Robert. I sent you an email with a photo of that wood you found that was different than the decorative cutouts from the outside of the house. It might be part of the stairs inside the house. I sent photos to show you.
That old pitch fork head is 19th Century. We have one, with it's original handle that belonged to my husband's great grandfather. I love it, so much better balanced than modern pitch forks. You cannot find modern made three tine pitch forks -- I looked high and low because I did not want to keep using the old one and putting stress on that old wood handle. The colored glass you found is called slag glass and was also used to make shades for lamps, could have been part of the lamp you found the base for (yes, it is a lamp base, my best friend's parents used to own an antique lighting fixture business. It is the base of a floor lamp.)
When are we going to see the inside?? Don't wait too long I'm 78 and the sand is running out of my hour glass pretty fast.
That was so funny!
Yeah I had a laugh at that comment too 😊👍
Tip for finding your tools: take your brooms, shovels, rakes, hoes, axes, crowbars and anything else that you don't want to lose, take some masking tape and tape off some stripes around the handles then spray the stripes with neon orange, green or yellow paint, let dry and remove the tape. The bright stripes not only make you tools easier to find when you've laid them down and forgotten where, they also make it easy identify what tools are yours if someone borrows them and forgets to bring them back. I got tired of laying my tools down and then wasting a bunch of time having to look for them, even worse if I didn't see them laying on the ground and ran over them with the tractor, truck or mower..! Saves a lot of time and aggravation! Try it, you'll like it! ( I usually paint just two or three stripes around the bottom and top of the handles, just enough t make them show up when you don't put them away and just let them lay around.
I did something similar with my tools. I had a neighbor who would “borrow” things and never return them. I put the brightest pink paint I could find on every one of my yard and gardening tools. He never borrowed anything again. 😁
A tremendous amount of work. My hat's off to you!
@@sallyintucson I have done the very samething to my tools
Brilliant!
I love the stripey handle idea!
@@sallyintucson I have that same neighbor...dear, sweet NEVER returns.!!! PINK, too! Even Better!
I liked how you did the commercial for your sponsor. I like your honest style. I’m hooked and will continue watching through all the progress.
I like the music you used today! It matches your old farm.
Your friend is so funny with the big truck he brought over to help you collect the rubbish. You have some very nice friends and family and we love watching your adventures. How cool that you found some old shovel heads, and things. I am sure you can find some wooden round dowels to use for handles and use those tools again.
Oh those window panes!!! I couldn't stop smiling. In our old farmhouse in New Hampshire the frost on the wavy glass windows would make beautiful patterns when the sun hit it. Thank you for bringing us along on your journey.
The plow blade is for a walk behind cultivator. You know, one with the big wheel in the front. You can change out the implements from a blade, to a fork to be for tilling and small blades for making rows.
There's a special banter amoung friends that's unique to the South. I miss that. 😁
Great work and cool finds finds Robert! 👍 It's always a fun adventure.💜
When Daniel comes along its always fun. Big help to have that big dump bin handy. To bad about the glass it sure is gorgeous
If my wallet ever called me it would be to borrow money😝 Nice box of tools, Merry Christmas Robert 🎄🍺☃️
Phahaha
Merry Christmas
That was funny right there.1😀
My lost wallet would say feed me
We are in the shortest days of the year definitely sucks when you are trying to get stuff done outside keep up the progress Robert
To help you put an age on your house, the style of the front door is "Eastlake" and is characterized with simple machine carving (as opposed to hand-carving in Victorian woodwork), and was popular for a relatively short period of time, from the 1870s into the 1880s, falling out of style in the early 1890s already. The door and door casement may not be original to your house, meaning the house could still be older than the 1870s, but it could have been "updated" with some Eastlake features to "modernize" it in keeping up with the Jones. Best of luck in your restorations.
Great info, thank you
“I hope that wallet teaches you how to cut down trees” 😂 💀
Humor was on point, enjoyed this vlog! ❣️
Robert, we call that bush, Winter Honeysuckle. It is usually planted around old homesteads. They spread new babies a lot, so watch it. Sniff the blooms! It always blooms in Winter and has a heavenly fragrance❣️ Love your videos! Merry Christmas!
Honeysuckle reminds me of the dreaded wisteria. Vines and a lot of spreading. Merry Christmas to you
It's another Heritage plant that works in well in Southern and Gulf Coast landscapes. I have some in my garden outside Houston. It's a pretty contrast to Pyrocanthis bushes this time of year and the scent is divine!
@@Jaxster58 Oh, yes, but Winter Honeysuckle just grows as a bush. No vines like common Honeysuckle, thank goodness!
The cool sign is part of an old toy like a small pinball game, maybe 60s or 70s. Its called milk glass. Cool stuff.
You have become a VERY important part of this old lady's life. Thank you.
Bet that glass was pretty in its day MERRY Christmas
I know videos take time from your restoration but I sure do enjoy them.
If you build a storage area type shed. These treasures you are finding would
look great attached to an outside wall. Thank you for posting.
I enjoyed the musical accompaniment today. Merry Christmas!
Wow.. what an amazing journey so glad that I found your channel and can’t wait to see how the old house comes back to life 😀 love the old house
Robert! Stop this! I have stuff to do but instead I find another video from you and here I sit. 😁💕
Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you all. Stay safe . Love from Australia. Xx
A dump truck should help you out a lot. That's fantastic. Also glad to see you have a sponsor That glass is so pretty.. Keep Safe ❤ Keep Well ❤Merry Christmas🎄🎅
I had to laugh at the grapefruit juice can. My son and daughter-in-law live in Holly Hill, FL and I live on the border of Holly Hill and Daytona Beach. Go figure. Merry Christmas to all of you.
What great friends you have. Progress
Thank you for the update on the Byrd project ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you guys maybe doing next ! Please have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ! Doing well here in Kansas .
You are making headway Robert! It may seem overwhelming at times, but you will get her done!
Did those folks throw anything away? LoL 🤣😂!
Never realized that window glass was so wavy. Very cool. Merry Christmas to the whole Sidestep clan.
Hey Robert big fan here love your blogs love how you're making progress on the old farmhouse just wanted to stop in and tell you that you know the hat you are wearing is called a stormy kromer if I am not mistaken they are made in the upper peninsula in a town called iron mountain in the state of Michigan where I am from I just thought it was really bizarre that you are wearing one of those hats all the way down there in Georgia anyway keep up the good work I will keep watching stay safe my friend 👍
This is funny. I found a huge container of “rusty metal” and I’m saving it for later.. haha!! Like a huge surprise 😂
Warp it up and put it under the Christmas tree. From 1806 to 1806.
@@rileyhogan8248 haha!! That’s basically what I’m doing with the new GoPro I just ordered.. 😂
You may want to save some of the porch ceiling boards. That painted beaded board would look beautiful on kitchen cabinets or on a island
Hey brother .. maybe more useless "advice" .. --> the rusty stuff.
If you have access to a tank of sorts to hold liquid. Go to your feed store & buy bags of pelletized molasses or even powdered citric acid. Both work, but molasses is my favorite. Both can be mixed with water to make a rust removal liquid. Strength varies .. but for me, I mix it at 50/50 or 1:3 ratios. Others like 1:5. Either way, it does not harm the metal. If made of softer pot metal, pay attention to that part daily. You can use old wire to tie the pieces off for quick retrieval. Want to check on your parts ?? Pull it up.
Anyways .. .. the molasses on steel pieces removes all the oxides/rust. It does leave an easily removable black colored skin on the part. When you remove the item, rinse it with a blast of water .. it comes off immediately .. .. then coat it with oil, paint, primer .. whatever your intentions are. Bare metal or coated.
Those farm tools, are better metal than today's Chinese made versions. With new handles, they are more apt to last the next hundred years than these new ones will.
The citric acid works great too .. but being reactive, you have to buffer the parts after with a baking soda mixture to neutralize the acid left on the parts. Also watch closely any soft pot metal with this, too.
Both the molasses and citric are harmless to the environment. Although the rust oxide goo at the bottom will definitely be a little icky .. so to speak.
There are tons of forum posts regarding use of both products on rusty metals .. on the H.A.M.B. An automotive related hot rod & custom forum, dedicated to the old days. Google will likely take you straight to those posts if typing in "molasses rust removal" or "citric acid rust removal".
Take care, brother. Keep up the good work !!
We all need to pitch in and buy our friend Robert a tool belt. It may not work for crow bars, but it will for most things he will use to work on his old house😊
Looking back at previous episodes you have done a lot of work on the porch area slow and steady is the way
My Goodness, you are such a hard worker!.x
Robert you are living my dream! I don't think I could do it now, but I love watching. God Bless my friend!
That combat tin is part of a table top pinball game.
Christmas cactus blooms, too!
Great work Robert keep it up 👍
That is a great old dump truck !
Hi Robert...you are correct....that IS a lamp base...it would at one time have had a glass dome sitting in it....with a circle cut in it to allow the pole part to come through to hold the bulb(s) and lampshade. The one I had had both the glass dome on the bottom and a glass dish shaped lampshade.
Happy Holidays yall
Goodmorning everyone 🙋

Very warm days yesterday and today!
I feel like you need to get a leaf blower and blow the leaves around house. You will be able to see the ground better (snakes) and won't loose tools. Lol
I hope you have a wonderful blessed Christmas and a happy new year 🎉🎈🎂 robert and family 👍🤘🤙🤟✌️👋👍👊🤛🤜👌🇺🇲🗽

Hi Robert, it's Nana. Love the vlog, especially love the Eastlake style door and transom on your house. Just want to thank you for Side Step Adventures as well as Watch Yer Step during the past year. Please take care of yourself, and I wish you, your family and friends a very Merry Christmas.
Thanks Nana, Merry Christmas
Save that stained glass. Someone down there can make you a suncatcher with it. If I was close I'd love to make you something. I'm in Central Kentucky and have been making stained glass pieces
for several years now.
Mr. Robert, you’re the second person to say you’re the worst at forgetting where you laid your whatever for my hubby is older than you and since I’ve known him he’s never recalls where he’s laid his keys, wallets, now iphone,,Ballpoint pens, his brush or comb, etc! He’s always searching and then he’s asking me: “Babé, did you see where I’ve placed my ?. No! I’ve purchased a, key hanger next to our door it’s a, beautiful antique shaped Farmers bell to clang together with the long iron holder attached to the bell when glancing together as mothers’ used to call her crew in! This antique smaller than the real bell it has four hooks on the bottom hired triangle shape cast iron bell: each dangling 4”keys is to remind us place our separate keys on each key hook! I’ve bought this wonderful piece before I’d married to put in my hope chest young girls kept prior to marrying! We’d been married 55 yrs. 6months & 13 days! I’d hung this Magnificent original 1830 antique bell key holder! I’d used it our daughter and sons as they’d grown or in school had their house key chain then their car, house and locker key change and myself always used this key chain. My dear sweet hubby never used it. He’d always set his keys where he’d removed his pant! So, I’d ordered him this sorta humidor for men to put his wallet slot, key slot, change rings etc! I’d placed it on his cabinet in our master bedroom. He’d always removed his shoes socks clothes in his designated place on this cabinet with he’d housed his underwear socks etc. He’d never put his items in this leather case he’d placed many of these things on the cabin top around his box especially for these items! He’d put other things in this case not what it was used for! I’d given up as now, he’s still looking for these pocket goods into items! This tool box I’d purchased with everything he’d needed yet, eventually every tool went missing for this tool box is empty! Lost everything I’d purchased he’d never ever picks up after himself! So, dear sweet young man you’re not the worst! You’re maybe his son in another life! HÀ! HÀ! Happy someone seen where you’d placed it. Seem every time in watching your videos my beautiful grandson interrupts for he’s in need of my advice at times! Love you home can hardly wait to see your complete finishing home! Beautiful it shall be! Love you God Bless and please be careful! Do not get hurt! If in Doubt not throw it out but, set aside! Congratulations on the purchase of this home!
The Combat Bagatelle was a 1950s toy pinball game, cool find.
That’s too cool
Yup, Good call!
You can almost see the house now. Reminds me of my kitchen. I just spent 45 minutes getting to a crotch pot surrounded by so much stuff.
Ummm I don’t think I would eat anything cooked in a “crotch” pot, even if the kitchen was clean!
@@lindalumae I laughed so hard at your comment, no sound came out. Thank you so much for the laugh!
I hazard to guess. Better be wearing your crotchpot holders.
@@lindalumae How funny! I don't know if my computer changed my spelling or if I really spelled it that way. I didn't even notice.
@@davidcarroll1883 Either way, I got a good laugh. So thank you!
Paint your tool handles with florescent paint just a strip...
Y’all r so much fun to watch ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Nice truck too
I like how you think Robert. The bouncing around with your projects. I do the same thing. I have always got 3-4 projects going at one time, that way you don't get bored oe overwhelmed. It might take a little longer to get them done, but before you know it your done with one and your starting another. I wish you and your family & friends a Very Merry Christmas & a Very Blessed New Year 🔎🔨🎄💓🚙
"I live for old rusty things" should be embroidered on a pillow.
Enjoy the journey, It’s the fun part!
That wavy original window glass is awesome!
Enjoyed this video can’t wait for the next one take care
Love your old house videos from Alberta Canada 🍁 keep up the great work 🥰
I'd start with a load of metal for the scrap yard. Put a few dollars in that fancy wallet.
Those rusty bits would look great mounted ... old agricultural rusty bits are very cool. You could probably get a local crafts person who'd use solder to put the stained glass back together. I just got a Christmas present of old glass soldered together which was so nice. Loving the music choice 🎶🎶
Great finds and am sure Daniels truck will get used well the old game was something i had in the early 70s sad its not all there . Well agaian every time you do something we see more Great Video Thankyou
cant wait till you put this old lady back together be so good to live in this old house
I love your vlogs! Thank you so much.
enjoy watching to see how much gets done on the farm, .. thank you for sharing.. Have a Very Merry Christmas to you and your family...
With the music you have going , it reminds me of “Oh brother where art thou”. 😁
Very funny paid partnership 😁
Just a reminder, from the video where you told us what the inground tank was, someone said the pipe from behind the canning shed may be old feed pipe from the gaslight setup - and I think it might be, too; same as that piece of pipe you just found @9:33.
I do so much enjoy yur Vlogs... TY.. wishing you and all your 'family' a merry Christmas ...
Merry Christmas.
I'm getting attached to watching you work. Hard, hard work there
It's coming together nicely
Love Y'all Guys, Lots Of Love from Texas
I have that same lamp base. It’s for a tall floor lamp. The middle where the round part is there’s a marble disc there. And then the brass and steel tub sits in the middle and it held together by the hollow threaded rod in the middle where they chord goes.
😅😂 "Found another piece of an old saddle..." (It's bridle bit with chin strap.😉... but I bet you really already know that)
I should’ve said horse tack
curb chain
I want to get my husband one of those!!
LV to watch your vlog
I have a Tile tapped to the TV remote and one to the Roku remote. My husband kept losing them. You can leave one in the car to help you find where you parked it.
Enjoy your videos..look forward each day for the next one . MERRY CHRISTMAS
I always look forward to watching you! Merry Christmas!!
I love the truck
Awesome stained glass. Would be nice to find some like it to replace in the windows.
Oh good. I woke up early eww early and really needed this to start my day
I envy you with your magnificent house and I truly hope you get it restored back to its grandeur. I also envy your tenacity to commit yourself to the project. I myself, wouldn't have the resolve to take on such a project - I'm not sure that it's just my 64 years talking or if it would have been my position in an earlier time.
I have the mindset of Alfred Hitchcock when it comes to sponsors - but I know you have to eat, so...😆
I know... I turn down more sponsorships than I accept. Tried to make it as fun as possible.
@@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG - You're in a good position when you have to turn them away. Maybe you could go after bank sponsorship - a quick flash of a logo with "get money here" superimposed on it and you'd have the entire video canvas to present your stuff without interruption. 😁
It would sure make me a subscriber - I already am, but, you know, just supposing I wasn't...
@@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG Loved the sponsorship part. You made it funny.
I love the old pitchfork, give you a nickel for it. :) I watch your videos when I can. You sometimes use some wonderful music in your videos and todays music was really, really appealing to me. Can't keep your feet still with music like that. Would you mind sharing the name of the group and the song? I worked in construction and or mechanical fields all my life so I believe I can envision just what you have bitten off with this project. This is a major, major one. Good luck, stay safe and keep that wonderful attitude.
Merry Christmas y'all.

With the way you described the wallet tracker and how it works, you could be a salesman! 🙂
Maybe a used car salesman
Great video, Robert 😀
The dumpster on wheels is fantastic. So glad you were able to use it 🙂
That's a nice wooden box that held all that nice rusty stuff. You could use 1 like that in the back of the panel truck. 🙂

I love the music you've been selecting for the fast-forward!---And I'd love to see how that iron toe piece is supposed to look with the two halves put together...to make a clothing rack? Gotta see it to believe it!
Very glad you were able to obtain a dump truck. I found some of those Newspapers interesting as well-requesting for more unemployment-giving Financial Aid to other countries-38 years later and things have only gotten worse. Paint that crowbar bright orange-I don’t think you want to put an electronic gadget in it!
Doing a great job!!!!
