One of my Top 5 R&B records of all time, makes me cry every listen! My mom (rest her soul) loved Alicia but she wasn’t alive to hear this song. She would’ve loved it. Beautiful reactions always bro!

Still can't listen to this song without thinking of my brother, grandmother, and everyone else I have lost too soon. Alicia Keys really understood grief when she wrote this,

She wrote this about her grandmother who was dying fron cancer and she was her caretaker. She also had to go convince and ask Prince to use the piano melody (similar to the ending/outro of the full version of the song Purple Rain) and he told her she had to switch up the chords a lil bit because he didn't want the suits at her label to be able to send their kids to college on his material and that artists need to fight to own their material.

Didn't know that😢 AK was obviously going thru alot of changes during the time this song came out. RIP to her grandmother

Thanks for the info. I always wondered how that went over with Prince. I know how he was when it came down to his music & rightfully so. I'm glad they were able to work it out. Such a touching tribute to her grandmother. I always liked this song, but I didn't know it was about her grandmother. Knowing that makes it even more special. RIP to her grandmother.

@@CRobb-ql4zp I think they were cool by that point so it must've been more casual.
She had to call him to OK her How Come You Don't Call Me cover for her debut album too and he invited her to a gig at Paisley Park at the time, I remember her telling the story about him having a swearing money jar.
During her second album era he asked her and Outkast to induct him at the Hall Of Fame.
He handed her a Grammy award for the As I Am or No One era, but I vaguely remember her saying he subtly tried to tell her her music was becoming a bit too mainstream and generic lol I think it was in her book.
Around her fourth album he invited her onstage to perform How Come You Don't Call Me with him I think. He also called her a "genius who deserved the best" to his audience around this time, after seeing one of her shows, but after telling the audience that the venue's sound was trash lol.
I believe from this that they were cool and I'm glad Alicia got to be that throughout her career. I believe he does checks up on up and coming artists and supports them, same he did with Beyonce, Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monae, etc.

@@valerievelarde62 Yeah, you can hear it on No One. The way she sang those songs form that album, she clearly was going through a phase. Taking care of her dying grandmother, I remember her also saying she felt overworked during the Diary era and that she went to Egypt by herself to reflect. She named her first son Egypt because of it.
She also eventually got rid her of manager who discovered her and had known since a young teenager, who was taking a way bigger cut of money than what's normal. He started managing H.E.R. who is a big fan of AK, until H.E.R. realized he was greedy too and got rid of him as well lol.

@@lookhowshegobbledthat Oh, I didn't mean worked it out in that manner. I meant I was glad they worked out the changes that was needed to release the song. But that is nice to hear that he looked out for up & coming artists. He always was dropping knowledge. He came across to me from my vantage to be wise & prescient. Not many in the music business, who are as popuar & talented as he was did that to my knowledge. I watched Tevin Campbell's interview on Arsenio Hall Show. He told Arsenio the advice Michael Jackson gave him about being in the music industry. I thought that was really nice of him to give the mentorship type of advice he gave him. I also remember AK mentioning how she & other younger artists would go & visit female artists like Anita Baker & other female artists that paved the way for them just to check up on them. I think those type of stories like you shared should be talked about more. Not just because of them being celebrities, but just on a human level. It's was nice to read. Thanks for taking out the time to share that.
