I like the colors motif, and since we have Kanto where all towns are named after colors, we could as well have a game where every gym has a different color theme.
Relay Gym: EVERY. SINGLE. TRAINER. Resets any time you walk out. Including the leader, even, so you can basically redo and reset the whole entire gym infinitely! And, you gotta beat everyone in ONE go! No ability to go Pokèmon Center or swap team members between fights! Expect a TON of Baton Pass abuse.
Years ago I'd had thoughts for Gyms that were only partly Type themed, but were more used to teach the player about various gameplay mechanics: 1. Normal - basic team building, type matchups, and held items 2. Ghost/Dark - type immunities (Ghost typing, Dark secondary typing, Levitate), and priority moves 3. Poison/Fire - non-volatile statuses (Poison and Burn, Flame Body and Poison Point, Toxic and Will o' Wisp) 4. Grass/Fairy - status moves (attract/infatuation, Rivalry, stat boosting, barrier/light screen etc.) This gym leader is also in charge of the nursery, and will teach trainers the basics on EV and IV training outside of battle. Or, their spouse does it. 5. Rock/Ground - entry hazards (Spikes and Stealth Rocks, Magic Bounce, Levitate) 6. Psychic - volatile statuses (confusion, infatuation, Taunt, Mean Look) 7. Two trainers mixing Flying, Water & Electric - double battle strategies (rain dance, hurricane, thunder, lightning rod, tailwind...) 8. Multi-type - weather effects, team variety, general challenge.
My idea has always been gyms based on breeding groups. That way the different themes can have a theme of their own but they won't be all single type gyms that can be beaten with a bunch of super effective pokemon.
i have thought about the idea of a Rotation battle gym having to maneuvre around 3 pokemon when you dont know what they will use, it feels like a fun challenge on paper or maybe a "luck" gym, something like a casino, pokemon often assiciated with luck (or bad luck), and having luck, generally working against you, low rolls on damage, the enemy criting being more often, as well as added effects from move like a 10% of paralize... having more of a 25%
Blasts from the past Gym Leader: Oh? You're approaching me? You think just because you've mastered this region's power-up gimmick, that means you can take me? Even though I have mastered items, Mega Evolution, Z-moves, Gigamantax, Alpha Pokemon and Crystalized forms? Ho ho! Then come as close as you'd like!
We need elite 4 members and a champion please this idea has to go somewhere here are a couple ideas How about one with only dual types like Mawile houndoom vileplume Azumarill altaria golem Or maybe one who only uses pokemon that don't evolve via level up Togekiss (shiny stone) Machamp (trade) heilolisk (sun stone) ludicolo (water stone) magmorter (trade) dusknoir (trade) Though we could do one who only uses pokemon that can inflict status conditions Chandelure (burn) cincinno (infatuation) Gengar (sleep) Alakazam (confusion) magnezone (paralyze) stunky (poison) That's all I got
There's so many options it would be a great change up if they done this. Spooky gym, Multi regional (double battle) gym, Mirror gym (mirrors your team to the stat), Starter gym (the first gym of the game that uses the three new starters)
Earth gym. It can focus on Rock,Ground,Steel and then all their combinations. The Ace Pokémon could be a new fire/ground type based on lava where it’s ability causes water attacks to not be super effective but slows the Pokémon down.
How about a Casino themed Gym? Your team of six pokemon and the other six pokemon of the leader get put in this giant Roulette, some busted pokemon in (like a Scizor or a Metagross) and a few duds (like a Schuckle or a Magikarp) and after the pokemon are all assigned, you gotta make the best with the pokemon and moves you got to defeat the gym
Maybe it's because I got too used to the monotype theme, but I think Sinnoh did a very good job by including some Pokémon of different types but not completely unrelated: Volkner has Pelipper for Drizzle and 100% accurate Thunders, Candice has Medicham which can be found on Route 217... The best hypothetical example I can think of is definitely the Fighting type where you can slap in the likes of Lopunny, Tsareena or Cinderace and some newbie players would probably mistake them for actual Fighting types anyway lmao
I played a pokemon game called glazed version, and the entire elite four had colored teams, and the first one was pink. Also I think the best first gym should be a school, teaching the player about several staples like a gym teacher with Stat boost moves, a science teacher with status moves, and the gym leader is the principal with different types of evolution like stone, trade and friendship
I would love if they had each gym leader have a different gimmick that could be added to multiplayer. For example you are put in an area with couple Pokemon that are not anywhere else in the game, you get 10 pokeballs, and once you use them you battle the gym leader using those Pokemon. If you win, you get to keep 1 or 2 of them. These Pokemon would be from previous gen, so that new pokemon would not be locked behind this event. For gym 2 you could do double battle and for gym 3 triple battle.
Use a former generations rival as a final gym leader or elite 4 member. I know they sort of did this in black and white 2, as well as gen 2. But I liked it then and would love to see it come back. Imagine just walking into a gym being lead by Wally or N or even the horror that is Hop being back in the games.
I don’t know the team lineups exactly, but I think a “monster” themed Pokémon gym or a “magic” theme would be cool. “Monsters” theme could have a gym leader emulating Dracula, maybe. Gym looks like an old castle And “Magic” is this large tower with platforms that rise to different levels instead of stairs. An Alakazam and a Chimecho could be part of the gym leader’s team?
Perhaps one last typed gym, just to communicate a point... Very first gym: Dragon gym. Resists all 3 starter Pokèmon. Also there is NO way to get any Ice or Fairy types before defeating this gym. Just to hammer home hard "We are not just going to let you Rock Paper Scissors your way through this".
I'm guessing the reason themed gyms aren't a good idea is because Pokemon has always been structured for you to be able to catch Pokemon nearby that can help you to beat the gym. Even the Striaton City gym with 3 different elements allows you to obtain a Panpour/Pansage/Pansear to counter their counter. Once a gym no longer uses the old typing method, it's going to be very, very difficult to balance. Not impossible to pull off, like Blue in the Kanto remake, but he appeared as the LAST gym, where at that point you should have caught a wide variety of Pokemon already.
Thats some nice ideas for new concepts for gyms. What about folklore gym where they use pokemons with deep history to them? Xatu with his fear of the future. Phantump the deceased lost child in the woods. Bronzor the antique mirror. Absol the bringer of disasters. So on and so forth.
I mean these are kind of unique there would be maybe a baking gym or something like that and you would deal with like a mix of grass fire normal and fairy and it's kind of feels like a Battle frontier sort of way and I like that
Unless I'm mistaken, Pokemon XD had gym leaders based of certain moves. I know there was one based on, of all things, double team, but I don't remember what else there was.
How about expanding on the Pink Concept? Color-coded Gyms Pokémon Glazed did this with one of its Elite Fours (the game features more than one region) and used a joke that I still remember. The Pokédex doesn't accept that orange is a color. You cannot search for orange in the Color Search.
Status efecte gym leader: team has all type of moves inflocting status efect or haveing efecte when that statuse efect is afected on him or enemy like guts pokemon useing facade or useing on poisoned pokemon venonschok or sleep with dream eater
What I would love for GF to do is still keep gym typings but use those for like STAB. You could have a Gym Leader use majority of that type but their other Pokémon will be Pokémon that can learn that type's move as coverage. Put simply, take Candice & Volkner's D/P teams and apply that as a concept going forward
What ELSE could a gym use for a theme? Comment below!
Evolutions. A gym leader with different types of pokemon with different types of Evolutions.
Egg groups. Pokemon gym leaders based off egg groups. They wouldnt be confined to a certain type.
Honey trees from sinnoh
I like the colors motif, and since we have Kanto where all towns are named after colors, we could as well have a game where every gym has a different color theme.
Safari Gym! Can't take your own team in, gotta catch six temporaries to use! (Most diverse selection of mons available on the whole game of course.)
I love this idea

Pokèmon Center Gym, tons of heal moves and Nurse Joy is the gym leader.

The Gimmick Museum: The Gym Leader Megaevolves, Gigantamaxes, uses Z-Moves, and whatever more gimmicks can be forced in!
They could use pokemon that have multiple options for gimmicks like the Kanto starters
