Wildfires, otters, fixing stuff, mad floof, and two very beautiful souls- where else can you get this kind of content on a Sunday? Big love to you all x
Here's to Willie for his ongoing quest to completely refurbish Miss Yolanda and to Sarah for her wire identification skills! Always love to hear educational info about living on Skye, too! Thanks for another great video, you two! Hugs & pats to Jack & Nori! 🥰
Love Richard he reminds me of either a hobbit or a gnome with his cute face and facial hair. He is such a good neighbor. He is magic and comes to help every time you get into trouble Willie.
Sarah’s eyesight is a treasure, that’s why she’s such an incredible artist - of course she can see minuscule amounts of color and render the perfect electrical diagram 😎
1. What, no Richard in the end credits? (Richard - himself...) 2. Fires - in the south of France where I live, wildfires are a big problem (for houses) but interestingly, for the land, it recovers pretty quickly and nature soon makes sure that regrowth happens quickly. Not a reason to discard cigarettes though, obviously! 3. Otters or seals, I couldn't see, but either way it was beautiful 4. Yes, indeed, Willie should keep jumping off camera like a bunny, chipmunk, or whatever. It is hilarious! 5. Sarah is like Mary Poppins - practically perfect in every way!
Wow, is Nori getting big or what? Jack is as handsome as ever. I'm so sorry about the fires on Skye. Hoping for quick regrowth of the heather, bracken & grasses. Sarah, I think those were seals you were watching; they looked grey rather than dark brown, plus they looked larger than otters. Either way, they were super fun to watch splashing about in the loch. The wild horses were stunning to see also. Good job, you, for sorting out the wires on Yolanda so Willie could finish fixing the brake & indicator lights. I liked your necklace in the video closing. It was good to see Richard. 🤙🤙 Greetings from the Tar Heel state of North Carolina! Take care and hang loose! 💙🤙 Give Jack & Nori loads of hugs and ear scratches.
@livingtheskyelife Our children grow up so fast, whether they have two legs, or fur and four legs. I have a son who'll be 29 this year, another son is 24. I can't believe how fast the years have gone! Nori's recall training is going great too. So glad he loves the water as much as his big brother Jack does.
Hello Again ☺. Not shiney or fluid enough for otters, definitely young seals. My late husband Terry and I have watched many otters back in the 80s and 90s on Skye and when you do finally see them you will know the difference. Sending love, light and bright blessings to you both and the fur babies 🐶🐾🐾🐕 xx
I hear that millions of years ago, Scotland's mountains were once part of our Blue Ridge Mountains. It seems strange that a week after Skye's mountains were on fire that our local Blue Ridge Mountains were ablaze. Crazy winds ignited long dead controlled burn piles. Our County is also volunteer firefighters, and they fought like never before. Grateful to the firefighters worldwide. They're a unique breed and brave beyond all belief.
Hey 🙂 for anyone who possibly never watched far enough - these fires are from Falaisger (also known as muirburn. The burning of the heather) and it is done predominantly by land management in scotland from around Oct-April. The intention is to allow for regeneration of the area for wildlife mainly. The trouble is sometimes it gets into deep peat and causes a much larger burn than anticipated or wind catches and it hits areas that werent intended. The practice is meant to be avoidant of certain areas (steep slopes for example). There is a scottish Muirburn code and some courses land managers should be following as well as licence holding. Just thought id add this as I lived in Dunvegan for 4 years and we saw this often from our house over the years!
That was otterly amazing! I'm pretty sure those were 2 otters mating - it is Spring, after all! I remember seeing the beautiful 1969 film- 'Ring Of Bright Water' (you can watch it free on youtube)- about the artist and writer, Gavin Maxwell, who ended up living on Skye - and there is a scene in that film, where Mij his pet otter is frolicking and splashing in the loch, just like that, with a wild female otter. They are such playful animals. What a magical way to start your day.
Glad you pointed out that controlled burning is a traditional way of improving soil fertility, and had been done for generations. Provided it IS controlled carefully it's got to be better than buying in artificial fertilisers. Great varied vlog. Well done.
More lovely time spent watching your lifestyle. You are experiencing and learning so much . Richard is the best kind of friend sharing his extensive knowledge and skills with you. He's a "pay it forward " kind of guy bless him. As you probably know here in Australia we live with the worst kind of bush fires. It really is imperative to learn how to be fire ready and have an evacuation plan. Thanks for sharing the footage and info on Skye's situation. Cheers.
"Not all Heroes wear capes" Shout out to Richard 🤙 Sarah the Electrician, getting Wired in about it. And Willie, our own conservationistic David Attenborough. Another Fantastic episode 👏 👍
Great job on fixing electrical stuff on Yolanda. Sarah will need to put that diagram in the glove box for future reference. You guys are a hoot in the bloopers. Cheers
I have a first, also, and lastly for you. First: That rotary tool that started to smoke,it’s something that happens after a few years, after accumulating dust, best to give it a good blowing down every so often. Plus, those long flexible attachments, they are very hard on the motor, the more coiled up,the more taxing on the tool’s motor it will be. Also: Your friend,Richard. I say this as a mighty compliment to him. He is CLEARLY a Middle Earth Dwarf from the mountain Moria,he comes along once in a while to fix. That’s what the Mighty Dwarves do🤣😅 Lastly: Otters. The Otters(they are not seals, seals don’t make that sound),I cherish them,I hope to be an Otter one day! Sara,if you end up making a painting of an Otter,I would be honored to purchase a print of it. I need an Otter in my home😅
Bush fires can be quite scary. Always have an emergency kit - battery or solar power radio, torch, keep phones charged , rolled towels across the doorway etc
To have otters on your door step. Wow! I've had a passion for otters for decades and was lucky enough to see a mum and her 2 pups recently on Mull. So privileged
Me too - also love Sea Otters. Last year we went all the way to Alaska to see them - cuteness on a whole other level! A bit bigger than the river otters we get in Scotland - and they have back flippers rather than legs so never leave the sea - but they are just as playful. We saw some rescued ones up close in Vancouver Aquarium - gorgeous!
*Sarah yep a long lens would do the job to capture all the wildlife.... 🙂 Boing boing boing boing as Willie pops off camera 🙂 Could it be that one of the many previous owners of the Landrover have wired it up themselves, hence the strange wire colours, as it may not have originally come with a towbar. 🙂nz*
good one i loved watching it.glad the fires did not get to the houses.good job on yolanda the 3 of you. Those otters seem to know spring is in the air .xxx
Liked your bit on muir burns this week. Just thought I’d mention that there are some whole time staff in our highland and island areas and remote rural. Usually a support officer and a station commander looking after several stations and personnel. In some places we have other admin staff to support all crews. I have just recently retired as one of the Station commanders and initially served in an urban area prior to promotion and taking up a rural post. Very interesting and gratifying experience. Take care Dave
Thanks Dave! What an amazing contribution to your area 😊 We actually chatted to someone we work with here on the island, as he used to be in the service and it was him that told us there were no full time firefighters. Although - as you say, there is a whole team working behind the scenes too 😊
Wildfires are frightening wherever they are. In Australia we are very familiar with fires. Sometimes we have controlled burning which escapes and soon gets out of control.
Wild fires are so frightening. We've had several over recent years. The worst took out over 350 homes in one neighborhood. There's nothing you can do, but watch it go up in smoke. I admire the smoke jumpers who fight the fires in mountain locations, but sometimes the winds make the fight so much more difficult. It's heartbreaking. Its too bad the otters didn't come closer, but that's nature for you. They were certainly having fun! Until they're five feet away and standing still, I wouldn't know if its an otter or a seal. 🤷 Colorado is a little short of both critters. Willy, save Sarah's diagram! It may come in handy in the future! See you next week! Blessed Be!
I feel ya! We live in BC, Canada, in the beautiful "Smok'nogan" Valley. Better known as the Okanagan Valley. 😉 Stay safe this wildfire season, they are predicting a doozer in 2024.
My grandparents lived in Portree for some years when I was a baby, not sure how long to be fair but they had a shop in the town. My grandads favourite animal was otters 🦦 so I’m going to say it highly likely that those were otters that you saw. He used to tell me that he had been out to watch the otters. Fingers crossed you get to see more over spring 😊
It takes an artist eye to see the small things! Good job, Sarah! I was thinking, at one point, that the ‘otters’ looked like seals because of the fatter bodies when they jumped, but it’s hard to tell. So glad to see that no people or property was harmed in the fires. We have experienced them in my valley every summer for the past five years. One is still burning underground from last year, in a few areas. We can see the water planes practicing already in the valley for the coming season andI fear that it is something we will be living with now. Stay safe and continue to enjoy your lovely home and adorable pups.
Living rural is the best. My husband and I farm in Australia and share our farm with an abundance of wildlife. Like you there is nothing better than hiding somewhere taking photos and planting a garden to bring the wildlife up to my front door. You will love your new life that will bring new joy everyday. Like you we enjoy the company of 6 cocker spaniels.
Thanks for the Wild discount. I am with you about single-use plastics! After hurricane Sandy in NYC our entire neighborhood soccer field was covered with plastic bottles washed up from the Hudson River. I was so shocked that I decided then and there never to buy water in a plastic bottle again! And now I'm moving forward on relinquishing plastic deodorant holders. Great idea and great offer.
I enjoy seeing all your wildlife. I don't know what was in the water but it was nice to watch them. I am glad the fires were stopped before getting to homes. Those horses are majestic. Thanks for sharing them. The dogs are as cute as ever. Yay for Richard!
Great Stuff! has put a smile on ma face. Willie's horrible English Hoy Paloy accent.😆 I loved it. Nae wee Fifer in this lad. Dae I hive tae call you Sir? Sarah, ma twa bobs are on Otters. When you paint the otters I want to order 1. of the Hieland coo, one of the Heiland pony and one of the non -heiland otter🤭 What a set that will be. Having got me Skye life fix i am good to go for another week. All is well in South Carolina.
We have planned burn off's certain times of the year in Australia and they often get out of hand is the wind suddenly changes, but most bad fires are caused by lightning or idiots starting them. 💕🇦🇺
Identifying wires? Time for a multimeter Willie!! Take no time to work out which is which! Even just a basic test lamp will help you go through and identify each wire's purpose. That and a willing helper to press brakes, turn lights on and off etc etc.. Be fine in no time!! ;)
I live in northern New Mexico, USA. We worry about wildfire all of the time. My town, Los Alamos, has had to be evacuated twice since 2000. And while I get tired of the cold and snow, which can continue until June, it is great for preventing fire. We now have a policy of Ready, Set, Go in case of fires. Two years ago we stayed in the Set stage for two weeks.
I hear ya, Jazdia...there's nothing like a wildfire threat to make you aware of your dearest priorities right? I'm in above Taos in the forested area...still have PTSD from the last mega wildfire 🤪 It's nice to know that the Isle of Skye is safe now too!
@@crystalclear5684 *waves hand north* Hi, neighbor! I love the mountains, but not the cold. We're supposed to have high winds tomorrow, with gusts up to 80mph. So I'm just praying that no telephone poles get knocked over, which is what happened in 2011. They opened the town up too quickly, because there were still fires on the mountains surrounding the town when I drove back.
Willie and Sarah, Years ago I lived in the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey. We had controlled burning of the undergrowth because wildfires in the past had destroyed many areas. I had a friend in high school who lost he Mother ad Brother in one, And I knew Eddy Parker from Parkerstown whose Father died in a wildfire. The Pine Barrens have thrived in spite of the fires, wild or controlled. Cheers, Rik Spector
Really enjoyed this video saved it to watch after teatime. Skye is a beautiful place and your lovely cottage by the beach looks beautiful too. We just had a few days in and around glencoe and oban it was lovely . I think they maybe did look like otters but it was hard to tell . Thanks for the great video 😊
Oh wow, that fire was really close to these houses! I'm so glad it stopped there and nothing was damaged. That must have been so scary for the people living there! I'm not surprised Richard is always wearing sunglasses. He clearly needs them so he can throw all this shade at you for your lack of suitable tools. 😂 He is a hero for always coming to your aid, though. If it wasn't for the fire risk and the need for people willing to camp out on mountains year-round, I would suggest building some beacons between your house and his so you can call for his aid in style. Well done Sarah on figuring out the colours of the wires! How odd that they were bicoloured in the first place. I always love your bloopers at the end!
Richard of all trades to the rescue🦸♂Another great fun video. Anticipating ramp and mushroom season. The morels are popping here in Indiana US. Thank you for sharing your lives and the beautiful world around you. Hugs to Jack and Nori.
Next time you go to Portree or Broadford, buy yourself a 12 volt test probe. Makes things much easier trying to work out wiring. And some spare fuses! Nori certainly has taken to the water.
So glad that you both are safe and wee jack and nori to . Hope nobody didn’t get hurt or they was no wild animals nearby there at the time . Lovely to see the horse still around 🐴🐴 . I think you saw two baby seals 😊 . It’s great to see Richard comes to help you what a wonderful friend he is 😍🤘. Take care and big hugs to wee jack and nori 🐶🐾🦴🐶🐾🦴💖💖
Hello Willie & Sarah! We truly enjoy your YT posts and have not missed a single one. The WILD information provided in this current episode inspired us to initiate a subscription for deodorant and soap. For the record, we're located in Bangor, Maine (spring/summer in the northeast of the US) or Rio Rancho, New Mexico (fall/winter in the southwest of the US). Hugs & smiles...🤗!
Another enjoyable video! Never a dull moment on the Isle of Skye, The fires looked very scary, thankfully they didn’t affect your property! Loved watching the sea life (otters or seals) very interesting! 👍😁
We practice controlled burning here in Western Australia, for the same reasons you have. The burns are to remove the undergrowth in our bush lands so that they are least likely to create more devastating fires. The dangerous fires we do experience are from either arsonists or lightning strike. While we experience one or two fires in and around Perth they are not as devastating as the ones experienced in the eastern states, as they don’t have this practice, much to the dismay of the traditional landowners.😢
Another series of work days at Skye Life Cottage, highlighted by a visit from Richard. I believe you have a pair of otters Sarah. Hope you get that zoom lens soon. Maybe Willie will lend you his. The controlled burn is a good safety practice. The lush new growth will be wonderful. The wild horses approve of you visiting (especially when you leave). Someone mentioned saving the drawing Sarah did of the wiring… good idea! See you next week 😎🇨🇦😎
Hi, great to see some of your local wildlife. A good tip for seeing if they're otters or seals is when they dive (I'm watching this on a phone so can't really tell from the footage). Usually if it's an otter you'll see the tail flick up briefly before disappearing, whereas with seals they just tend to disappear underwater. Another good tip for getting close to them is to watch where they're going and get ahead of them and wait (moving while they're underwater). They usually know you're there, but will often not be too bothered if you're sitting still and they're in the water.
Amazing to see the wild horses and the baby seals. I have been enjoying your videos for quite some time. Appreciate your talents and gifting!!! Thanks for sharing your adventures on Skye. - Ontario Canada
I live in British Columbia, Canada, and used to live in Alberta, next door. Last summer, the forest fires were the worst in our history. The wild fires in Alberta continued to burn underground all winter despite well below freezing temperatures (-30-40 C), and heavy snows. Several of our communities suffered complete burn destruction last summer, entire homes, businesses , and contents destroyed. I’m very sad to hear that fires have struck Sky. I pray that forest management is better there, and that you and your pups are well away from any future fires. Be sure to return to the burn sites later in the summer, there should be incredible new growth and gorgeous alpine and wild flowers, there, which is one benefit of wild fires. Love your videos!
I live in the Okanagan area of British Columbia and every year we experience wildfires.Last year was horrendous and unfortunately they are mostly human caused along with lightening.
These fires are caused by muirburn (aka burning of the heather) and it is indeed to regenerate the area for wildlife mainly. The trouble is sometimes it gets into deep peat and causes a much larger burn than anticipated. Those burning are also meant to be avoidant of certain areas (steep slopes for example). There is a Muirburn code and courses land managers should be following.
Another week and more adventures. Thank you for keeping us up to date on Skye. You never know what you may find by exploring the fire area. Amazing how we always have renewal--keep an eye out and stay safe.
Hi guys hats of to you willie for trying to do the trye, then ure good pal comes to the rescue love him🤙and remember listen next time.😂 nori loves the water now just dives in. Proud of you sarah for helping willie with the wiring, you help each other out, mark did that 1 time on his own and the next thing i know is him banging on the front window with his head as i looked there was a snapped drill bit through his finger blood all over the place, barred now doing anything with a drill bit😂.we're going for young seals amazing to watch anyways all wild life is.❤xxx
Well done again with your video, it’s always good to see. Aren’t you lucky to have Richard as a helpful friend? I think you should make sure you keep Sarah’s paperwork for rewiring the towing plug in case you need it again. I’d keep it with other papers relating to Yolanda. We can all hope soon Sarah will get to photo otters and make some beautiful artwork. 🤞

Willie that was an excellent David Attenborough.😂
I laughed out loud! Perfect- from an American perspective...😂🤣🤣🤣
The best thing about you guys getting the Land Rover is all the additional Richard appearances. He's brilliant
1. What, no Richard in the end credits? (Richard - himself...)
2. Fires - in the south of France where I live, wildfires are a big problem (for houses) but interestingly, for the land, it recovers pretty quickly and nature soon makes sure that regrowth happens quickly. Not a reason to discard cigarettes though, obviously!

Richard to the rescue . Another great video.
Ahh we hope so too!! 🤞🤞🤞
Ah amazing! We try and reduce it where we can, but it’s so hard sometimes!
I enjoy seeing all your wildlife. I don't know what was in the water but it was nice to watch them. I am glad the fires were stopped before getting to homes. Those horses are majestic. Thanks for sharing them. The dogs are as cute as ever. Yay for Richard!
Like your Videos.Nice to see you all.Have a nice week.Best wishes to you.Stay save❤😊
Happy Sunday everyone 😊
We have planned burn off's certain times of the year in Australia and they often get out of hand is the wind suddenly changes, but most bad fires are caused by lightning or idiots starting them. 💕🇦🇺
Hi Willie and Sarah. Interesting video, I love all the filming of your lovely house and nature right outside your door. Blessings 🙏🌷🌿🐕🇺🇸
Thanks Guadalupe! So glad you’re enjoying the videos still 😊
Well done for spotting the otters.
Identifying wires? Time for a multimeter Willie!! Take no time to work out which is which! Even just a basic test lamp will help you go through and identify each wire's purpose. That and a willing helper to press brakes, turn lights on and off etc etc.. Be fine in no time!! ;)
We visited Skye in September. We loved it!
I'm in above Taos in the forested area...still have PTSD from the last mega wildfire 🤪
It's nice to know that the Isle of Skye is safe now too!
Willie and Sarah,
Years ago I lived in the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey.
We had controlled burning of the undergrowth because wildfires in the past had destroyed many areas.
I had a friend in high school who lost he Mother ad Brother in one,
And I knew Eddy Parker from Parkerstown whose Father died in a wildfire.
The Pine Barrens have thrived in spite of the fires, wild or controlled.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Good Attenborough impression Willie!!
The shape of the heads suggests seals to me. Another great video 👍
At a guess l would say grey seals as the heads looked to big to be otters. I'm glad my name sake could help you once again. Best wishes to you all ❤
Really enjoyed this video saved it to watch after teatime. Skye is a beautiful place and your lovely cottage by the beach looks beautiful too. We just had a few days in and around glencoe and oban it was lovely . I think they maybe did look like otters but it was hard to tell . Thanks for the great video 😊
West coast of Canada. Definitely otters from my vantage point. Tails 😊
We love you Richard x
Oh wow, that fire was really close to these houses! I'm so glad it stopped there and nothing was damaged. That must have been so scary for the people living there!
I'm not surprised Richard is always wearing sunglasses. He clearly needs them so he can throw all this shade at you for your lack of suitable tools. 😂
He is a hero for always coming to your aid, though.
Jealous of your morels!
Everyone needs a Richard in their life! ❤
Beautiful pasttime: mudlarking
Hello Willie & Sarah! We truly enjoy your YT posts and have not missed a single one. The WILD information provided in this current episode inspired us to initiate a subscription for deodorant and soap. For the record, we're located in Bangor, Maine (spring/summer in the northeast of the US) or Rio Rancho, New Mexico (fall/winter in the southwest of the US). Hugs & smiles...🤗!
Ah amazing!! Let us know how you get on with it 😊👍
Another enjoyable video!
Great job Sarah and Willie. I also zoomed in the otters. Love their frolicking.
The wax sealant that you used on the underbody would help to keep that new plug and the wires in good condition.
In Ireland they burn the Gorse and sometimes it burns out of control and people have to leave their homes. Good to see Richard again. ❤
Wonderful guys; as always from Co Antrim coast, not too far away. The Giant says hi
I'm willing to bet that it's breeding season and they are re establishing their bonds.
I think the otters are getting ready to mate 😅
Hi, great to see some of your local wildlife. A good tip for seeing if they're otters or seals is when they dive (I'm watching this on a phone so can't really tell from the footage). Usually if it's an otter you'll see the tail flick up briefly before disappearing, whereas with seals they just tend to disappear underwater. Another good tip for getting close to them is to watch where they're going and get ahead of them and wait (moving while they're underwater). They usually know you're there, but will often not be too bothered if you're sitting still and they're in the water.
Wildfires are scary. Glad y’all are okay(pups too). Thank goodness for friends like Richard. Crossing my fingers an otter poses soon .
The Attenborough! Love it!!
Oh gosh - that sounds very frightening! Hopefully they won’t be so bad if they happen again.
here in Australia we have controlled burns as the under growth gets so thick and we have some terrific fires
It's time you had a line and those pots in the water Wullie...
Wildlife fires this time of year? dang. Glad everyone is ok. Ahhh got to the end, it makes sense now.
