I assume you gotta use their top vent. I want to add a fan in a regular vent location. Two issues, it is a 14x14 regular Camco vent in a new Winnebago. Also, VERY close to front curve and the Fantastic and Maxx fans are bigger. How many inches does the front of the vent extend from the 14" opening? Approximately is good, no need to go up there and remove outer cover. Thanks Ray...
It looked like a ball bearing on the fan's motor shaft. "Sealed" ball bearings eventually use up their grease supply and go dry. Squirting silicone oil into the bearing may help for a while until the silicone evaporates, too. I used to work at a vacuum cleaner repair shop. On rebuilt vacs which the manager did not want to spend any money on, we re-greased dry motor ball bearings (if they were easily accessible and not damaged). The black plastic side plate can be pried off and the bearing repacked. This will double its life and save the cost of buying a new motor. With the fan's motor case welded together, the rear bearing is inaccessible. However, it is usually the front bearing that fails first since it carries the weight of the fan and motor armature. (Note: The squeak could also be coming from the motor brushes if it is not brushless.)
I have 2 of these squeaky fans to repair. I have never had good luck with silicon lube lasting very long. I will use my favorite lube, triflow. Thanks for showing procedure to get to the motor, perfe
My luck I take a screw out I strip it, the plastic flange at another location cracks, the wire harness breaks when I remove it. Etc.. you have more courage than me ray!
I had the same issue with both of ours. Since it was in service the third year, Dometic sent replacements at no cost, but I had to pay about $15 in shipping. If it is under two years, they pick up the shipping. Great service from a Dometic!
The original FanTastic Fan company used to have a lifetime parts warranty, then they got acquired by Atwood 2010 and they stopped that, then Atwood was bought by Dometic. I have the Atwood version. I've found the fan on eTrailer for $35 so not too bad. I'll give Dometic a call if the squeak continues, see what they might do. Cheers, Ray
I won't look at my fan in my 5th wheel the same anymore. I kind of give it the snake eye every once and a while wondering just what is all involved to make that thing tick. Good stuff, very informational 👍.
I had same sound when brand new, I unscrewed and dropped some T9 Boshield Lube and ok since one 1/2 year. Just cleaned my two, same model. I Took the fan fins part off from the trailer by wiggleling it and pulling. Than on the roof, loosened the bottom screw of the Hinge than undo the top screw, the lid canteen be freed and cleaned without undoing the hinge. I did not want to cut the wires so I brought all cleaning gear-lube-Plastic protectant on the roof :-0) I wish it had connectors that clip on, I am not electrically inclined. So tooth brush and Q-tips and all,, I then put plastic protectant from UV Like M303 or Protect All or else on top of the Fantastic Fan Covers. I find the bugs don't stick so much, I put all back together and re-screw the fans fins part from inside the trailer. Thanks for this Video Ray I always love to see the cleanness of your roof, while I was up there I I tried to turn white my dirty silicone spots.
When I took mine apart to add a PWM speed controller, i took it apart from the inside (bottom side), i was able to access all the wire connectors there and unplug the wires without cutting them. Also, adding a PWM controller is an easy way to save power while boondocking, it will let you adjust your fan to many more increments than just the 3 settings it comes with, and its more efficient because the original speed controller is just a series of resistors.
Next time you have to reattach a wire that might end up needing to be undone again use a male and female spade or bayonet connectors. Makes it easier down the road. Thanks for the State Park info from last video.
Actually, they are an old Xcelite pair. I have quite a few of their pliers and cutters from my electronics repair days. Them and Klien were what I mainly used. Cheers, Ray
For years I've used a teflon lube from Radio Shack (64-2301a) for PC CPU and Power Supply fans. It's brought dead seized fans back to life. Once lubed I've never had to mess with them again. These were systems that ran 24/7. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they carry it anymore. I've seen teflon lube on Amazon DuPont but haven't tried it as I still have enough to last me a long time.
Ray Keep a close eye on the motor. When the bearings start to get noisy and squeaky. The next thing that can happen is the motor will seize up. The normal issue with sealed motor of that kind is the bearing opposite the shaft is failing.
Thanks for the review of the fan. With the price of the 802250, I'm thinking the motor should last longer than three years. You make or break a sale, when I'm thinking about an upgrade. So far I have been having good luck with things I've seen on your videos. Your the first place I go when looking at repairing or replacing. I would email Fantastic Fan, I bet they give you a new motor.
You're welcome, In the old days pre 21013 Fantastic Fans had a lifetime warranty, really made it a great product and reputation as they were really good about honoring the warranty, but the small company was bought out by Atwood a little before I bought my fan and they quit the lifetime warranty deal. Looks like etrailer has the motor replacement kit for $35, so not too bad. www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Fantastic-Vent/FVK8017-00.html Cheers, Ray
Good video. Seems like 3inOne oil would be the preferred lube for a squeaking bearing. I don’t think liquid silicone is an appropriate bearing lubricant.
Ray, you seem to be totally confident on your roof. Aside from falling off, its scares me to think of breaking something or tearing the rubber by being up there. Any info or words of wisdom about roof walking on a 5th wheel would be awesome!
I make sure to wear soft-soled flat shoes and walk gingerly and be wary of tripping over vents and things. Depends on what kind of board has been used for the roof, ours has 3/8ths so is pretty strong, I'm 195 lbs and its never been a problem, usually, if there is a ladder attached OEM its a good indication of it being a walk on the roof. The rubber is really strong, stands up well short of piercing or slicing it with a sharp object. Cheers, Ray
You're welcome, we usually start to slowly head back in April, usually cross the border on the first week of May, so have a while yet. Going good, the weather is starting to warm up.
Hi Ray, We love our Fantastic Fans, if we ever get a new trailer those are the top of the list to install. Had them on our last two campers. What do you use to clean the crank up lid and also the the white Fantastic vent cover itself? That view from the inside after putting everything back together was sparking! Outside RV plastic seems to be a pain. Thanks again for all your videos!! That squeak would drive me nuts too.
Thank you Ray for another helpful how to video! Will that fan fit in a standard vent /fan hole? I'd like to replace the fan in my bathroom with one, or maybe a vortex fan.
Yes, my roof vents are the standard size, The difference is the Fantastic fan is a little harder to install as you have to remove the old roof vent - www.loveyourrv.com/installing-fantastic-vent-fan-rv/ versus the Vortex that installs into the existing vent. The Hengs Vortex amzn.to/2TcgSUs is cheaper and easier to install but Fantastic is a little better quality, IMHO. Cheers, Ray
I’ve just bought a 05 diesel pusher and I’m going to put eternabond on the roof how has yours held up over time and should I remove the caulk around the sky lights and then put the tape down or put the tape directly over the caulk?
Here is a review update I did summer 2017 - www.loveyourrv.com/rv-roof-repair-eternabond-review/ Not much has changed since then, no leaks and still happy, basically no maintenance has been required. My OEM Dicor lap sealant was still in good shape so decided to leave it. I used a solvent to clean it really well. Acetone works or mineral spirits if you're careful not to get on the rubber roof too much. Once I had the sealant layer looking like new again, no dirt at all. I taped right over it. The 4-inch Eternabond is wide enough to cover the sealant and overlap on both sides. Cheers! Ray
It is made of metal much like a meat thermometer so didn't do anything special. I just used Windex and paper towels to clean up pretty well everything but the fan blades and bug screen. Since they could be removed I cleaned those with soapy water in the sink and rinsed. Cheers, Ray
Hello Ray I recently installed a Fantastic fan in my 5thwheel and had thought of wiring it on a separate circuit along with the solar that would power it went it was in storage to keep this insides cooler with the rest of the rig's power was off, I live in Arizona and my 5thwheel might sit in storage for a month so before being used. What are your thought on this?
Ray, Great video! Id on't know if you respond to comments/questions but here goes. I have been manually opening & closing my fnatastic fan all of the time. Today -the cover will not open. I don't want to force it - I was on the roof and the cover didn't seem to be stuck on anything but it wouldn't move either. The opening switch moves the switch around like I was manually opening it but the cover doesn't move. Any suggestions? Avion86 Kieth
I'm not too sure how the remote controlled ones work as mine is just a manual opening in one. It has a turn knob. I guess the shaft could seize if corrosion had time to build up. Otherwise its a pretty simple mechanical setup.
I had to change the plastic piece that the motor that opens and close the cover on the roof is holding in place. It broke because I think the cover was sticking to the seal. My problem is that when I am connecting the 2 wires to the cover motor IT IS TURNING ? So I can't not install it.
Hi Ray , i just took mine apart today as well, it ws dirty and slightly rubbing against the sides, found that the bow tie shaped brace was broken in a few spots , never had a problem until i installed lithium batteries , im curious if the extra voltage could cause extra torque on the motor cousing the fan base to crack ? what are your thoughts ? would be a good subject to talk about, 13.4 volts for 12volt appliances
I have a question for you Ray solar panels just bought Noma 100 W solar panels x2 it came with a 30 amp charge controller how would I hook up to in parallel both cables go to the controller or do I need to put a Y in there .
With my Renogy kit, I used the MC4 Y connectors to turn the four wires into two Example - amzn.to/2TbZ6kc but you could run all the cables back to the controller and attach them there. Some people will install a junction box on the roof.
Thanks Ray yeah I was thinking to just run in both sets of wires to the solar charge controller and using them as portable set .want to use a piano hinge and attach them together and fold them up when not in use.
I have just taken the cover off and sprayed WD40 in the bearing area. Didn't even disconnect the power. I also have replaced the motor on older ones. They're not expensive at all.
As with the liquid silicone Ray used, WD-40 is not an appropriate lube for bearings. It mostly just cleans and displaces moisture. 3inOne oil will probably work best in this application. It lubricates and dissolves rust and corrosion.
Ya ALMOST got it.... always waterproof your wire repair. You used a shrink connector but didn't heat it up, making it a waterproof connection. Otherwise, good information!

@@bobcole3852 I'm pretty sure will work with a regular vent cover, the Fantastic Vent is for better airflow.
I love that you didnt edit out the screw you missed. Keep it real, and I will keep watching. Great job.

The music as you commence reassembly perfectly matched my thoughts of how I would feel in that situation!
Loved the addition of watching you work with the music. Great job on the edit. Keep us up to date on how the fan is working/not
I put the chuck of the drill on the fan shaft and slowly spin the shaft will adding the silicon.
Thanks. I just finished tearing my FanTasticVent apart because of a broken fuse adapter. This gives me courage to tackle more required maintenance.
Thanks Ray. Mine was squeaking but Dometic replaced it for free because it was within the 2 year warranty :-))
WOW, I could feel the breeze too when you turned it up. Nice job.
I have 2 of these squeaky fans to repair. I have never had good luck with silicon lube lasting very long. I will use my favorite lube, triflow. Thanks for showing procedure to get to the motor, perfe

Your videos are always so easy to follow. Thank you for continued info. Loved the music and the squeak sounded like birds to me 😩😂
great job ...judging by the noise try to open the engine and replace the lower internal bearing which is probably oxidized and making noise
Good luck with that, good information
Ray

I'm with you squeaks and rattles drive me bonkers...my spare parts/tool box is also full of "Thingamadoies" of various types. 😜😁
Thanks again Ray!
I was hoping I could take it apart while inside as I’m a bit afraid of falling off my grooming van. 😬

Great video :)
Did the music come from a 60s Disney movie?😉 I was waiting for Dean Jones (Love Bug) to show up. It did make me smile. Good to know about those fans.
It's from a series called QUIRKY ORCHESTRA :)player.epidemicsound.com/series/1733/

I've had lithium batteries for about 5 years now and hasn't been an issue, my fans and motors run way better! :)
Did the squeak stop in the long run? I have the same squeak in one of my motors. Wondering if it's serviceable.
No, its still there sometimes

Maybe a spray lithium grease would do it.
The squeak sounded like a cricket. Kind of homey to me:)
So i am guessing you don't like crickets at night either?. LOL
I like crickets but random, not repetitive. :)
That product is ungodly over priced, imo. For what it cost and for me to buy one it would have to be a lot quieter than it is. Those that have one are happy with it so that's all that counts, right?
Yes, I see you can buy the fan motor and blades for $35, I guess the rest is for the custom mounting solution and controls. Everything fits just right. I'm surprised there isn't a knock-off product for much less.
There is the Heng's Vortex II for around $50. - Not temp controlled, but it has 5 speeds I think and moves a lot of air. And it also reverses.
I'm so deaf now I can't hear the squeak.
