    It looks like Rad recommends something different for charging the battery: radpowerbikes.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360044484033-Battery-Charging-Guide

    Last weekend I was answering questions at a coffee shop for a couple of ladies who noticed my bike outside and were curious about it. Every time I ride to the farmers market, someone asks me about, especially seniors seeking easier mobility.

    I've heard the opposite advice to yours for charging - "BOOB" for (plug in) battery, outlet, (unplug) outlet, battery, because (at least for this ebike manufacturer) the charger is meant to start with a constant current, then switches to constant voltage as the battery reaches full charge; if there's no battery attached, the charger will already be in constant voltage mode, and the charge dumped when it's connected could trip the fuse. Maybe that's a deficiency with this particular charger design - but just wanted to point out that the manufacturer's recommendation may vary.

      Good to hear, thanks for adding it. I'll email a few folks to see their recommendations!
      I've been taught outlet first in case there is a charge or charger is overloaded it doesn't go to the battery.

      You are correct. Plug into battery first and then plug into wall to avoid sparking.

    if you take your battery with your inside and the bike is outside in the rain do you need to put the plug in the batterij holder? or can it have some drups in it?

      If it’s wet outside, yes I would put a cover over the connection. Shimano & Bosch both make connector covers.

    A question about the type of e-bike when I go to the grocery store I come home with 12/16 pack 16 oz of drinks two of them and that's a lot to drink but most of the rest is just meat cuz I'm carnivore and and my drinks my wall in my guide so what type of ebike would handle that load?

    Do ebike batteries automatically cut charging at a life optimising level? Like how laptops and some modern phones will automatically only charge to 80% capacity to prolong the lifecycle? If they don't would doing it manually make much of a difference for the lifetime of the battery?

    • @BikeShopGirl
      @BikeShopGirl Рік тому

      It depends if they have battery management built in. Not all do so it’s hard to make a blanket statement. I can say Bosch is the only one I leave plugged in on my bench and go to lunch.

    I had forgotten about the recommendation to store the battery for a week or so at 30-60%. This is pretty... annoying. I commute about 18 miles roundtrip to work on most days. When I get home, the battery is pretty run down, usually less than 30%. I'm in the habit of just charging it fully overnight, so it's fully charged and ready to go the next morning. If I don't plan on riding the bike for a week or more after charging up the battery, is there another way to drain it down to 30-60% besides going for a long-ish ride?

      I've seen in many places that the recommendation is not to charge your bike overnight, assuming you are sleeping overnight. You want to be awake so you can attend to the battery if it starts making sounds or otherwise serns to be in distress. And once the battery is fully charged, after a few hours at most, you want to unplug it, in case the override fails for some reason. I usually plug in my battery soon after I get home, and then unplug it after dinner and dish washing. Good luck, be safe!

    • @BikeShopGirl

      www.ul.com/services/e-bikes-certification-testing-ul-2849
      It means the whole system is UL tested, including handling bad weather. I have found if they aren’t UL-2849 the controllers or sensors can go bad if they get too wet.

    Not happy with Bosch and their fight against Right To Repair. BTW, you do not put more torque on a chain with a mid-drive or hub. A really powerful one will only be 100nm's of torque. We apply more than a hundred nm's with just one arm every day in the shop. A human leg is more than double and is applied much less smoothly than a mid-drive.
    You will get more wear because your chain moves faster than you pedal, you will tend to go further, faster and probably attack more hills.
    Kinda wish you had addressed inflation more strongly. Most of my customers don't understand that you can't just use your thumb on a modern bike and seem astounded when I tell them they need to check at least weekly (they'd never listen if I told them it really ought to be daily).

    • @BikeShopGirl
      @BikeShopGirl Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment! So when you are being told that a motor provides 300% assistance with 65Nm of torque, what does that apply to?
      There’s a whole video all about inflation and also covered in the video about bike maintenance basics 🙌

    • @MHH3180
      @MHH3180 Рік тому

      @@BikeShopGirl thanks, I'll include the video in the shops blog soon. Actually, it is assisting up to 300% or 65nm's. The chain moves 3x as fast, up to 65nm's. You can out press the motor for an entire ride, but it is a lot harder to do with a higher torque motor. A buddy once described it as infuriating. Like the motor was angry and quit helping just to spite him. This guy has legs like tree stumps and giant calves, he once hauled 300#'s of firewood 25 miles, on his non-assist Big Dummy, so the bike club could have a campfire in the middle of nowhere, along The Hennepin Canal. Anyway, try it some time. It's a weird feeling to overpower your motor.
