Integrating his own poetry into the lyrics is what really gets me about To Hell and Back. Just such a well done song, trying to honor everything he achieved, even the musical allusion to his movies.

1 thing I wanna point out is that he was in the *328th* not the *338th* , this was an error when recording, when doing live performances they correctly say *328th* . The 338th is part of the 85th Infantry Division.
This song was the only time I caught Sabaton doing an OOPS. "Joined the ranks as a private assigned to 338th" should be "328th" for York's regiment in the 82nd. Credit where credit is due, they realized their mistake and corrected it in their Live performances. They're still my favorite band. 🤘😁🍺

One of my favorite minor anecdotes about this song is that the Alvin York memorial held a commemoration ceremony honoring his service, and Sabaton sent a signed copy of the album which is now framed in the museum. At the ceremony they presented the signed album to the family, which included several descendants and also I believe York's son, and they listened to the song. Imagine your dad does something really cool 100 years ago and you get to hear a metal band from Sweden right a song about your dad.
Can you do Devil Dogs? Really good song talking about the Marines and the Battle of Belleau Wood, and how they gained their nickname of "Teufel Hunden" - Devil Dog.

I had never heard this song before.
It gave me chills and brought a tear or two to my eye.

Sad as the content of the story is, in a way it is really impressive what the guy attempted to do. Making that one of the history episodes which stuck to me the most. And to me the song just like Witold underappreciated
Another fact is that Witold Pilecki's report was the first, that informed Allies about the Holocaust
I've been a history nut since I was a kid. Mostly Arthurian legends and WW2. I joined the Army partly to learn what it was to be a soldier so I could understand the history I read better. I learn something new everyday and I love it.
Knowing Sgt York's story, it's incredible to me how he had to make a decision: fight or die. He wrestled with his faith up to that one point. from what I understand, the "turning point" was when he saw friends of his being cut down by machine guns. I can imagine him, shaking with anger and fear. In his head, saying to himself "what do I do?" his conflict between non-violence and faith in God vs taking action against an enemy who will kill him and his friends.....and springs into action to save his men.

The 82d is actually on an 18 hr and wheels up constant readiness, just FYI the reason why they are The All Americans, is because they were the first Airborne unit that actually had members from every state and background. Former and very proud member of the 80 deuce. Airborne ALL THE WAY!!!!!
No, they got the nickname in WW1 because while most units were raised from National Guard units and were quite regional, some PR type noticed the 82 Infantry had soldiers from every state and a story was written in the papers.

I just realised that with the M1911 only holding 7+1 bullets, York was either really good at making his shots count - or he managed to reload while being charged. Impressive either way.
Smashed the like button :) Awesome content, awesome music. Joakim`s voice packs a punch, rarely you hear a metal singer with this deep voice. Most of them are high pitched.
Sabaton did quite a few songs about individual people, and all of them are great. For example there's 'the red baron' (which you already covered), 'to hell and back' about Audrey Murphy, 'white death' about, well, the withe death (I think his actual name was samu häya), 'soldier of three armies' about lauri törni and 'inmate 4859' about witold pileki. There's also 'Hearts of iron' which is more or less about Walter wenck and the whole carolus Rex Album where everything is about the rise and fall of Karl the XII of Sweden.

Very good comment on the fact that historian may not know something, and some people are suprised by this - one of first things we were literraly told at the beginning of our course (also did history studies :)), was that we should be familiar with basics of most, but be dedicated to some specific areas of our true interest, if we want to be reliable and serious historians and researchers.

I can barley name facts about the civil war, however ask me anything regarding the European theatre in wwii and to an extent the pacific theatre I can answer. Great speech on that and I’m looking forward to more reaction videos. As well if you do do the last stand it’s a great song music wise. Idk a whole lot about the actual events that it’s based on though

Another fact about them holder the Belgian border was that they had a second order from the command center and it was basically to retreat but since that the Germans cut off their communications and never reached the 40 who were fighting

i like that the say ¨its 82nd all the way death from above what they now say¨ because when they changed to 82 air borne divison they also changed their motto from ¨all the way¨ to death form above

If I remember right, I believe York was actually a conscientious objector and did not want to get involve in the war, but his status was denied and had to enlist. I believe there was an incident in his younger life where maybe a friend or family member was killed and he had sworn off violence as a result going from being a rowdy drunk to a pacifist up until the war.

I highly recommend the song "Panzerkampf" about the Battle of Prokhorovka (Part of the Battle of Kursk, the largest Tank Battle in history)
One of the things I love about this song if how they note the changes of the 82nd's motto. "82nd All the Way. Death from Above what they now say."
I know quite a few boys from the 82nd from when I was in, and they still treat York like he was God's second son haha.
Last night I had watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and I couldn't help but notice the main heroine had a few things in common with Sgt. York.
*Spoiler warning!*
They are both revered as larger than life heroes by their respective peoples and are known to hold a strong pacifist ideology. There was also a moment in each of their stories when they witnessed someone near to them die which made them SNAP! For Nausicaa early in the film, the sight of her bedridden father, lying on the floor with several stab wounds, sent her into a fit of fury and she killed four of the invading soldiers before coming to her senses in absolute shock and horror of everything that happened at that point. A close friend of York's was shot and killed right in front of him which led to the machine gun nest feat.
The crazy part about killing 6 charging germans with a 1911 is that a 1911 only holds 7 rounds.

Im retired 82nd ABN....as the story goes during WWI (If memory serves) it was found that in the infantry unit that there were men from every state and territory at the time and hence the term All American was born .
Just to add a little of what I know about York, he was a avid hunter and a freaking amazing marksman, and he often hunted turkey in Tennessee. Now, when you hunt a flock of turkeys you have to shoot them in a certain order so that the turkeys don't know they are getting shot at. York said he did the same tactic when the six Germans charged him. He said "I had to shoot the last one in line first, then the next, then the next, so they didn't know they was being hit. That way I could get 'em all". Pretty interesting I thought.
Imagine the presence of mind in that situation to know to do that. Fascinating.

My grandfather was in the 82nd and gave me his AA patch. One of my most treasured possessions.
He told me that he and a friend joined the Army to get into the 101st Airborne, they really wanted the screaming eagle patch. His friend was put in the 101st while he was put in the 82nd.
Hill 223 refers to its surveyed height, above sea level in meters. Naming hills after their elevation is a common military practice.

I unfortunately know very little of WW1 and even less of York - so hopefully I can learn more in the comments.
I read, but I cant quote because frankly I'm too lazy to cite right now. But when York came back to the states and started doing his tour he was asked how he capped all 6 of those Germans charging him and he said something to the affect of "Well back home when you go on a turkey shoot you start with the last turkey, because the lead turkeys wont see their friends fall and they'll continue to charge instead of running away"
Interesting little tidbit hiding in the song. The 82 infantry (All American)'s motto was "All the Way." When they became the 82 airborne, they changed their motto to "Death From Above." Adds a little bit of meaning to the bridge. It's also interesting that he had to be talked out of being a conscientious objector before his famous mission. You might want to do "Battle of Bull" about Sgt. Leslie "Bull" Allen (absolutely a conscientious objector) or "Cliffs of Gallipoli" which is more of a tribute instead of a song about the battle.
As a Marine I recommend Devil Dogs, I'd love to see you react to that song and your perspective
You said you were from northeast Ohio. Sabaton has a video for devil dogs and some of the clips are from their show in Cleveland. Also shows the uss cod. Don’t know if it’s the best for a reaction but could be cool to check out on your own time. Great video btw.
The last battle is mind blowing and I don't know why it hasn't been made into a movie. I can't say more without ruining it. Don't forget that sabaton has a history chanel that explains the events behind the songs.

I remember me and the men's fellowship at church watched the movie "Sergeant York" which was based upon his life, him coming to faith in God and Christ, and his heroic feats during his service in WW1. Very powerful movie, one of my favorites.

You should visit York's home sometime. The park rangers there built a demonstration World War i trench on the property and use it for programs about World War I.
Another cool York story is that one of the conditions for use of his story for the movie was that he would be played by Gary Cooper. Cooper agreed and won the Oscar for Best Actor for it. One day York visited the set and saw Cooper smoking a cigarette. York immediately had production halted until Cooper apologized. They have the apology on display in York's house (it's an autographed publicity photo of Cooper as York with the apology on it) and they show it as part of the tour.
101st is Air Assault today. But both can jump. Along with my favorite US Army Division, the glorious 10th Mountain , out of Ft. Drum , NY.

The All Americans predates it being an airborne division. If I remember right, it referred to when it was first formed in WW1 it had members from all 48 states.
You need to do "Inmate 4859".
Its about Witold Pilecki, he went to auschwitz (under a different name) and organized a resistance group. Then, he could flew from auschwitz and wanted to inform the allies about what happens there.
The western allies didn't believe him and the soviets thought he was a traitor.
On his flight, he met the man, whose name he took to be undercover in auschwitz and afterwards this man was captured and tortured.
Amazing story, that sadly only a few know about.
Another great song would be "The last Battle" which is about the Battle of Castle Itter (Tirol, Austria, aka the area where i grew up).
After hitler's death, soldiers of the Wehrmacht, Amercians and Austrian resistance fighters grouped up to fight against the WaffenSS which were hiding themself and french prisoners from dachau (former cc) in the castle.
This was the only time, americans and germans fought together (against other germans). Also, it shows that not all Wehrmacht Soldiers were nazis.
Inmate 4859 is a cracking song. Loving your stuff mate!
My fave is the 1st work of Sabaton, I heard. "Back In Control". About 1982 South Atlantic crisis. We know it as The Falklands War, or just Falklands. Argentines call it Islas Malvinas. But its Falklands Islands. I kind of wish "Iron Lady" film dealt more with that in detail. Maybe a followup , film concentrating on South Atlantic Crisis. My request is for OP to cover this topic.

My recommendation would be Sabaton's '' Smoking Snakes '' it's about 3 Brazillian FEB Soldiers who fought against a bigger number of wehrmacht soldiers until they ran out of ammo. When they did, the fixed their bayonets and charged at the Group of Enemy Soldiers. Because of the Bravery of the Soldiers, the germans buried them with a cross saying '' Drei Brasilianische Helden '' (Three Braziliian Heroes)

I feel like you have to do The Lost Battalion next seeing how it covers the story of another US division during this same offensive. If I remember right to I believe the story of York was actually not well known until well after the war due to being over shadowed by the story of the Lost Battalion.

3:07 fun fact, that image is Chattanooga off of Lookout Mountain above Moccasin Bend and I know that as that image is the seal of the city among being one of the most common images I see around here. I'd actually like to see Sabaton do the old song "Battle Above the Clouds", they can pull it off pretty easily.

please do resist and bite ! It's about a small belgian force who went up against the entire invading german force in 1940 and were suprisingly effective. Also the song is super catchy !
If I remember right he was actually a Corporal when he did his historic and Heroic run. He became a Seargent.
I served in the 325th Airborne infantry regiment of the 82nd Airborne Div for 9 years including two combat deployments... I stood on the shoulders of giants.... AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!
Colonel MacArthur (future 5 Star) was All American (Americal) 82 Division Chief Of Staff and G3 Operations Officer. General John J. Pershing was CINC American Expeditionary Force.
MacArthur was chief of staff of the 42nd Division, not 82nd. He was promoted to Brigadier General in June 1918. After that he commanded the 84th Infantry Brigade.

He talked about taking those Germans out, as he learned to take Turkeys out while hunting them. Making sure to shoot the farthest one, first. The closest one, being the last one taken out. That is amazing to me, because I just know my thinking process would be completely reverse!

Just a quick heads up: The Last Stand reaction is missing from the Sabaton Music Reaction playlist.
Personally, I have always felt that the Army's Audie Murphy Club should be the Alvin York Club. SGT York actually earned his MOH as an NCO, whereas Murphy was promoted to LT by the time he earned his MOH.

A good thing you could have mentioned in the same breath is that the 82nd was not a Air troop during the Great War because aircraft technology saw its birth in the Great War and saw refinement in the Inter war period and was built upon during the progression of the Second World War.
Just something many don't know about aviation technology and even fewer people take that into account.

There's nice coverage in Sabaton History, as there is comment section floodrd already. I listened to book of Alvin, I believe it was called something like Sgt York and his people. There he talked about that pistol shooting. He said he decided to start from last man charging at him. That way others wouldn't see their comrades fall, and wouldn't panic and shoot him.
Ps. Try Talvisota or Soldier of three Armies or White Death (have to add this, since Im from Finland 😁)
