roona Begum hit headlines last year when she was rushed to hospital suffering from an extreme form of hydrocephalus - also known as water on the brain. Surgeons in New Delhi were able to reduce the size of her head from 37in to 23in but she was later discharged with little chance of survival. Yesterday (July 23) they were amazed to find that not only is Roona alive - but is well enough to even smile. She is still unable to walk because of the weight of her head but is able to crawl, eat and interact with her loving parents Abdul Rahman, 21, and Fatima Khatun, 23. They hope she will be well enough to attend school next year. In light of her continued recovery, doctors are considering another operation to further reduce the size of her head. However, her parents, having seen her brought back from the brink several times, are worried about the risks and are deciding whether to give their consent.

I'm not trying to be rude or racist but why does India have like a lot of rare diseases like these?
Because Parts of India is really poor so they can't afford fresh water so they drink murky water which gives deseases I think hope this doesn't come out wrong sorry if it does.
Also mainly because most of them marry off the girl to old guys within the family .like distance cousins and stuff like that. So the gen pool is too close .
Well because is one of the biggest countries in the world. The more people, the more rare diseases. Like in a little country with small population, almost no diseases. Also poor quality food and water in most rural aereas, and the health care system doesnt really work. It doesnt even reach 3/4 parts of the country, making it impossible to monitorize pregnancies and be ready for treatments. :(
It's because there're so many people in India, the population is huge, about 1.2-1.5 billion. And there's so much poverty and lack of resources as well. Since there's so much poverty, there're diseases as well because of people getting sick from dirty water and such. And since there're so many people, those diseases spread easily.

That's called "kajal" in Hindi which is basically shoot from candle which they collect on an flat metal plate and apply it around eyes to make it look big and cute. Also it is believed that it keeps bad spirit away from children. My mother used to do it too.

I'm just sayin'. A lot of times with bizarre cases like this, it is inbreeding IF its genetic but I did not know it wasn't genetic so thank you for that.
Sorry for getting up in arms, I have hydrocephalus myself and was all worked up after seeing the little girl like that because I've seen firsthand how not diagnosing and having a shunt put in soon enough (it means water on the brain) the soft skull will expand then harden leaving the skull deformed
How tragic for her and her family. Even if they can reduce the swelling what kind of life is she going to have. Even the Dr admitted that there is brain damage. Plus one can only imagine what kind of pain she's in all the time.
I saw a video of another baby like this, the baby screamed throughout the video and he sounded like he was in extreme pain.
