  • "Clean Lines, Open Spaces: A View of Mid-Century Modern Architecture," a new documentary produced by AETN's Mark Wilcken, focuses on the construction boom in the United States after World War II. Sometimes considered cold and unattractive, mid-century modern designs were a by-product of post-war optimism and reflected a nation's dedication to building a new future. This new architecture used modern materials such as reinforced concrete, glass and steel and was defined by clean lines, simple shapes and unornamented facades.
The documentary looks at examples of mid-century modern architecture around the state, from the University of Arkansas's Fine Arts Center designed by Arkansas native and internationally known architect Edward Durell Stone to the Tower Building in Little Rock, the Fulbright Library in Fayetteville that reflects the aesthetics of famous Chicago architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, and the abandoned Hotel Mountainaire, perfectly defining art moderne. Beautiful documentary, makes me appreciate mid-century modern design even more than I already do, if that were possible.

Great work to ALL involved in this film! Well produced, filmed, and narrated on Arkansas's (and perhaps middle America's) finest mid century architecture. You should all be proud to have made a great documentary. Excellent work!

Very nicely made documentary! Dallas has lots of mid-century modern architecture. I'd like to see a documentary made about the mid-century modern architecture in Dallas.

Well done. An excellent primer on the mid-century modern style. I liked the Arkansas focus, too, although I have never even set foot in that state. Every building is located someplace specific, even if it is in an architectural style which is essentially international. A geographical method of structuring a program makes good sense, even if you are not looking at a major city like New York or Paris, which might be the more common thing.

if a woman asks you not to put her in- it would be nice not to put her in. human dimension is missing.
when it comes to the content of the movie- i expected more. because- those words: clean lines, open spaces- they are so powerful, but you didn't bother to dig deeper.
