After watching your video, I did subscribe to FilmLab for one year. I do my post production in PhotoShop Raw, and just don't feel like getting involved with Lightroom for this project. I don't have rolls of film. I have thousands of cut strips of 6 frames from 45 years of photographing musicians. Thus, the retrospective. So thank you for the tip. It will work just fine for me. The reason I decided to pay for a year is that once i finish the 2 retrospectives, I won't be going back to film, as beautiful as it is. $45 is not bad, and it is a tax deduction. $200 for lifetime would have been wasted. BTW: I use a lens hood, but I guess the toilet paper roll is good recycling! I also subscribed to your channel. Thank you.
@@ribsyAnd since you need LR, it makes sense. But for people like me, I prefer DxO and something standalone. DxO I noticed has a built in profile to do negative conversions. No batching that I noticed but I’m not an expert. Please consider another look. They are even talking about a Linux version for geeks like me.
I am using this now, the version 3 release, and am really pleased with the results. I still think NLP is a tad better. However, watching the video from the person who created FilmLab, I feel it will eventually equal NLP. As it stands now, I am much happier that this is a standalone product and NOT subscription. For me as a dedicated film shooter, worth the lifetime subscription. It was paid for after scanning about 20 rolls of film is how I view this. Ribsy, it would be worth an updated review, if you have not already done one.
Hi Eric, great review and it's good to see a standalone product, instead of one that integrate with a particular software. I have noticed that they have added a lifetime offer now along with the subscriptions.
Thanks for the preview of this but as others have stated, the subscription model for an app is no-go. I've been doing the conversion in LR currently and looking for an app like this. Tried the trial version of NLP and it's good. I'll probably spend the $100 for NLP. I've watched many of your video's and I'm glad I found your channel. Looking forward to what you publish.
hey! yea, subscription is tough. although they just added a new lifetime price! so i think it may be more attractive now. NLP is def great, also. thanks for watching. i appreciate the support 😊
Ribs, another excellent review thank you for for your input and examples. I've had FilmLab bookmarked for about a year and after seeing your presentation will look deeper into a yearly subscription. I like it simple do it right the first time in camera, normal light and contrast and send it to print. Been doing it since 1960 yeah film. Love your reviews, was going to jump in when you were having issues with your 6x7 but, you got it fixed cheers take care till next time.
I was just thinking about this app.. and you already posting a video about it! what a coincidence, haha. Not bad at all, I like it! I like the photos itself too, really nice shots
This app is perfect, thanks for sharing Ribsy... Just downloaded a version, and YES, it converts any type of negative into positive images in a snap. Not perfect, but then it can all be tweaked in Photoshop or Lightroom.
Thanks for this info! Since I’m experimenting with going back to film photography along with using digital and am not sure how far I’ll be taking this project, the subscription is a great alternative to purchasing an expensive license right off the bat. I’m really happy to see this alternative to dropping a hundred bucks this month. And if I decide to continue with film long term, then I’ll invest in a more expensive and in-depth program. Thanks again...
Thanks much for the review. In my case, considering how expensive is getting film to me, it helps me to make small payments only in the months where I will be processing my scans. Besides I feel like I am paying for more freer time shooting than inverting the negatives.
so FilmLab doesn't require this step before conversion. afterwards, once of the main sliders you have at your disposal is the temp and tint. so you can adjust it directly after if you don't like what it outputs
great review! i bought epson v370 (about $100). Its time consuming but I like the results after some tweaking in LR. as a hobbyist, i am also looking for other alternatives. Neglab pro and this filmlab are very good options but yeah, i dont like a monthly subs and their life time payment is much expensive than my epson. i'll consider them if they cost $50 haha!
For something that offers such basic adjustment the subscription model just doesn't work for me. NLP might be more to buy intially but it also integrates into LR. It feels like this should be a $60 one of payment bit of software.
yea agreed. i don't find a subscriptions attractive for plug-in type software. however, some people are looking for something that doesn't use LR/PS at all, eliminating any reliance on the additional software. this will fill someone's need, but i don't see it scaling substantially
@@ribsy Do you know if you can "batch" process all of your images? (from a whole role for example?) And I agree with Mark... the current price seems exorbitant, even more if you can't batch process, since you can use Capture One or any other software to get to the same point without any plug-in even.
This is how I use it. You can browse to a folder of negatives on your drive and it will show you a preview of all the negatives. You can then select all and do a quick conversion to positive preview, then go back and tweak each one, then a batch export. I use it on Mac and Windows. I also own NLP and although I believe it yields slightly better results, the gap is small. I do like that FilmLab is standalone. I really want to get rid of my subscription to LRC.
Great effort, however yours as well as many other UT videos don't address the basic need of a casual user wanting to scan a collection of 1000 or more negatives accumulated since eons and do it reasonably quickly while preserving maximum practical quality. Fiddling with one frame 15 minutes doesn't solve the problem. I have recently bought the Epson V600 and for the past 1 week have scanned the same strip of negative w/ different programs as well as control methods to determine what works and what does not. I tried the Silverfast SE software that comes free with the V600, however outside of the fact that it crashes every time on 3rd or 4th frame in a batch, it is quirky in how it does not always detect framing. EPSON Scan on the other hand does not crash, it detects framing very well, but lacks the preset negative film types, which are offered by Silverfast SE. I fail to see the benefit of these film presets if the application crashes and you don't get the job done at all. Another issue is the ideal dpi resolution to use. I've settled at 4800 in EPSON Scan as the one giving best sharpness results along with Digital ICE Tech.. By bumping it higher to 6400 or 9600, the images lose contrast and are not "better" in a practical sense. As positive images, the tiff files have a size of 165MB, while as JPG only 5MB. Since storage space is not an issue for me, I don;t mind creating such large file archive. Considering the potential the Lightroom offers for post processing selected tiff files from EPSON Scan, I do not see any benefit in wasting time with the Negative Lab Pro as part of the work flow.
@@ribsyValoi Easy 35 and FilmLab and I can convert 4 rolls of 36 exposures in 30 minutes before I start work at 8 AM, since I work from home. I do need to watch more of your awesome vids on NLP before I totally give up on it because it does take longer for me than FilmLab does, plus as I have ranted in a few other comments, I don’t want that subscription fee. Ironically, I work for a software company and we are all about transitioning to subscription based services, so I know that perpetual licenses are fading fast, so get one while you can
agreed. yea, it aint broke don't fix it kind of thing. although, i def don't think any program is doing it as well as i want it to be done. room for improvement all around. looking forward to seeing how all develop

Would love to see a comparison on the newest version of filmlab and NLP
I only use NLP nowadays

yea agreed! i think they saw everyone's feedback and added the option because of it. glad to see it happen 😊
They have actually implemented a one time perpetual license as well as subscription. You have the option. Nice to see!
yup! that's recent. glad to see they listened to the people! 😁
Great overview of this new software Ribs, very objective and clear 👌🏼
great! glad it was useful. i do like the software 😊
It’s so interesting to see your editing process!
glad its useful. this is a new software so i'm just starting to mess around with it 😊

Good point! Very low barrier to entry
Thanks for this comparison. Love NLP just hate needing that monthly fee of adobe
yeaa! i hear that alot haha
Prof. Ribs here!!
hahaha i like the way that name sounds 😂
Thank you for your video! Did I understand you correctly that you used this software after shooting your slides with your camera?
nope not slide, color negatives

Yea good to save money
NLP produces the inverted image after you correct the whitebalance and crop the image, do you know if FilmLab accounts for that?
so FilmLab doesn't require this step before conversion. afterwards, once of the main sliders you have at your disposal is the temp and tint. so you can adjust it directly after if you don't like what it outputs

i would like to see hpw things go when using a sacnner.
i dont see any raw exprt.
i dont use a scanner much anymore unfortuantely
appreciate you !
Thanks for watching
How do you get the negative on the pc?
i scan the film negative with a digital camera
at 5:33 you had clicked far right on the sliders and missed the auto buttons it seems! Thats why you didn't like the output haha
i always felt the need to work on the sliders. never liked the default auto as is
@@ribsy haha yep but I think at that moment in the video you meant to give auto a chance

NLP look way better. Wish it was a standalone without LR subscription
yea it would be great if NLP was stand alone
Subscription based at 40 dollars a month??? Na I'll stick with NLP
lol i think you misread the website. its either 39.99 for the year OR 5.99 per month. 40/per month would be insane ... haha 😂
Sorry my bad, subscription not per month but per year but once you've paid for NLP, it'll have to be pretty damn good to make people change

Tried using FilmLab for a month and i honestly didn’t like it at all, first of all its subscription based and then it has too little tools.
ahh gotcha. yea, to each their own. this one is def meant to functional but simple. i don't mind it
Testei e não deu certo.
hmm not sure why it didn't work for you
Not impressed this is subscription based. There are alternatives to PS and LR. Affinity photo is a very viable alternative, with no subscription.
interesting - i need to check out affinity photo. thanks for the suggestion 😁
There's an option of paying $199.99 for life time access though
