  • Last week we explored the lesser known areas of Santorini, found some hidden gems as well as fantastic views: • Santorini Hidden Gems....
This week we explored the more well known areas of Santorini. Likely when you picture this incredible island you think of white washed buildings perched on cliff sides and blue domes. These sites can be found in the main town of Thira, the neighbouring town of Imerovigli and the very famous and most western town of Oia.
We started by exploring Thira (pronounced Fira). This is also where cruise ships dock so you’ll find quite a few people around. Because it was so full of people we didn’t stay long but moved on to Imerovigli. Here you’ll find just as beautiful views but much fewer people!
The next day we headed into Oia where we spent the afternoon at one of the most beautiful hotels on the island Canaves Oia (canaves.com/). Here we had lunch and got to spend some time in their gorgeous pool. Later we made our way out into the town to catch the sunset. We actually found the streets to be packed with too many people so we headed back to our quiet hotel where no one else was around (except a cat) to catch the amazing sunset.

Oia: Oia is a small town located in the north of Santorini. It is also known as 'Apano Meria' or 'Anomeria' and the inhabitants are called 'Apanomerites'. The village is approximately 150 meters above sea level. Oia was severely damaged in the 1956 earthquake and much work has been involved to implement its restoration.
What Oia is, is a very photogenic town, a maze of small shops, restaurants and cafes, almost all with spectacular views of the rest of the island and the caldera, and the remnants of a counter-culture community from back in the day when Oia actually was a quiet village.
Thira: The capital of Santorini is called Thira or sometimes called Fira. It is located in the west of the island, located on top of a cliff looking at a volcano. Santorini is the result of a incredible explosion that happened over 3500 years ago. The island has been constantly shaken by earthquakes, the last one happened this century. Thira is located around 10 kilometres from the port of Santorini (Athinios).
There are plenty of museums and a lot of places to take the perfect Instagram picture, just remember that you will find it hard to find a place without a crowd.
    Santorini:
Santorini is an island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens, 150 km south of Mykonos, and 140 km north of Crete. Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens.
The towns of Fira, Oia, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Akrotiri cling to the 300m cliffs and have magical views of the caldera and volcano to the west. The beach towns of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Agios Georgios are on the east and south sides of the island (not the caldera). For most travelers, the best place to stay in Santorini is along the caldera.

As a Canadian, it never ceases to amaze me how amazing tomatoes taste in Greece. One can live eating tomato salad every day of their trip. Greece is so simple and basic, that it actually transformed my perspective of how life should be lived. Great video! You brought back so many wonderful memories of my journey through Greece.

Thanks for the video. Great to learn about the differences between Fira, Imerovigli and Oia. Also interesting to hear how staged those 'perfect' Santorini pictures are!

well said guys. Travel is about the experience and the authenticity; not something to "check" off your list, so to speak. Get off the beaten path, see the real parts of the country and the people; I applaud you guys for always doing that; it's why you are my favorites!!
