Ravens are among the longest-lived of birds, often living over 60 years. They are also considered the most intelligent of birds, so Tolkien chose well the friends of the dwarves of Erebor.
I've had ravens live near my home, and one mated pair nested in a tree in my backyard. They take time in raising their young, and unmated children, after leaving the nest, will return to help their parents in raising younger siblings. They tend to only lay a single egg during that season.
I used to leave pieces of sausage out for them, but I also had a cat that went outside in the back yard. They were wary, and both the male and female would snap off pine needles from the trees, and drop them near the food, to see if anything reacted. Then, while the female kept watch, the male would swoop down to quickly retrieve a piece of meat. Then they'd switch and the female would take her turn.
While they could hunt as well as eat carrion, they were also fearless, and would deter red-tailed hawks from entering their territory--our house area. I remember them recognizing me and my wife at the time as well, as they would perch on our roof when I'd get home from work, unafraid and curious, and do their purr-like croak, which seemed to be a communication of "be aware" between them. That was usually when I'd go in back and drop a treat for them. We never tried to approach them, and they never came down close to us, but it seemed they didn't regard us as a threat.
We lived side-by-side for many years, until the local power company said the tree they nested in was growing too close to power lines, and they had to cut the top of it off, also removing where the nest was. Sadly, I never saw them after that, as they likely chose a new place to nest.
I often thought about The Hobbit's ravens when I'd see them, and when my ex and I had first started dating I read that novel to her on the enclosed patio in my back yard, when I'd sometimes see the ravens roosting while we read. It was a nice natural touch to the story.
This story made me somewhat emotional for some reason. It was so nice and peaceful, yet melancholic and reminiscent in a beautifully warm way. Thankyou.
Where I live you can see both Crows and Ravens, Ravens while not as numerous are larger and far more majestic than there smaller cousins
Roäc is super chill
Quoth the raven..."Namárië!"
Excellent narrative and voices. I knew next to nothing about the smaller bird races. Or that they talked at all. Excellent stuff
Me hearing dialogue in theatres for the first time, having read the Hobbit, but never the LotR books proper: "Crab 🦀 Hinds from Dublin 🇮🇪??"
Please give us a video on the many languages of Middle-Earth! I still can't believe you haven't covered this topic yet, it is the most fundamental work of Tolkien
I love the ravens! Roäc Son of Carc is a legend!
"and Debbie" lol 😂😂😂😂
You should do a video over the lands outside of middle earth
In J.R.R. Tolkie's plot notes for the second phase of writing The Hobbit, there was no distinction between crows and ravens as ominous birds. When the scounting party went to view the Front Gate Balin did not like the ravens nearby, stating that they looked "like spies of evil". However, when the Company needed to learn of the death of Samaug Tolkien "rehabilitated" the ravens, making them friendly to the Dwarves, and replaced all negative raven-references with crows.
Unless I've missed it, could you do a video maybe the top 5 stories you would like to see get a film adaptation? I'd be interested in your opinion. Thanks and love the videos.
Mewlip video would be so cool!!!
It saddens me how often animals who do nature's dirty work (eating dead bodies) are vilified in literature (vultures, crows, ravens). The world would have been a much more disgusting place without them.
That's true, but the carcasses they leave are just as disgusting.
Egyptian mythology idolized them
@@Enerdhilthey don’t leave carcasses they literally eat them…
Really? That saddens you? There are lots of things to be sad about in this world. And you choose that?
@flintliddon what are you doing watching a fantasy video? Shouldn't you be watching a documentary about all the messed up stuff happening in the world that most of us are powerless to stop?
Nice work dude thanks
What about the Thrush by the gray stone
I have an idea for a new video: what if glorfindel took the ring?

It's interesting how many animals and animal-like creatures talk in Tolkien's Middle-Earth. The Peter Jackson trilogies scaled back on this quite a bit, most notably with the depiction of the Great Eagles. There's also little sense of the wargs' sapience in the films. To be honest, I rather prefer this treatment; the few talking animals seen in the Hobbit films (the spiders and even Smaug) are a bit silly to me. I don't know why the Ents work for me while a talking dragon doesn't.
Dragons are often portrayed in mythology as not only sentient but deeply intelligent, or even spellcasters.
@@rikk319 I'm sure they are, and the talking Smaug is accurate to the book's portrayal. I just found him to be somewhat immersion-shattering, more like a cartoon character than a creature at home in Peter Jackson's live-action Middle-Earth canvas. But it's totally subjective.
George rr Martin totally was inspired "sending a message by raven" from the hobbit
Well, despite Middle-Earth lore, I've had good luck so far with ravens and magpies and quite like them. If your good to them, they're good to you. They're very smart, and worth paying attention to. If they like you, they leave you presents!
Also, your voice overs are magic Matt!🍻
Sometimes I wish the movies would show the animals speak a little bit.
2:00 What is that?
There was recently a leak about an anime movie about lotr scheduled for December this year could you talk about it , it's called the war of the rohirrim

@@SeanCSHConsulting ??? Wym
I miss the old narrator. Lmao 😂
the ravens helped the dwarves in the hobbit
yeah, that's what he talked about - did you watch? lulz
Oh no, ravens are just lil dragons, hoarding shiny
I love the voices you do for the various characters, including the animals! So charming to listen to.
❤ Roac’s voice!
He also does a great Morgoth at 0:30 in his War or Wrath of video and Mandos around 5:38 in his Mandos video
I concur!
His kids must’ve had some great story times as they’ve grown up!
Kind of a missed opportunity not to include Roak in the Hobbit movies, considering Peter Jackson made it a trilogy. Thorin just summoned Dain and his army off- screen. It's not like they couldn't have made Roak work, they made an army of Mumakil work in Return of the King. Besides, I would gladly have left out the pointless Alfrid- filler in favor of this talking raven.
And the Legolas/Tauriel side quest.
@@reneedailey1696 That didn't bother me that much. At least Tauriel was a better written elf heroine than Galadriel in the Rings of Power. Hope Season 2 does her better.
@@stormstrider1990 Personally I hope season 2 never gets made or is atleast the end of it. The whole show is just a sad shambles.
While they didn’t show off sentient ravens, they did mention them returning in greater numbers, so the dwarfs in the movie definitely were aware of them.
it does show thorin interacting with the ravens although its done very subtly
Quoth the Raven. It is interesting how throughout the world the same animals are used to illustrate evil, doom, fear, despair or good, nobility or peace. An unusual idea for a video, but very interesting.
Crows of Unusual Size, eh?
C.O.U.S. then?
I love crows of unusual size. I get some a few times a week.
A veteran of the Great War vilifying crows…..
Makes total sense…..
Even so, they weren't evil creatures. They were simply animals looking for a meal in the barren wasteland, where the most abundant food source were dead soldiers.
@@valentinkambushev4968 Well said 👍
The Norse used to think of the ravens showing up after a battle as the a tool of the valkyries to usher warriors to Valhalla so interesting change in perspectives
@@bearcladxd Norse, like Native Americans, tended to have a neutral or even positive outlook on wildlife, as merely another form of life making their way in the world, alongside humanity.
@@rikk319 tends to happen when your culture is based off of living with the land and nature instead of the idea of dominating/bending everything to your will, but maybe I’m just a hippy lol
7:13 Just when I thought I have heard everything from your vocal range.😂 Good job.
The art is fantastic
I would call birds the children of Manwë with Melian being their great teacher who taught them how to sing.
Ravens are very clever birds. It is never a good idea to anger one.
From what I have heard, they can remember faces.
@@valentinkambushev4968 Not only can they remember faces, they can pass on knowledge of said faces.
If you cross a crow or a raven,, the flock and future generations will remember.
Imagine scaring off a bird and the next day it sh#ts in your coffee😂
@danielloewen2857 That's actually not a laughing matter. Ravens can hold serious grudges. An Indian man once tried to save a baby raven that had fallen from its nest. The baby died, unfortunately, but the ravens didn't care that the man wasn't responsible. For years, they would attack him even time he was out of his home.
@@danielloewen2857 Remember Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven? It is a lot worse than poo in your coffee.
I have a family of crows that land on my porch and squawk for me to come out and feed them bread. In return they warn me of people in sight of my house. They are highly intelligent and can be very friendly if you make an effort to be a friend to them.
“Turn coat wizard”. Very punny!
Turn cloak...
It is curious that you miss the Thrush, who reveals the key-hole to Bilbo and carries the news of Smaug's vulnerability to Bard. Maybe it's just one Thrush (as opposed to the whole of a species) but it is a crucial bird indeed!
You should do a video on the Pass of Caradhras.
yes - yet another part that's cooler in the book
crows can live a long time... long enough to remeber a war that happened 20+ years ago for example and how good of a food source that was. not only that but they can communicate that information to the younger generation of crows so they know what to look for.
doesn't make them evil if the bodies of the fallen can't be buried the birds and the bugs are the ones who will clean it up as best they can they do their part.
Did Aragorn negotiate a treaty with the evil birds or Kentucky fry them?
Awesome, another video
When can we expect a video on Melian the Maia? I'm especially interested in the idea that she was the original leader of the Istari at Cuivienen in later versions of the Legendarium
Yes ⬆️
Great channel me and my wife just started watching
Welcome to the channel! So glad you and your wife are enjoying it!
@@NerdoftheRings can’t stop watching it plus every time you say sky carcass I always laugh. I don’t know why.
Crab lice from Dublin?

What I said when I saw this upload:
“Oooh, this is gonna be gooood.”
I’m pretty sure I always say that🤔
It’s almost like this episode is named “OF Ravens, Crows and Crebain of Ennor” like some sort of lost Silmarillion chapter. Well done my friend!
4:00 I thought it was pronounced "Reth-orn" not "Red-horn" but maybe I misread the appendices? *edit: Similarly, maybe someone can answer why the appendices say to pronounce it "Gandalv" but nobody does?
If not wrong, Mr. Tolkien have good interest about Norse myth, so the importance that raven have in his story is probably deliberate, if not wrong, in Norse myth, raven have great importance. Norse pagan deity Odin, was said to have two raven flying around him, during his wandering, Huginn and Muninn, meaning thought and mind.
👍
The one time I'm hugely disappointed with Tolkien.
I made friends with some crows and they are awesome. Crows and Ravens are the Best birds.
I have just come here this one time. Mate, seeing you get bought by amazon for a favourable review of the Rings Of Power was so distasteful. Im not able to come back to your channel and I just hope you learn your lesson. It was such an impeachment of your character.
A new notr video. One of the highlights of my Saturdays!
Ok, I’m in. Subscribed.
Guys, i need some lore help:
Where can I find source material of second age that tells how Sauron deceived the elves and about the forging of the rings?
I’ve read lotr, hobbit and silmarillion, but it doesn’t seem to have a complete narrative about it
Try the Letters, Unfinished Tales, and the History of Middle-earth.
History of middle earth volumes. Tolkiens son Christopher spent most of his adult life writing them - compiling Tolkiens notes into some organized form.
The Fall of Númenor. It's a compilation of Tolkien's 2nd Age material. It may not have everything you want but Tolkien didn't write as much about the 2nd Age as he did the 1st or 3rd.
It turns out The fall of Númenor is what I was looking for! It has the infos I wanted in a “very short form” I’d say
Thanks for all the replies
👍👍👍
I've always loved crows and ravens.
0:59 woah, buddy what did you mean by that?

i LOVE your crow voice!!!
I finally understand what Legolas said in the first movie. Always thought he said crabeye.
Dude, fantastic crow voice it sounds amazing😂😂😂

Oh I love crows
👍interesting 😊
Ravens & crows are so beautiful tho, I wish they didn’t have such a bad reputation
I would love to see a video about Khand. It’s such a mysterious realm, I know Tolkien himself did not give much info about the land. But a video about Khand and the Variags would be awesome!
watching 54 seconds uploaded. love this guy 🎉
I will never look at a floke of crows the same way again
*murder
I don't recall the ravens even being mentioned in the hobbit movie
I don't know that they're mentioned either but there is a scene where thorin sends one to summon Dain.
@ElijahR2023 you're right I forgot that was in there
gotta say, your raven impression was top notch, best impression ive heard

One of my favorite bits of lore from Tolkien's world, and a reason why I keep so much raven artwork in my writing space and reading nook.
#rooknook
No mention of the thrush?
Dain is pronounced like "Di-in (dine with two syllables)." I don't like it but it is what it is. Just like how I don't like Gloin being "Glo-in" instead of "Gloyn"
