  • On April 5th, 2021, a strong, active, perfectly healthy young woman named Tamra was working out at her gym, when she suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Tamra's heart had suddenly stopped beating, and was in a deadly inneficient rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation or V-fib. If not treated quickly and effectively with early CPR and defibrillation, in conjuntion with anti-arrythmic medication, V-fib is fatal 100% of the time.
Emphasis on *if*. Lucky for Tamra, she was working out near two bystanders who were both trained in CPR, and sprung into action; one doing chest compressions while another activated the 911 system. When #ATCEMSMedics arrived at her side, Tamra was still in this lethal arrythmia.
Lucky turned in to luckier, when the EMTs, Paramedics, and Physician that arrived at her side had all the training, knowledge and advanced skills needed to successfully resuscitate her. She required multiple defibrillations (including Double Sequential External Defibrillation), numerous medications, and even a surgical airway, in order to restore her circulation and give her a even the slightest chance to survive.
Boy oh boy did she survive! Her journey wasn't easy, but today, she is vibrant, thriving, healthy, and even working out again!
Tamra reached out about a month ago, wanting to meet the folks she calls her heroes: the #ATCEMSMedics that saved her life. So yesterday, exactly one year to the day of her event, she got to meet District Commander J. Todd, Medic M. Leibin, EMS Fellow Dr. J. Ausman, and Josh, one of the bystanders that performed CPR on her immediately until help arrived. Without each and every one of them, this story may not have had a happy ending.
Tamra, thanks for sharing your story, and we're so glad we could make this happy reunion happen! They don't come along very often, but when they do, it reminds us why we do what we do.
