Carol's got a lovely pair of coconuts... :-D
Barmiest for 8! Just got it, the clock is still going.
As noted below, 358 is impossible. However, I thought one-away in this numbers puzzle was fairly easy. I'm surprised neither contestant tried for it.
100 / 25 = 4
75 - 4 = 71
71 x 5 = 355
355 + 1 + 1 = 357
By the same token, you can get a one-away from the other end like this:
75 + 1 = 76
100 / 25 = 4
76 - 4 = 72
72 x 5 = 360
360 - 1 = 359
You can also achieve the same result by a method where you multiply a couple of the four large numbers by each other, then divide by one of the small numbers on the board (here 5, because anything divided by 1 is itself, of course). It doesn't work for every number or every combination, but there are some times when nothing else will.
75 x 25 = 1875
1875 - 100 = 1775
1775 / 5 = 355
355 + 1 + 1 = 357
Ironically, if you made it a _four-large_ with the two 1's, 358 would be possible in the following manner:
50 + 1 = 51
100 + 75 = 175
175 / 25 = 7
51 x 7 = 357
357 + 1 = 358
That guy in dictionary corner is an insufferable bore, how sad for Richard that his last week was spent with him and his nerdy nonsense and ennui.
