- I bought a 1978 V8 Nova for $1000. It's been abandoned for 25 years. It runs rough. Can I get it running right? Has the engine suffered a catastrophic failure? What should I do with it? Make a Hot Rod? Is it a 305 or 350?

Hi lee that car is very solid floor pans and all i learn alot in this video thank you for sharing
Thanks
Bro Lee, bring her back to life...I know the money might not be there, but I like the product!
Hey Lee, your videos are the best 👍 keep up the good work…
Thanks
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels!!!
You are inspiring!
Thanks
Had this same issue a few times with Mopar Small blocks at high rpms.
The lifters collapsed causing the pushrods to fall out of alignment and being smashed by the rocker arms.
If you’re going to keep the motor, install a new set of lifters and push rods. If you’re going to sell it, just replace the bent ones.
I worked on many engines, and I ain’t never saw anything like that!!!! Unreal!!!!!
I bought a Cutlass and found the same problem I got a new push rod and it ran fine, don't know way this happens it may be from getting on it to much but new rod worked for me.
Hey Lee, I had a car that did that exact thing. Sometimes, it would have drive and no reverse and sometimes nothing at all. If it sit awhile it would have drive again. The transmission filter was filthy and clogged. I did a fluid and filter change to the transmission and it resolved the issue. It was a 72 pontiac ventura with the 307 and turbo 350 trans. Not sure if it's your problem but wanted throw it out there. 😊
I think probably what happened was, it is a wore out tired motor. And they were drag racing and redlined it. At 75 PSI be in your strongest. That motor needs rebuilding foreshore. It'd be nice to know if it had double hump heads or four bolt main. It'd be worth rebuilding. Otherwise it'll be cheaper just to swap it out with another small block. That's a shame to drive train is dead. I love that color and it's a cabriolet. Can't wait to see what you do with it I love that body style. God bless
I love how the Malibu turned out, sort of a cult favorite Arts Malibu is on your channel..
Glad it was fixed up, a few times I was I don't know ,I just don't know when you cut it up, but it turned out great!
I watched your channel from after the first few videos of yours years ago..I had to change my youtube name/start a new account 3 times..Cant wait for the next one!
tap the top of those three valves and see if they feel solid when you hit it or if its springy lol .gd luck it's still a savable motor.youll get it.
Even with the rockers off...valves are closed. No compression you've got blown headgaskets from overheating. Or cracked heads. Looked like u had oil in your antifreeze. I'd be pulling the heads off without a doubt. Maybe you've got a used set. Dime a dozen. Or pull it out. 010 is a common 350 number. It be worth repairs if you wanted. But pull the heads. I promise it's gaskets or valve issues. She hot real hot and overrevved.good luck!!👍
Cam,lifters timing chain and a few push rods and get that girl back to running! Fixer Up! Possibly Filter and Modulator on the transmission you would be surprised what changing them can do. Just a suggestion! Great Videos Lee Keep them coming! I watch all the time just don't comment. My dad was a paint and body man at almost 70 he still works at the Autobody Supply Store.
If you paint it like the similar stripe thing, it would be much cooler than stock.
Over revving when cold
That's what I have an 1978 2 door Nova mines got a fresh 327 has an r4700 in it but in swapping it out for a turbo 350
Cam / Lifters, worth saving.
I would fix it up for my own collection
You can get everything for the base Novas for sure. Just make the interior black because usually that’s the only option. Yeah it cost a fortune Good vid Lee👍💯🔥
Well worth 1800.00 in parts alone. But I'm not about scrapping unless structurally unsafe.
Good videos ❤
No title makes it worth scrap price in my world. You gotta jump through so many hoops in my state it isn’t worth the hassle plus for that money. You can find 1 with a title. Even as a race car. Most events want tag and insurance even in illegal street racing.
Edit, I had a friend that use gamble on cars without a title. More times than not. It was stolen or there was money owed at a bank or finance company. He would have to pay off what was owed to get the title released. He never made any money. If he made money on 1 he would lose it all and more on the next. No title, no thank you. It’s too many unknowns unless you get the VIN ran before you buy it then you still got the state to get through. It has to be dirt ass cheap or you need it for parts.
Lee it has the same window under that fiber glass cap . I fixed a Buick Skylark just like it with the Landow top .Pull it off and you will see
Love the old Nova, please save it.😊
I would throw some push rods in it, get it running decent and sell it. Get more out of it running. It’s worth fixing up
That's the plan
You had to go this far with it, you might as well go all the way with and get more money for it, It will never be a 50k 72 Chevelle but it could be a 15-20k everyday driver/weekend Muscle car for someone. IF it were mine I'd fix what needs fixing, clean up the vinyl top if it can be saved and then sand the body down and throw a cheap but decent Silver or Pewter paint job on it, becuase the silver colors are popular now, probally use the Ready to spray Duplicolor paint job on it. and then put it up for sale. I've never liked the stock rallye wheels but if your just going to sale it I say rock them and let the new owner decide if they want to keep them or not.
Enjoyed the video Lee not sure if its worth it
the cost and your labor.
Check the timing to..305s came with soft metal cams front the factory also..cam and lifters set pretty reasonable on amazon..
That explains your miss. Pull the valve covers and check your valve to see if they're stuck open
Its a pretty clean motor on the inside..not slugged up
It's been rebuilt or apart before
@@clunkersandclassics Pull it (motor) Cam/lifters/timing chain & gear if needed and save for a better project car...Part out the car...
That was real smart
Hotrod jesus robs peter to pay paul. The garage floor provides.
Had novas all my youth they are easy to work on.3 push rods is easy or id pull the damn thing out and work on it.pop the heads. the305 350 sbc gasket set is dirt cheap.
Agree no vinyl
I would try just putting three push rods in adjust all the racker arms first it was probably stuck valves from the car sitting so long and somebody just cranked on it and just bent the pushrods. The heads are basically almost off after you take the intake off these exes already off, shouldn’t be too hard, but I would try to push
I would guess valve float. But it's just a guess
Someone may have put the wrong size pushrods in it but the biggest problem is clear. The car isn't worth rebuilding both engine and trans. The car might be good for some people w. the ls bug or ideas about going to the drag track. If you was gonna rebuild the engine it might be worth doing to sell or drop into something later.
What happened was somebody took that engine to far in rpm and it bent some push Rods, check them all. Replace the pushrods and stick it back together.. it should be good
If you have SBC available, be worth it painting it with new black
Lee, that engine most likely was over reved. That’ll cause pushrods to leave their channels. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find a bent valve or two as well if you pull the heads off. Either way she’s toast for now. I know whatever you decide will be great content I’m sure. Looking forward to watching what you decide.
I think the push rods were bent because the were adjusted improperly.......in the wrong order.
Hi Lee I'm wondering if the car sat awhile and had some stuck valves and someone threw gas and battery fired it up reved it and bent push rods Derek on vice grip aways says hand turn the engine first to avoid this just a thought. An idea if you want to save the car pull the engine out of that chevy van it's really not worth anything anyway lol but neither is that nova .thanks again Lee for the video keep it up
With that motor half wore out, so are the lifters( there weak) and it was over revved and the lifters started floating causing the pushrods to fall out and get jammed and bend. New lifters and pushrods you'll be good.
350 worth more then whole car god video Lee
Rebuild the distributor just a pickup coil and a control module if cap an rotor good
i have a red one of these, i know you already did one but id like to see you fix it.
Why don't you move a few pushrods from the good cylinders to test the lifters and valves?
Check if you got a stuck valve or a bit push ride or loose rocker
Maybe stuck valves could cause the pushrods to bend, worth fixing, if its a 350 and you can source a trans, why not at least get it running and flip it on a bill of sale.
That's the plan
I had that happen before and bent the push Roda just a idea
Blowing the rockers off like that is probably over revving.. and the dead cylinders can be bad rings or more likely blown head gasket.. the pressure you feel is probably crankcase blow by
This sounds like my Ram. Was a broken valve spring
Now that I know you got three bent pushrods timing chain has jumped
The shaking may be caused by a bad torque converter, you can unbolt it from the flexplate and hook it back with a bungee cord, start the engine and see how it idles.
But you may get there just after I hit send …😂
Time to do compression test.maybe be new chain they use to cost 20 bucks. any thing sbc is cheap.305 is plenty out there.
Possibly the timing chain
lone wolf 2000 lee that's your remote starter lol
Whoever change the intake manifold put long intake bolts and then tighten them too far down bending the pushrods, it's supposed to have 1" intake manifold bolts
Put the v8 motor in the Siver car ❤❤❤❤
if you use 10-20-50s makes big different plus something eat or beer many a car for case beer even couple for pop
Valves are probably stuck. Which caused push rods to bend.
Looks like the rocker studs are pulled up to me
Those taillights look to be identical to a 78 Malibu
Dig into rear frame railings and front subframe mounts.
This will tell you if "BlueBella" is worth your time and love.
They're good. Texas cars don't get rot there. No salt or snow here.
Yank the heads off get a set of pushrods if the heads are cracked.do you still have the Box chevy truck you took the bed off from didnt that have a small block in it if its a 350 theres your heads pushrods and rockers if you just wanna slap it together.I think someone reved the piss out of that poor thing floated the valves and and turned the pushrods into boomerangs.
Fix the nova that will be a kool car ❤❤❤❤❤
If nobody wants it maybe you can swap the gray van engine/trans into it or another 305 or 350 you have around ?
I have a plan B. Stay tuned.
Ford transmission fluid A Chevrolet transmission I've always used whatever I could find Never hurt anything
Ford transmission fluid in a chevy Doesn't hurt anything
Trans fluid is around 27$ per gal. Up here.
Throw some push rods in it and give it a chance, being a 350 it would be worth it,at least you know why is was miss firing.
Yes Iwil
Car sat. Ran with no lubricant? Marvel or any lube plug holes prior to starting?
Work on 1978 Omega
The back window set up looks like a Apollo.
NOVA=Nova Omega Ventura Apollo
Looks like the timing chain ( Teflon ) may have jumped. My pushrods on #1 and # 8 were snapped in two… your engine kinda runs, my ‘73 350 wouldnt even spin til I took off the timing chain cover and replaced the sprocket and chain …😡😡 oh yeah… I had to take the intake off… smdh
Timing chain timing chain… at least check it
Could be a vacuum leak, the modulator isn't connected on the trans.
I say get 3 push rods from summit and see where it goes.
Autozone has them $2.99 each
Maybe Bubba put in the wrong hardware as in wrong push rods and/or lifters just to make it run for a little while and parked it when they gave up??
Thats like a vacuum leak . Maybe why it’s running rough
Great video , I have a 79 Chevy Elco with a 305 , it shakes a bit at idel, it runs great and strong with no leaks,, and guess what the problem is ? Crank wobble ,, I was hoping it was only the harmonic balancer , but I grabbed it and pulled it back and forth just a little bit, , so grab your crank pulley and shake it , looking forward to more videos
Lee it sounds like you may have wore out lobes on the cam or it could be two or three other things
Maybe the cam is messed up
I'd hammer on the valves to make sure they aren't stuck. It could be causing the compression the issue as well.
Possibly stuck valves
Is the bent push rod longer? Could have replaced with wrong ones.
no, same size
I’m a nova guy and I even had a blue ‘75 with a 350 when I was a teenager. As much as I would like to see you rebuild this one….in my opinion it’s too far gone
Love your channel but that 150hp old v8 is not a hotrod lol
You can't put Ford transmission fluid in a Chevrolet it will not respond and go in gear you can probably try flushing the transmission out I would go back with universal transmission fluid cuz it goes virtually in anything
I ran old type F ford fluid in my th350’s all the time. It was an old school trick to use the ford fluid, as it would swell the seals in an old trans and keep it going a while longer.
O.n second thought, sell 😢!
Tap on the valve with a hammer and you can hear if the valve is stuck if it is lube it up get a brass hammer and tap on the valve loose up and down that’s why they push rodent valves
that the thing we all want is it a need how bad right so guess he could trade beg borrow your not charity
Somebody was hard on that motor. Sale it motor, car and all. Be done with it.
bad gas glued the valves
Bent push rod = piston contact with valve .Over rev ? Sticky valve ? Bad luck ? Back yard motor repair you get by with murder on stock motors and you can start them out of the car first to make sure everything is O.K .
Lee, i'd say strip that 78 nova for parts....not worth it
You don't have a magnet
I think he calls it a looser switch
loser switch
It's a remote starter switch
@@clunkersandclassics spelling was never my thing
Foamy water, no compression, blown head gasket.
Get it running and driving then sell it
Scrap it lee. There's so much wrong with it.
Orally's sales push rod by the each
That's a 4 bolt main 350
Autozone $2.99 each
I only see that square plug right by the front numbers on the 4 bolt mains
Press in rocker arm studs can back out from heat, pressure, and age. Check them, weak lifters, and running it low on oil will fail to keep all the lifters pumped up. The weakest lifter springs went first. Replace with good used parts, adjust valve lash and roll with it.
