I'm surprised you didn't show the way the tape measure was actually designed to measure between two surfaces. You push the end against one surface, stretch the tape out, and place the body of the tape measure against the other surface. The body of the tape measure has its width marked on it. Mine is 3". So you just read the number at the exit of the tape measure's body and add the 3" to it (or whatever is specified on the body of your tape measure.
You are correct that the case can be used - but I seldom find it as accurate when a double measurement is more accurate.
